Proposal for 6 more courses at GMCH

CHANDIGARH, May 15 — Six other departments of the Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32, have been found eligible for starting postgraduate courses following clarification of certain rules of the Medical Council of India. With this, a total of 11 departments have been recommended for starting these courses.

According to sources, the Inspection Committee has recommended that the Departments of General Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Pediatrics, ENT, Orthopaedics and Community Medicine should be considered for starting the courses. The Inspection Committee, constituted by Panjab University under the chairmanship of a former PGI Director, Dr B.K. Sharma, is yet to submit its report, it is learnt.

The committee had earlier recommended the Departments of General Surgery, Anaesthesia, Pathology, Ophthalmology and Anatomy for these postgraduate courses. The same were subsequently approved by the university Syndicate earlier this year and clearance is awaited from the Medical Council of India, which is yet to send a team before giving the final approval.

The sources further reveal that the Director-Principal of the GMCH has written to the Vice-Chancellor to conduct another inspection of certain other departments which were either left out earlier or not recommended. These include the Departments of Physiology, Dermatology, Forensic Medicine, Bio-Chemistry, Microbiology and Psychiatry.

Role of nurses highlighted

CHANDIGARH, May 15 — A day-long seminar was held today on “Nurse always there for you” as part of the Celebration of International Nurses Week.

Speakers highlighted the role played by a nurse in hospital, home, community, school and industry.

A competition on dressing techniques was held in GMCH-32. Ramit Paul bagged the first prize, Surekha Paul won the second, Roz Meri and Kuldeep Kaur won the third prize and consolation prize respectively. The competition was held to assess the knowledge of scientific techniques and patient-nurse interaction. Mrs V Pillai, Principal, Mata Sahib Kaur, Institute of Nursing, SAS Nagar and Mrs Kamla Gill, Principal Tutor, GH-Sector 16, were the judges.

Amit ensures LIC's victory

CHANDIGARH, May 15 — A superb performance by left-hander Amit Uniyal who scored an unbeaten 73 runs in 60 deliveries, besides getting four wickets for eight runs, helped Life Insurance Corporation of India XI beat Royal Cricket Academy by 34 runs in the second Samsung League Tournament at the Sector 12 grounds here today.

In another match, Hillions Cricket Club beat United XI by 19 runs.

Brief scores: LIC — 157 runs (Amit Uniyal 73 n.o., Prabhjot 72 n.o.); Royal CC — 123 all out (Amrit Pal 46, Amit 30, A. Uniyal 4 for eight, Umesh 2 for 24).

Hillions XI — 118 runs for nine in 20 overs (Arvind 28, Ashish 24, Prem 4 for 17, Surinder 4 for 20, Sunit 2 for 18); United XI — 99 all out in 18.4 overs (Daljeet 22, Ranjit 16, Ashish 3 for 18, N.S. Bhandari 3 for 16).

Snooker meet: The Saurabh Khattar Memorial Snooker (junior and senior) Tournament will be held at Chandigarh Club from May 17 to 21. Saurabh, a former UT snooker champion who represented Haryana in the national meet, had died in April 1999. Past year also, the tournament was conducted in June.

Slazer cricket: Sanjay Sharma's knock of 64 runs helped 3BRD XI defeat Haryana Warehousing Corporation in the second semi-final of the first Slazer Cup Cricket Tournament at the Sector 5 grounds in Panchkula today.

Brief scores: HWC — 146 runs for seven in 25 overs (T.P. Singh 72, Sandeep Sandhu 27, Rajesh K. Singh 3 for 16, S.K. Singh 2 for 29); 3 BRD — 147 for nine in 23.5 overs (Sanjay Sharma 64, Kanwar Kamboj 26 n.o., Rajesh Singh 23, Sandeep Sandhu 2 for 22, T.P. Singh 2 for 31).

Probables chosen: The District Panchkula Cricket Association has selected 24 probables for an off-season coaching camp which is to begin at the Sector 5 grounds from tomorrow.

The 15-day camp will be conducted by Surinder Singh, an HP Ranji player, and Harminder Bawa. Rajiv enters semis: Rajiv Bajaj in singles and A.C. Bali and Raj Kumar in doubles, moved into the semi-finals of the fifth Tribune Table Tennis Tournament at The Tribune Colony here today. Rajesh Malik and Lovkesh also entered the regular doubles semi-finals.
