MALERKOTLA
CABLE TV BANNED: The local police has banned cable TV in the town following its misuse by the cable operators. SHO Sukhdev Singh said the operators were openly violating the Copyright Act, 1957, and Cinematographic Act, 1952.

PATIALA
ELECTED: The following have been elected office-bearers of the managing committee of the Patiala Chapter of the Institute of Cost and Works Accountants of India: chairman — Mr S.C. Arora; vice-chairman — Mr T.S. Gujral; secretary — Mr V.K. Goel; and treasurer — Mr R.N. Garg.

COURSE COMPLETED: An in-service course for primary teachers of the Chandigarh region was conducted at Kendriya Vidyalaya No 1, Patiala Cantonment, from May 10 to 30. The course stressed the need to strengthen primary education as per the Kendriya Vidyalaya School guidelines.

POISONING: Two persons died due to poisoning in the city on Friday. Preena, a plus two student, died after she consumed Celphos tablets in her house on the Dhillon Marg. In another case, Ramesh Kumar, 42, died after consuming poison in the morning in the Civil Lines area.

SANGRUR
APPOINTED: Dr O.P. Singh Kande, president of the Punjab unit of the IMA has appointed Dr Surinder Singla, a TB and chest specialist as the chairman of the Inservice Doctors’ Wing of the Punjab unit of the IMA. Dr Singla has also been elected as the Honorary Secretary (Public Relations) of the Punjab unit of the IMA for 2000-2001.

CHANDIGARH

ROADS IN POOR STATE: Resident of Sector 46 government houses have assailed the authorities for the bad condition of roads in their area. According to Mr R.K. Chandoliya, President of the Government Houses Residents Welfare Association, repeated requests to the municipal authorities have failed to evoke any response. The problems pertain to uncovered manholes, uneven parks, wild vegetation and defective streetlights.

MEMORANDUM: A deputation of the Punjab Mandi Board Employees Union on Friday submitted a memorandum to the Punjab Chief Minister, highlighting the release of ex gratia. According to Mr Ajaib Singh, patron of the union, the CM assured them that the recommendations of the Finance Commissioner, Mr Y.S. Ratra, would be implemented as soon as possible.

FIRE: Goods worth several thousands were reportedly destroyed in a fire in Sector 35-C here on Friday morning. The fire broke out in the morning on the first floor of the SCO no. 473-74 in the sector. A short-circuit was said to be the cause of the fire. Three fire tenders were pressed into service to put out the blaze.

ADMIT CARDS: Panjab University has dispatched admit cards of entrance tests for admission to LLB, LLM, PGDCSA, MCA, MSc (Honours), Masters in Commerce, MMC, MA (education), B Lib, M Lib, B Ed and MA (physical education) courses for the forthcoming session. Students who do not receive their admit cards by June 3 should contact the new enquiry office of the university on June 5 along with an attested photograph.

HARYANA

AMBALA
SUFI SAINT: The annual urs of Sufi saint of the Naqshbandi tradition, Sain Tawakkal Shah will be held from June 5 to 7 at his Dargah at Sabzi Mandi, Ambala City, under the supervision of the Punjab Wakf Board. Pilgrims from Haryana, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh are expected to participate in the urs, a release said. On June 5, Quran Khwani (recitation of Holy Quran) will be held at Dargah Sharif. On June 6, langar will be distributed and on the last day, Qul Sharif will be organised in the Dargah Sharif.

HISAR
CONFERENCE: Prof M.P. Srivastava, Director Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation, CCS Haryana Agricultural University, has been taken on the presidential committee of the first Asian conference on plant pathology being organised by the China Society for Plant Pathlology. The conference will be held from August 25 to 28 at Beijing.

ACCIDENT: One person was killed and another injured in a head-on-collision between a truck and a Tata 407 near Siwani on Wednesday. The victim has been identified as Tekchand, driver of the Tata 407. The injured person has been admitted to a local private hospital.Top

KANGRA
ESTABLISHMENT DAY: DAV Establishment Day was observed at the local DAV College here on Thursday. Tributes were paid to the founder. Principal of the MCM DAV College, Mahatma Hans Raj, on the occasion. Mr Anil Soni, Editor of a Hindi daily was the chief guest. Mr S. K. Sharma, Principal, remembered those who established the DAV institution on June 1, 1886, 114 years ago. A cultural programme was also organised on the occasion.
