India not to recognise Taliban

NEW DELHI, Jan 5 (UNI) — India today ruled out recognising the Taliban regime in Afghanistan, stating the fundamentals of the Afghan policy remained unchanged.

An External Affairs Ministry spokesman said here that India continued to recognise President Burhanuddin Rabbani’s government which was the legitimate regime in Afghanistan.

The spokesman was reacting to a statement by Taliban regime’s representative in New Year that India should accord legitimacy to his regime in view of the cooperation extended by it during the recent hijacking crisis.
