Chautala govt will not stay: Hooda
From Our Correspondent

ROHTAK, March 5 — The HPCC President, Mr Bhupinder Singh Hooda, has claimed that the INLD-BJP coalition government in the state, led by Mr Om Prakash Chautala, will not be able to complete a five-year term and will succumb to the "differences" prevalent between the two parties.

Talking to reporters here today, Mr Hooda said the INLD and the BJP leaders "camouflaged" the differences between them and projected a different picture before the people. He said the differences would be out in the open again and it would be impossible to contain the resentment generated among the BJP workers on this court.

Mr Hooda said the Congress had improved its performance in the Assembly polls as the poll percentage of the party had increased to about 32 to 33 per cent of the total.

Replying to a query, the Congress leader said the party could have won more seats if the distribution of tickets had been done with more care. He admitted to an "error of judgement" on this score.

Mr Hooda said he did not propose the name of Mr Bhajan Lal as leader of the Congress Legislative Party (CLP) as reported in a section of the media. He said the CLP leader was elected through a consensus and no voting was held for the purpose. Regarding the issues before the coming Assembly session, the HPCC chief said the party would raise issues like completion of the SYL canal, the financial situation of the state, the law and order situation and "irregularities" in the recently held elections. He said there were indications that the state was heading towards a financial crisis and the government was finding it difficult to give salaries and pension on time.

Mr Hooda criticised the hike in the prices of urea and PDS items in the Union Budget. He said the Vajpayee government had proved that its "anti-poor" and "anti-farmers" image had not changed. He apprehended that the prices of essential commodities would increase very soon and the common man would thus be victimised. He also condemned the hike in the price of petrol following a rise in sales tax in the state.

PTI: The Congress-brokered truce between former Chief Minister Bhajan Lal and Haryana Pradesh Congress Committee (HPCC) President Bhupinder Singh Hooda on the election of the CLP leader developed cracks on Sunday with the latter denying proposing Mr Bhajan Lal's name.

Mr Hooda denied here having proposed Mr Bhajan Lal's name for the post of the CLP leader challenging AICC General Secretary and party's Haryana incharge Moti Lal Vohra's earlier statement in this regard made in the presence of another AICC General Secretary Ambika Soni and HPCC President himself.

Mr Hooda told reporters here, "I had not proposed the name of Bhajan Lal and will not do so in future also".

He also claimed that he had written a letter to Mr Vohra opposing his earlier statement to the Press in this regard.

The cracks were visible on the day of CLP leadership election itself when supporters of Mr Bhajan Lal and Mr Hooda violently clashed outside HPCC office on March 1.
