No new taxes in Haryana Budget
Move to downsize govt
CHANDIGARH, March 14 — The Budget estimate for 2000-2001, presented in the Haryana Assembly today, put deficit in the year to Rs 97.79 crore. In his Budget speech Finance Minister Sampat Singh said the coming year was likely to open with a deficit of Rs 196.77 crore and close with a deficit of Rs 294.56 crore, indicating deficit of Rs 97.79 crore in the year.

‘Sangat’ asked to reject edict
AMRITSAR, March 14 — Even as the five Sikh priests have rejected the “hukamnamas” excommunicating Bibi Jagir Kaur, SGPC chief, three high priests and two more from the Sikh Panth, Giani Puran Singh, Jathedar, Akal Takht, has reiterated that an edict once issued cannot be withdrawn.

Bibi Jagir Kaur to participate in Hola Mohalla
JALANDHAR March 14 — In what may be a defiance of the Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Puran Singh’s edict, the “excommunicated” Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee chief, Bibi Jagir Kaur, today asserted that she would participate in the Hola Mohalla celebrations at Anandpur Sahib on March 19.

NEW DELHI, Mar 14 — The US President, Mr Bill Clinton, wants the Lahore process to be “re-energised”, the American Ambassador to India, Mr Richard F. Celeste, said here today.Admitting there were differences in perceptions on the Kashmir issue between India and the USA, he, however, contended that Washington had supported the Prime Minister, Mr Atal Behari Vajpayee’s initiative when he went to Lahore, Mr Celeste told reporters.

CPI asks ministers to resume office
NEW DELHI, March 14 — The crisis in the ruling Left Front in West Bengal over the “denial” of a Rajya Sabha ticket to the CPI ended today, with the party directing its two ministers in the Jyoti Basu Cabinet to resume office and the state unit to revise its stand for the “sake of Left unity.”

Liquor syndicate smashed
LUDHIANA, March 14 — Punjab’s most powerful liquor syndicate which monopolised almost the entire liquor trade in Ludhiana last year was smashed today at the annual auction of the liquor vends in the district conducted under a new excise policy framed by the state government.
