Free medical camp on
March 24 CHANDIGARH, March 21 The Department of Chest Diseases and Tuberculosis, GMCH-32, is organising a free medical camp on the occasion of World Tuberculosis day on March 24 at Government Senior Secondary School, Maloya village. The camp is being arranged for the benefit of patients of tuberculosis and other chronic lung ailments from Maloya and nearby areas. The area has been chosen as a larger number of patients are reporting to the hospital from this disease. During the camp, specialists from GMCH-32 will examine patients and perform necessary investigations like sputum examination, lung function tests etc. The patients will also be given medicines and treatment devices free of cost. Besides this, lectures and discussions will also be held by the specialists for the patients and general public to improve their awareness about tuberculosis and other respiratory diseases. The Professor and Head
of the department of Chest Diseases maintains that the
camp is being specially organised for those poor patients
who could not prioritise their health requirements over
their daily bread and butter. He pointed out that in most
of these cases where they neglect health, they land up in
hospitals in advanced stages of the disease. |
Junior national carrom
teams chosen CHANDIGARH, March 21 Nabhi Sahni of St Stephen's School, Sector 45, and Rozerio Sampson of SD Public School, Sector 32, will be the captains of the Chandigarh girls' and boys' teams, respectively, for the XXVIII Junior National and Inter-state Carrom Championship to be held at Faridabad from March 24 to 28. According to Mr R.S. Yadav, the teams are as follows: Boys Charrukh Goyal (SD Public School-32), Ramanpreet Pahwa (Shishu Niketan-22), Baninder Singh (Government Model Senior Secondary School-35), Sumit Chakarvorthy and Dhruva (both of Mount Carmel, Sector 46). Girls Puneet Lamba (St Stephen's-45), Nidhi (Bhavan Vidyalaya, Sector 27) and Pallavi (Mount Carmel, Sector 46). Mr Ravinder Sharma, Mr R.S. Yadav, Mr D.S. Aithani and Mr K.S. Patwal will be the officials accompanying the teams. Meanwhile, Mr Mahesh Sekhri, Secretary of the Chandigarh Carrom Association, will be the Deputy Tournament Director for the championship. Rama Banga: Rama Banga, a student of Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 20, won a bronze medal in the 45th National School Games held at Patiala recently. A Class XI student, she trains at Moti Ram Arya Senior Secondary School, Sector 27, under Neelam Sharma, a Sports Authority of India coach. She won the medal in the ribbon event of the rhythmic gymnastics competitions. Best upcoming player: Jagdeep Kaur, a student of Shivalik Public School, Sector 41, was adjudged best upcoming player at the 45th Junior National Ball Badminton Championship, which concluded at Jaipur on March 16. She played at centre position in the team. Chandigarh secured the seventh place. In pool matches, Chandigarh beat Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal and Goa but lost to Karnataka. In the matches to decide placings, UT girls lost to Maharashtra 19-29, 25-29. They defeated Hyderabad 29-17, 29-18. The UT boys secured the ninth place. Sport meet: The Gram Panchayat of Maloya will organise its 17th sport tournament on March 25 and 26 in which kabaddi, athletics and volleyball competitions will be held. On these two days, free langar will also be served. The kabaddi matches will be held in the 37 kg, 47 kg, 57 kg and 62 kg categories. Cash prizes, ranging from Rs 100 to Rs 5,000, will be distributed among the position holders. Judo team: A 14-member UT judo team comprising seven boys and an equal number of girls has been selected by the Amateur Judo Association of Chandigarh for the National Sub-Junior Championship to be held at Puri (Orissa) from March 27 to 31, according to Mr N.S. Thakur, Secretary of the association. The team is as follows:

City police to come out
with newsletter CHANDIGARH, March 21 To further cement police community relations, the Chandigarh Police will bring out a newsletter this week. With this, the force will be the first police organisation to bring out a newsletter which will act as a handy reckoner for the public and will contain all requisite information about the force. Titled COPS Newsletter, the four-page newssheet will be a monthly in English to begin. The information sheet will contain details of ongoing crimes, various prohibitory orders in force, the crime graph, besides the name, designation and telephone number of the officer to be contacted in an emergency or for specific grievances. Mr Parag Jain, SSP, confirmed that the newsletters launch had been delayed due to some initial teething problems and the preoccupation with other duties. It will basically be a communication link with the public and an effort on their part to make the people aware about the functioning of the police. It will act as a medium of soliciting the help of the city residents in helping the force to ensure that the city not only remains beautiful but crime free, he said while elaborating on the idea behind the novel venture. The newsletter will contain details of important cases worked out by the police with the active assistance of the public, the good work done by samaritans, the punishment given to police officers, besides the good work done by their personnel. Sources said it was the brainchild of Mr C S R Reddy, the previous SSP. The newsletter would give information about the various schemes being run by them and whom to contact in case one wants to avail of them. Similarly, the people would also be educated about the importance of passing on information about any unlawful activity and the presence of shady characters in their neighbourhood. The need for obeying traffic rules, in view of the fatal accidents in the past, would be stressed. Besides the offences for which a person could be challaned the quantum of fine would also be displayed. For the convenience of the public, information about forthcoming traffic diversions on account of functions or other public utility services for the coming month would be printed in the previous edition. The newsletter would also have writeups about the modus operandi of various criminal gangs that are operative in the city and its vicinity and the precautions to be taken to prevent any untoward happening in their locality. The importance of sharing any information with the beat staff of the sector would also be stressed. A section would also have names, photographs and the last known address of known criminals who have the ability to commit the same crime again. The similar procedure would be followed in case of those criminals, who are out of jail after securing bail or are on parole, and are known to have gone to their old ways. There would be articles by professionals who will advise the public about the steps to be taken to secure their vehicles and houses against theft and burglaries. The residents would also
be asked to send in their contributions, and suggest ways
to make policing more effective and people friendly. The
newsletter would be distributed to the residents through
the beat staff personnel, he added. |
School's
construction stayed SAS NAGAR, March 21 A Kharar court has stayed the construction of a school building being raised by the management of Sanjay Public School on a site in Sector 70 allotted by the Punjab Urban Planning and Development Authority (PUDA). The stay has been granted by ACJ (Junior Division), Ms Neelam Arora, till March 25. The residents of the
area had gone to the court, seeking permanent injuction
restraining the school management from raising the
building on the site on the plea that it was affecting
their health and property. They had pleaded that the
allotment by PUDA was in violation of the norms of the
Union Ministry of Environment. |
