India may give humanitarian
aid to Lanka
NEW DELHI, May 5 — The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Mr M. Karunanidhi, today gave a green signal to the Centre to take “any appropriate action” in Sri Lanka after his hour-long meeting with the Prime Minister, Mr Atal Behari Vajpayee, during which the two leaders discussed the prevailing politico-strategic situation in the island nation.

35 Indian Army men detained
NEW DELHI, May 5 — As many as 35 Indian Army personnel, including 8 officers of the UN Peacekeeping Force in Sierra Leone have been detained by the Revolutionary United Front (RUF) with the ground situation in the strife-torn country continuing to be “grim”, army sources said tonight.

SIT ‘hasn’t contacted’ Nishan
BEGOWAL, (Punjab) May 5 — Several prime witnesses in the case of death of the SGPC President, Bibi Jagir Kaur’s, daughter under mysterious circumstances on April 21, including the Bibi’s bodyguard Nishan Singh and several women who bathed the deceased’s body, today claimed that officials of the special investigation team (SIT) have so far not contacted them though they have been available here throughout.

In an incredulous move, the state government is supplying them opium with retrospective effect from June 1998 to date ignoring the fact that medically an addict who has survived for two years without opium is by now certainly rid of his addiction.
