Jacob expresses concern over rising crime in city
CHANDIGARH, Feb 29 — The UT Administrator, Lt Gen J. F. R. Jacob (retd), expressed his concern at the rising number of thefts and burglaries in the city, besides the need for setting up an elaborate organised parking system for the city.

Night school begins functioning
CHANDIGARH, Feb 29 — The first in the series of night schools, which the Education Department, UT, had announced for the slum children of the city, began this evening at the Government High School, Sector 25. This school would be run by Mr Vineet Khanna’s Youth Technical Training Society, a NGO.

70 posts of teacher vacant in PEC
CHANDIGARH, Feb 29 — Nearly 70 out of about 150 regular teaching posts are lying vacant in Punjab Engineering College, placing a question mark on its academic stature.

City residents welcome hike in defence outlay
CHANDIGARH, Feb 29 — Among the Budget proposals presented by the Union Finance Minister, Mr Yashwant Sinha, city residents have appreciated an increase in the defence outlay by nearly Rs 13,000 crore and the fact there will be no additional burden of income tax, while the industry is happy over the move to simplify excise duty structure and sops offered to fast moving information technology sector.

CHANDIGARH, Feb 29 — Disposing of an application by former UT Chief Engineer K.K. Jerath seeking the supply of certain documents, UT District and Sessions Judge B.S. Bedi has held that the applicant is not entitled to receive the same as the prosecution “has not relied upon them”.

Relief for family of deceased employee
CHANDIGARH, Feb 29 — Nearly three-and-a-half years after a government employee succumbed to his injuries in a road accident, UT Additional District and Sessions Judge S.K. Goel has granted a compensation of Rs 6.2 lakh to his family.

Shopkeeper convicted
CHANDIGARH, Feb 29 — A Sector 21 shopkeeper, accused of selling pulses, salt, flour and other commodities, without licence, was today convicted and sentenced to imprisonment till the rising of the court by UT Chief Judicial Magistrate Sant Prakash.

Navrang 2000 exhibition
PANCHKULA, Feb 29—A painting exhibition Navrang 2000 with works of 32 local artists on display will be inaugurated at Swastik Vihar on March 2. The exhibition is being held by the Artists Association of Panchkula in collaboration with the All-India Arts and Crafts Society and the North Zone Cultural Centre.
