SAS NAGAR, Jan 24 — The security personnel with the enforcement staff of the Punjab Urban Planning and Development Authority (PUDA) resorted to a mild lathi charge here today when some encroachers hurled stones at the staff during an ongoing drive to remove encroachments in Phase X.

Workers with the staff received minor injuries. The enforcement team had gone to Phase X to remove khokhas which had come up on PUDA land. Around 30 jhuggis in Sector 70 and unauthorised makeshift shops selling construction material were also removed during the drive.

Meanwhile, the local Anti-Encroachment Committee criticised the PUDA for delaying its drive to remove encroachments on road berms. Mr N.S. Minhas, President of the committee, said an oft-repeated statement of the officials that the drive had been stopped by higher officials was baseless.Back
