Tennis
coach Kapoor retires CHANDIGARH, March 31 Lachhman Das Kapoor retired today from the Chandigarh Sports Department after serving as a tennis coach for 18 years. In his over 36-year-long career in Chandigarh and Patiala, he helped in producing many national and international tennis players. Because of these achievements, he was given the Chandigarh State Award twice. Mr M.G. Devasahayam, a former DC of Chandigarh, brought him here from Patiala in 1982. It was Kapoor who laid the foundation of tennis in Chandigarh. The CLTA and Lake Club tennis courts were established by him. His eldest son, Pawan Kapoor, is an international tennis player of repute and was the first to get the prestigious ATP ranking in the region. The whole family of L.D. Kapoor is dedicated to tennis. his younger son, Devender Kapoor, and daughter Varsha run a tennis academy at the YMCA in Sector 11. His grandson karan Patnaik was the state champion in the under-10 age group. Coaches of Chandigarh gave him a tearful farewell. Mr J.P.S. Sidhu, Joint Director Sports of Chandigarh, presided over the function and said the city would lose one of its best coaches. Even after serving for
36 years, Kapoor wants to continue training children. His
ambition is to establish a tennis academy if the
Chandigarh Administration provides him land for the
purpose. |

Rohit for national chess CHANDIGARH, March, 31
Ripudaman Singh, a student of St Xaviers
Senior Secondary School, Sector 44, and Rohit Chadha of
Bhavan Vidyalaya, Sector 27, have been selected to
represent the UT in the 10th Under-18 National Chess
Championship to be held at Jamshedpur (Bihar) from April
6 to 14. This was said by Dr Vipnesh Bhardwaj, Secretary
of the Chandigarh Chess Association. Both players had
been performing well and practice at the Sector 42 Sports
Complex. |
Dera Bassi ready for
census DERA BASSI, March 31 The subdivisional authorities have made arrangements for conducting the census of India-2001 of the subdivisions, which will start on April 6. After the formation of Dera Bassi as subdivision, 132 villages and nine un-inhabited villages (Mauja Be Chirag) have been come under its jurisdiction. They were earlier in Rajpura subdivision. The Sub-Division Census Officer (SDCO), Mr Sher Singh Sidhu, SDM, has created 368 enumeration blocks. Besides 480 enumerators, 87 supervisors, one census charge officer and two assistant census charge officers (for rural areas) have been pressed to duty. Ms Inderjit Kaur Kang, Tehsildar, will be the census charge officer. The Executive Officers of Zirakpur and Dera Bassi will look after the census. Two special charges of the army have appointed for census in the Ammunition Depot, Dapper and 474 Engineer Regiment, Zirakpur. Mr Sidhu, says the census staff will participate in the first rehearsal on April 6 and 7 at the local Community Hall. The second rehearsal will be held on April 27 and 28. The house listing will be carried out from May 3 to 24. The actual census will be carried out from February 9 to 28, 2001. However, a door-to-door census in the Army areas would be done by the Army personnel only, he said. The SDCO said that it
was the legal as well as moral duty of every citizen to
give correct information to the census staff. The data
collected is used for the formulation of various plans
for the countrys progress. He assured the residents
that the information collected by the staff would be kept
confidential. It would not be given to any other
department. |

auctions parking lots CHANDIGARH, March 31 The Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh (MCC) today netted an amount of Rs 3,21,500 through the auction of three parking lots adjacent to three cinema halls in the city. At an auction held here under the supervision of Mr IS Sokhey, Superintending Engineer (B and R), the maximum amount of Rs 1.60 lakh was received through the auction of car parking near the Batra Theatre in Sector 37. Similarly, the civic body earned Rs 95,500 for the auction of the parking lot near the Kiran Theatre in Sector 22. The parking lot adjacent to the Nirman Theatre in Sector 32 fetched Rs 66,000. Mr Des Raj Tandon,
Senior Deputy Mayor and Mr Bachan Singh, councillor, were
observers for the auction of the parking lots, which have
been auctioned for a period of one year. |
