5 Punjab cops get life term
CALCUTTA, May 24 (UNI) — A district court today sentenced five Punjab policemen, including an IPS officer, to life imprisonment on charges of killing a Punjab couple at Tiljala near here seven years ago. Fourteenth Additional District and Sessions Judge of South 24 Parganas Sukumar Chakraborty also sentenced them to three years rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 6,000 each for “hushing up of evidence”. Both the sentences would run simultaneously.

Hooch claims 9 lives
CHENNAI, May 24 (UNI) — Nine persons, including two women, died and 17 others were hospitalised after they consumed illicit liquor at Padiampattu village in Thiruvannamalai district of Tamil Nadu. According to reports received at the police headquarters here, two died last night, while seven others succumbed today.
