Suspect denied bail

SAS NAGAR, April 9 — The bail application of Surinder Nindra, one of the suspects in a case of cheating, has been rejected by Mr Justice T.H.B. Chalapathi of the Punjab and Haryana High Court. The local police had registered a case against four property dealers of Nayagaon.

The petitioner, along with Devinder, Narata Singh and Bhaj Singh — had been booked under Sections 420, 467, 471, 506 and 120-B of the IPC on a complaint lodged by Mr Sarabjit Singh of Karoran.

He had lamented that the persons had transferred his plot in their name through cheating and fraud. Earlier, the bail plea of the suspects had been rejected by a Sessions Court at Ropar.

Singers entertain at Press Club function

CHANDIGARH, April 9 — Several eminent Punjabi folk singers enthralled the audience for hours in the Press Club on Friday evening.

Held under the banner — Aai Baisakhi — and organised by Mr Surinder Singh, Chairman of the cultural committee of the club, the programme coincided with the installation of the newly elected governing council of the club, including President, Mr Jagtar Singh Sidhu, General Secretary, Mr Sarabjit Singh Pandher, Vice-Presidents, Mr Sanjeev Chopra and Mr Ashok Puri, Joint Secretaries, Mr Rakesh Raki and Nalin Acharya, and Finance Secretary, Mr Nand Lal Gupta.

Among those who presented the programme were Sardool Sikander, Suchet Bala, Manmohan Waris, Sunita Bhatti, Sarbjit Cheema, Ashok Masti, Pammi Bai, Baboo Mann and Balmukand Sharma.

The programme started with a religious song sung by Suchet Bala. Then came the turn of Manmohan Waris, who has created a niche in modern Punjabi folk by singing with his distinct style. His presentation Hat Jao Mundio and Kamal ho gay created the right atmosphere. While with his hilarious comedy, Balmukand Sharma regaled the audience, established singer Sunita Bhatti entertained with her popular song Mithi mithi bandla de bhur ve.

Ashok Masti’s Punjabiyan di ho gai wah bai wah set the atmosphere of bhangra and there were many to dance to the tune set by him. Sardool Sikander came out with his popular songs including Ishk varandi char gai. It was Sarbjit Cheema’s presentation which took the programme towards its climax. His popular number, a hit with most music TV channels Rangle Punjab di sifat sunava made all present to dance.

Pammi Bai satisfied his fans with his popular song Jee ne jann nu karda, rangli dunia ton and Baboo Mann impressed with his latest numbers, including Needran Ni aundian and Pind pehra lagda.

When Candy Brar compered the programme, the Punjab Finance Minister, Capt Kanwaljit Singh, presented mementoes to the artistes. In the end, President of the club, Mr Jagtar Singh Sidhu, presented a vote of thanks.
