Trauma care can save mishap
victims CHANDIGARH, April 9 The management of trauma patients has come up as a super-specialised discipline in saving high death rate possibilities following road accidents. Trauma and various related aspects, including participation of society in patient care, were underlined at the New millennium continuing medical education 2000 - trauma workshop organised by the Northern Chapter of Association of Surgeons of India at Government Medical College, Sector 32 , here today. The branch needed cross -faculty infrastructure . The Department of Surgery oversees the operational aspects at Government Hospital. Prof S.P. Kaushik, chairman of the department, said trauma management was a super-specialised discipline. There were hospitals which catered exclusively to trauma patients. Various faculties involved included those dealing with head, chest, abdomen, bones and other aspects. The main speakers at the workshop were Prof V.K. Kak, Director-cum-Principal of Government Medical College, Prof I.C. Pathak, a former Director of the PGI, Prof B.L.Talwar, a former Head of Surgery Department at the PGI, Dr P.C. Sood, president of the Northern India Association of Surgeons, Dr R.J. Singh, and Prof T.K. Chatopadhya. Nearly 200 delegates from the region participated in the workshop, the Organising Secretary, Dr A.K. Attri, said. The list included 24 subject experts. Prof Kaushik pointed out that the subject was pertinent in todays context because of a large number of accidents in and around the city. Another aspect central to the discussions was societal awakening for accident victims care. People needed to understand that trauma patients brought to hospital after an hours delay were poor cases. The police needed to assure people that helping patients would not be an inconvenience to helpers. Often the police follows the helpers for a long period after the accident, going on asking details, which promote people to neglect an accident victim on the road, a doctor said. Blood donation collection at the host college was satisfactory but added blood supply was an additional assurance for better functioning, Prof Kaushik said. The Chairperson said
there had been a considerable improvement in trauma care
at GMC. Earlier, complicated cases were referred to the
PGI. At the moment, there were seven well-equipped
operation theatres for these. The A-Block of the main
hospital would be exclusively reduced to Emergency
Services Block once the entire layout was complete. |
