Live dental implant surgery performed
Tribune News Service

CHANDIGARH, Jan 17 — The three-day continuing medical education programme (CME) for faculty members of the Oral Health Sciences Centre, PGI, in the technique of Oral Implantology began here today. The programme concerns replacing single or multiple teeth and also to give a fixed complete denture.

The highlight of the day was a live surgery on a 60-year-old patient from Mohali. Dr Coonar, visiting Professor from Eastman Dental Institute, London, explained the process of insertion of implants into the bone and how their support could be used to build the teeth subsequently.

A patient who had no teeth in lower and upper jaws was given two implants in the lower jaw after a small surgical procedure under local anaesthesia. The implants were placed in precise holes made in the jaw bone under the gum. The patient is required to come for a review after a week but these fixtures normally take three to six months to fuse with the bone. After that, the implants will be uncovered and abutment posts attached. Later, denture would be placed on this jaw which would be immovable and can be removed only when required. The patient had before this tried a set of five dentures but could not be satisfied with even one of these.

Dr R. Welfare said that patients interested in going for these implants should be generally healthy for the surgery, lasting an hour or more. He should be a non-smoker. A “controlled diabetic” patient can also go in for these implants. Patients should also have the dexterity to play with the brush to maintain oral hygiene.

Earlier in his introductory lecture, Dr Coonar traced the history of implants, differences in the implants of various metals and their usefulness over conventional methods of replacing missing teeth.

According to Dr Coonar, the most successful implant system today is Branemark, which is made of 99.5 per cent titanium which is biocompatible. Dr Welfare said implants are also being used for improving the attachment system for artificial eye and ear.

Meanwhile, the visiting professors would deliver a lecture on “Oral Implantology” on January 19 at Hotel Sun Beam, Sector 22, for the benefit of the members of the Indian Dental Association, Chandigarh State Branch. Those interested can benefit from their expertise.Back
