Immolation bid by lawyer DHARAMSALA, Feb 5 The police today thwarted a self-immolation bid by Kangra lawyer Surinder Bhararia in protest against his rejection for the post of Legal Officer. Mr Bhararia reached the Deputy Commissioner's office at 11.15 a.m. and doused himself with kerosene he carried in a can. Police personnel led by the town DSP were already waiting for the lawyer at the site. Mr Bhararia had threatened on February 2 that in case the government did not appoint him as a Legal Officer within 72 hours, he would immolate himself outside the office of the Deputy Commissioner. The lawyer's plea was that despite clearing the examination for the post, held by the Himachal Pradesh Public Service Commission under the OBC category, he had not been selected. Mr Bhararia said the lone post under the category has been filled by a candidate from the general category. He is learnt to have approached the MLA from Kangra and the Agriculture Minister, Mr Vidyasagar, in this connection, but to no avail. The lawyer's family is learnt to have approached the police to prevent him from taking such a drastic step. A large number of leaders from various political parties were present at the DC's office to prevent Mr Bhararia from immolating himself. Among them were Congress MLA from Nagrota G.S. Bali and a Janata Dal leader and former MLA Capt Pratap Chaudhary. Interestingly, Mr Bhararia had contested the 1998 Lok Sabha elections as an Independent. |
50-lakh package for HPU
sought SHIMLA, Feb 5 Mr Subhash Puri, a member of the executive council of the Himachal Pradesh University (HPU), has urged the Chief Minister, Mr P.K. Dhumal, to provide a special package of at least Rs 50 lakh for basic amenities on the campus. Mr Puri, who called on the Chief Minister on Thursday, apprised him of the deteriorating condition of the HPU and also the unacademic atmosphere there. He said even three decades after having been set up, the HPU had failed to provide the basic amenities to the staff and students. The roads were in a shabby condition and street lights were missing. Drinking water was also hardly available and staff members had to bring their own water bottles. There was no parking place for vehicles of visitors, he said. Mr Puri also brought to his notice the problems being faced by the occupants of the staff quarters on the campus. Stray cattle moved freely in the area, he complained. He pointed out that the
two other universities at Palampur and Solan, which were
set up just a few years ago, had better facilities than
the HPU. |

Snow delights apple growers SHIMLA, Feb 5 The two days of heavy snowfall has brought cheers for the apple growers of Himachal Pradesh who were so far upset over their crop prospects. The upper parts of Shimla district and other apple growing areas of the state are having snowfall since yesterday. The interior areas of the district had over 40 cm of snowfall since last evening. With this, the snow recorded during the current season has touched 98 cm. Scientists say this is enough to meet the requirements of the apple plants for a high yield of the crop. Dr S.P. Bhardwaj, Additional Director of the Fruit Research Station, Mashobra, told TNS here today that 54 cm of snowfall was recorded last year which resulted in a poor yield of the apple crop. About 1,200 to 1,600 hours of chilling period is required for the apple plants and so far over 1,100 hours of requirement has been met. This is sufficient for a good crop in the coming season. Snow is considered necessary for chilling and moisture requirements of the apple plants. This also helps in controlling pest and disease in the plants. Dr Bhardwaj said scientists were satisfied with the scattered snowfall this season. Todays snowfall was the heaviest of the six snowfalls during the past one month. Horticulturists were expecting better flowering of plants and resultant bumper apple crop due to the snow. The rabi crop has already suffered a setback in the plain areas of the state, where, because of delayed rain, about 20 per cent area remained unsown. About 40 per cent of the rabi production has been damaged. While the apple and
other orchards depend on rain and snow, of the 6 lakh
hectares of agricultural area in the state only 20 per
cent has irrigation facilities. |
3,000 Kashmiris in HP
subdivision NURPUR, Feb 5 The sudden increase in the strength of Kashmiris in Nurpur and Jawali subdivisions is worrying the police and intelligence agencies. According to information, as many as 3,000 Kashmiris from Kupwara, Poonch, Anantnag, Doda and Udhampur districts of Jammu and Kashmir are residing in various villages of these subdivisions. Most of them are labourers and shawl vendors. There is a popular
demand that the antecedents of the Kashmiri verified. |
Redesign sewerage scheme: DCC MANDI, Feb 5 The District Congress Committee President, Mr Sher Singh, yesterday demanded that the Sundernagar Sewerage Scheme should be redesigned to cope with the present-day pressure of the population of the town. He said the scheme designed about two decades ago would not work now and added that the redesigned project should take into account the population increase in the next 30 years. He alleged that irregularities had been committed in the execution of the second phase of the scheme. He argued that pipes of smaller diameter were being used which might choke within a few years. Mr Sher Singh also
alleged that in an exercise to benefit a few favourites
of a minister, the contract work had been divided into
three persons which had resulted in a loss of Rs 50 lakh
to the state exchequer. |
Cong provoking OBCs: minister KANGRA, Feb 5 The state Agriculture Minister, Mr Vidiaya Sagar, yesterday lambasted the Congress for provoking the other backward classes (OBCs). Addressing a press
conference he alleged Congress general secretary and MLA
from Nagrota Bagwan, Mr Gurmeet Singh Bali, was
pretending to be an OBC leader to gain political mileage. |
