Specialists examine disabled

CHANDIGARH, April 8 — The Directorate of Social Welfare and the YTTS organised a special medical check-up camp for disabled people at Mauli Jagran today. Dr V.K. Kak, Director-Principal, Government Medical College Hospital, inaugurated the camp where the disabled participants were examined by various specialists, including orthopaedicians, ophthalmologists and others.

Thirty-five participants were brought to the camp by special transport from Ram Darbar on arrangements made by Mr K.S. Raju, a retired IAS officer engaged in social work.

According to Mr Prithi Chand, Director, Social Welfare, all 116 participants who were examined at the camp were also asked to fill in proformas and forms for their identity cards to avail themselves of various benefits available to them under different schemes, including grant of monthly pension.

Those who needed special medical attention have been advised to visit the Sector 32 Government Medical College and Hospital where if need be special surgeries would be conducted to cure them of their disabilities.

Mr Prithi Chand said that all participants would be issued photo-identity cards by the Subdivisional Magistrate.

This was the first camp of its type to be organised in the city.Back

CHANDIGARH, April 8 — A medical check-up was organised by HelpAge India and the Satyakash Charitable Trust here today.

As many as 160 patients were examined during the camp.

Fourteen patients were selected for cataract operations. Around 40 were treated for dental ailments.Back

PEC, WWC win

CHANDIGARH, April 8 — A superb performance by Satish Chaudhary, who scored 52 runs and took four wickets for 23 runs, helped Punjab Engineering College, Sector 12, beat United Insurance Corporation by 108 runs in the inaugural Salzer Cup league cricket tournament, being organised by District Panchkula Cricket Association, here today.

Electing to bat first, PEC lost the wicket of Manoj quickly. Satish Chaudhary and Noble Dhingra, who scored 81 runs, were involved in a partnership of 105 runs. Noble Dhingra hit one six and 12 fours. The PEC team scored 227 runs in the stipulated 20 overs.

In reply, UIC got off to a flying start as Ajay Sharma and Subhash put on 50 runs in the first six overs. Batish claimed four wickets for 119 runs.

In another match, Vaneet Chawla (41 n.o.) enabled Haryana Warehousing Corporation defeat CDA Western Command by nine wickets. Fielding first, Western Command set a target of 103 runs to HWC, with main contributions coming from B.S. Adhikari (38) and Sameer (28).

HWC got a solid start from Vaneet Chawla (41) and Sandeep Sandhu (26), who put up 72 runs for the first wicket partnership in 10 overs. HWC scored the required runs with nine wickets in hand.

Chess championship: The Chandigarh Chess Association will hold the UT under-12 and under-14 chess championship for boys and girls on April 15 and 16 at Chess Centre, Sector 42 sports complex, according to Mr Vipnesh Bhardwaj, Secretary of the association. Two players from each category will take part in the Sub-Junior Nationals, to be held in Ahmedabad in Gujarat in May.Back

Train cops for duties: Jacob

CHANDIGARH, April 8 — Punjab Governor and UT Administrator, Lt Gen J.F.R. Jacob (retd) today underlined the need to impart specialised training to police, especially wireless operators and computer operators, as well as those assigned to investigate economic offences or cyber crimes.

Jacob was reviewing the city's law and order situation here today. Among those who attended the meeting were Advisor Vineeta Rai, Home Secretary M.P. Singh, IGP S. K. Singh, DC M. Ramashekhar, SSP Parag Jain, SSP (Hq) Ajay Kashyap and SSP, (Ops) Asad Farooqui, besides the SDPOs.

The Administrator expressed his satisfaction at the beat system now set up in the city and said he had received feedback that is being strengthened. "Cops are showing a friendly face to the people and the police-public interface is improving," he noted. He said the police control room should closely monitor the wireless network; he felt this area needed improvement.Back


 

Certificate mandatory

CHANDIGARH, April 8 — The Punjab Urban Planning and Development Authority (PUDA) has made the occupation certificate mandatory for house owners under Rule 10 of the PUDA (Building) Rules, 1996. The occupation certificate will be issued only after a building is complete in all respects.

In case of a partially completed building, a partial completion certificate will be issued. In case of sewer connection, obtained occupation certificate has also been mandatory unlike the earlier practice when the sewer connection was released without the occupation certificate. Levying of extension fee has also been linked with the occupation certificate.Back



 

Flights to Kulu revised

CHANDIGARH, April 8 — Jagsons, a private airline, has decided to revise its Delhi-Kulu-Delhi, Delhi-Shimla-Kulu-Shimla-Delhi and Kulu-Chandigarh-Kulu schedules from April 15.

According to Mr Suresh Bhambri, Manager of the airline here, the Kulu-Chandigarh-Kulu flight will operate on all week days but Sundays. The airline would use Dornier 228 aircraft on all these three Sectors.

The Kulu-Chandigarh-Kulu flight would arrive here at 12.50 p.m. after taking off from Kulu at 12.10 p.m. and depart for Kulu at 1.10 p.m.

The Delhi-Shimla-Kulu-Shimla-Delhi flight on all days, except Sundays, would arrive at Shimla at 8.30 a.m. after leaving the Union Capital at 7.30 a.m. and depart for Kulu from Shimla at 8.50 a.m. and reach Kulu at 9.20 a.m. After leaving Kulu at 9.40 a.m., the aircraft would reach Shimla at 10.10 a.m. and depart for the final lap for Delhi at 10.30 a.m.

The direct Delhi-Kulu flight would take off at 7 in the morning on all days except Thursdays and reach Kulu at 8.20 and fly back from there at 8.40 a.m. to reach Delhi at 10 a.m.Back



 

'Compensation for land not enough'

SAS NAGAR, April 8 — The Deputy Commissioner of Ropar, yesterday, chaired a meeting of the district officials and members of the Sohana Circle Sangarsh Committee to decide on the compensation to be offered for the land being acquired for further expansion of the town.

The meeting ended with the committee disagreeing to the compensation being offered by the Deputy Commissioner. Besides the local MLA, Ms Daljeet Kaur, the other officials who attended the meeting were the SDM, Mr O.P. Popli; the DDPO, Mr Kuldeep Singh, and the Estate Officer of PUDA, Mr G.S. Ghuman.

Mr Devinder Singh, Convener of the committee, said meeting was an eyewash as the Administration had already decided the acquisition rate to be offered to the farmers. He said the Administration had offered Rs 10 lakh per acre, whereas, the prevailing land rates were much higher. The committee sought the implementation of the land pooling scheme announced by the previous Congress government.Back



 

Chennai MC men in city

CHANDIGARH, April 8 — A 12-member delegation of the Chennai Municipal Corporation’s Standing Committee on education, parks and playfields, met officials and councillors of the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation here today.

The visiting delegation was informed about the development, maintenance of small playfields, parks, gardens and working of the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation.

Earlier, the delegation led by Mr R.S. Muthu was received by the Mayor, Mrs Shanta Abhilashi, the Commissioner, Mr M.P. Singh, and the Chief Engineer, Mr Puranjit Singh, besides others.

The meeting lasted about an hour during which views were shared on various issues of common interest. Later, the delegation visited Shanti Kunj, Fragrance Garden, Rose Garden and other places.Back
