Nikhil, Chetan lead in city chess

CHANDIGARH, April 15 — Nikhil Chopra in the under-12 section and Chetan Vikas in the under-14 section, were leading at the end of the opening day of the Chandigarh Chess Championship at the Sector 42 Sports Complex here today. The two-day meet is being organised by the Chandigarh Chess Association and the team thus selected will play in the Sub-Junior National Meet to be held at Ahmedabad next month.

The results at the end of the third round were as follows: Under-12 — Nikhil Chopra (3), Ravi Gupta (2), Anmol Razdan (2), Mohit Arora (2), Abhishek Kumar (2), Jaskaranjeet Singh (2); Shoorvir Singh (1), Karandeep Bhatti (1), Amit seth (0), Mohit Gupta (0).

Under 14 — Chetan Vikas (3), Preeti (2), Sheweta (2), Jatin Kaushal (1).

Superb knock: A superb knock of 79 runs in 70 deliveries by Jagjit Singh helped High Court XI beat City Cricket Club by a huge margin of 88 runs in the IVth UT League Tournament organised by the UT Cricket Association here at the PGI grounds today.

The CCC won the toss and elected to field first. High Court XI scored 161 runs for the loss of eight wickets in the allotted 25 overs. Jagjit Singh scored an unbeaten 79 runs and Sanjay made 29 runs. Vikas Soni contributed 23 runs to the total.

In reply, the CCC were bundled out for 73 runs. Jatinder and Rajinder were their main destroyers as they claimed four and three wickets, respectively.

In the matches of the day, Indo Dutch Cricket Club beat Pace Club by 12 runs, Sports Club, Panchkula, beat MSWS Cricket Club by 87 runs and Kalsi XI defeated Falcon Club by 72 runs.

Brief scores: High Court XI — 161 runs for eight wickets in 25 overs (Jagjit Singh 79 n.o., Sanjay 29, Vikas Soni 23, Sukhjinder 2 for 29, Pardeep Joshi 2 for 32); City Club — 73 runs all out (Sukhjinder 19, Rajinder Singh 3 for 23, Jatinder 4 for 15).

Second match: Indo-Dutch XI — 166 runs for four wickets in 25 overs (Vinod 52, Vishal 36 n.o., Jasminder 2 for 49); Pace XI — 154 runs all out (Sandeep 41, Vishal 22, Jasminder 20, Pawan 2 for 15, Vaneet Singh 2 for 28, Rajesh 2 for 31).

Third match: Sports Club — 167 runs for four wickets in 25 overs (Anil Sharma 59, Narinder Walia 29, Kulbir Singh 26 n.o., Deepak Mahajan 2 for 29); MSWS XI — 80 runs all out in 19 overs (Jasneet Bedi 30).

Fourth match: Kalsi CC — 177 runs for seven in 25 overs (Parmod Kataria 37, Amarjeet 28 n.o., Vikrant Joshi 26, Jagjeevan 2 for 32); Falcon CC — 105 runs all out in 24.2 overs (Rajan 29, Jagjeevan 21, Baljeet Kalsi 3 for 12, Amarjeet 2 for seven, Parmod 2 for 31).

Taekwondo meet: The Chandigarh Taekwondo Association organised the India Cup Championship at the Sector 10 Skating Rink here today. Teams from HP, Punjab, UP, Delhi, Haryana, MP, Jammu and Kashmir, Maharashtra and the host Chandigarh took part in the meet.

The winners were as follows: Sub-junior girls — Taminder Kaur 1, Ishmeet Kaur 2; junior girls — Gurpreet Kalhon 1, Sonika 2, Sanpreet 3; senior girls — Manpreet Kaur 1, Anshita 2.

Boys (5-7 years) — Satnam and Gurpreet 1; 10-12 years — Gurpreet 1, Vanich 2; 12-14 years — Vishavjeet 1, Gurpreet Singh 2, Gaganjot Kahlon 3; 40-45 kg — Sudhir 1, Ranjit Kumar 2; Gaurav 3; 45-50 kg — Amit Srivastava 1, Ravi Negi 2, Jaypal 3; 50-54 kg — Vijay Prasad 1, Vinod Kumar 2, Vijay Bhardwaj 3; 60-64 kg — Vishal Goyal 1, Bali Bahadur 2, Anurag Shukla 3; above 70 kg — Manik Jain 1, Gurharminder Singh 2, Aman Kumar 3.

Yoga camp: The Chandigarh Yoga Sabha organised a free yoga camp which was inaugurated by the local MP, Mr Pawan Bansal, at Divya Yog Mandir in Shivalik Enclave of Mani Majra. Mr Bansal said yoga was a part of Indian culture and everyone should adopt it. He also said yoga would not only benefit individuals but also help build a prosperous nation where citizens had sound mind and the body.

He was impressed by various kriyas and asanas shown by sadaks, including women. Earlier, Mr Roshan Jindal, Chairman of the sabha, welcomed Mr Bansal.Back

Fire Services Day celebrated

CHANDIGARH, April 15 — The Chandigarh Fire Service celebrated Fire Services Day here yesterday. Homage was paid to martyrs who laid down their lives while saving those of others. A function was organised on the occasion during which the services flag was hoisted. Fire day lapel pins were also pinned on the persons who had assembled near the Sector 17 fire station.

Besides this, cinema slides were shown in various halls in the city. Fire safety drills will be carried out in the city the next week. Later, a procession of all the fire brigade vehicles was taken out in the city.Back


 

Free legal aid for underprivileged

DERA BASSI, April 15 — The local police will provide free legal aid to the handicapped, Scheduled Castes, weaker sections and poor people, said the DSP, Mr H.S. Bhullar, while chairing a meeting of local residents, here today.

The DSP had called the meeting to review the law and order situation in Dera Bassi subdivision.

"Scuffle cases will be taken up by the lok adalats instead of registering them in local police stations. Persons having annual income less than Rs 18,000 will be given free legal aid," he disclosed.

To maintain the law and order situation and control crime, he appealed the Sarpanches to put thikri pehras more vigilantly in their respective villages.

He further directed industrialists, hotel and dhaba owners and residents to submit the addresses along with photographs of their servants and guests who are staying with them soon.Back
