Shoaib Akhtar banned for suspect bowling action

ISLAMABAD, Dec 31 (PTI) — Express Pakistan paceman Shoaib Akhtar has been slapped a one-month ban from international cricket by the world body, ICC, for chucking to deal a big blow to the beleaguered Pakistan cricket team ahead of the triangular series starting in Australia on January 9.

The decision taken yesterday by a nine-member ICC panel on illegal deliveries has ruled the 23-year-old “Rawalpindi Express” out of the Carlton and United triangular one-day series, also involving Australia and India.

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Lt-Gen Tauqir Zia confirmed the ban, but said the panel will reconsider the decision in a month after viewing fresh videotapes of Akhtar’s action following corrective measures.

“We have been informed by the ICC about this unfortunate decision. We have been asked to work on Shoaib’s action,” Zia said, adding that the team was told of the decision soon after it landed in Australia.

“We hope Shoaib will be back in the team for the series against Sri Lanka in February,” Zia said. He clarified that “Shoaib has been banned only for this series and his case will be reconsidered when the panel meets again in a month’s time”.

Following the decision by the ICC panel, after viewing video footage of his action and holding an hour-long telephonic conference, the bowler is being sent back and is expected to return home in the next two days.

The young tearaway’s action was reported to the ICC by New Zealand match referee John Reid after Pakistan’s recent three-Test series in Australia.

In a fax-message to the Pakistan team in Australia, the ICC asked the team management not to consider Akhtar for the triangular series which starts with their opening tie against the hosts at Brisbane.

The decision of the ICC panel, comprising representatives from all the nine Test playing nations, was communicated to the Pakistani team manager Brig (retd) Mohammad Nasir. The tele-conference was arranged by Clive Hitchcock, the Director, Cricketing Operations of ICC.

Former fast bowling great Imran Khan is Pakistan’s representative on the throwing panel but could not be contacted in time for the meeting, the timing of which was highly criticised by PCB.

Pakistan was represented in the panel by coach Intikab Alam and newspaper reports here said some critics believed Alam being a leg spinner failed to put forward a strong argument on behalf of Akhtar.

The PCB as well as leading players of the past and present, including former skippers Imran Khan and Javed Miandad, had earlier strongly defended Akhtar while rejecting the allegations of chucking against him.

Zia had also said that PCB would defend Akhtar till the end and went ahead by including the bowler in the squad for Australia a fortnight ago.

John Reid had also sent video footage of Akhtar’s bowling in the Test series to back up his is complaint.

SYDNEY (AFP): Shoaib Akhtar said he was “totally shocked” after being banned today from international cricket by the game’s ruling over his bowling action, but vowed to return.

The besieged speedster is regarded as one of the fastest bowlers in the world with speeds reaching 155 kmph and only arrived in Perth with the Pakistan team last afternoon.

Akhtar said he was “totally shocked” and the decision meant he would now fly home on January 2.

“They’ve just told me to re-model my action, but I can’t say anything more because I’ll be in trouble, “he said.

Official concerns about the legality of his action were initially raised in the third Test in Perth by match referee John Reid, a New Zealander.

Nasir even suggested Akhtar would be in Australia longer than the bowler himself said he’d be.Top

Younis replaces Akhtar

ISLAMABAD, Dec 31 (PTI) — Veteran speedster Waqar Younis has been picked as replacement for Shoaib Akhtar in the Pakistan cricket team for the coming tri-series in Australia after the young tearaway was banned by the International Cricket Council for suspect bowling action.

Newly appointed chief of PCB advisory board Rameez Raja while confirming the selection of Younis, despite his recent tirade against skipper Wasim Akram after he was dropped from the squad, said the speedster had apologised for his outbursts, according to official APP news agency.

The return of Younis was necessitated after ICC slapped a one month ban on Akhtar for throwing, which was conveyed to the Pakistani team as soon as it reached Australia to participate in the tri-nation one-day series in which Australia and India are the other sides.

Tamil Nadu shock Punjab in semis

NEW DELHI, Dec 31 (UNI) — In a nerve wrecking match, Bihar overpowered a spirited Karnataka 73-66 to set up a title clash with Tamil Nadu who stunned holders and favourites Punjab 74-61 in the 50th Senior National Basketball Championship here today.

Earlier in the women’s section also Tamil Nadu girls defeated Punjab 42-39 to take the third spot.

Both men’s and women’s finals are slated for tomorrow. Railways will take on hosts Delhi in the women final to be followed by the Bihar-Tamil Nadu title encounter.

Playing a tactical game, Tamil Nadu out thought and outplayed Punjab in the first semifinal which never rose to any great height.

In the process Tamil Nadu repeated their 1987 Calcutta national championship performance over Punjab. That year Tamil Nadu had beaten Punjab to win the title.

An overconfident Punjab paid dearly for their tactless display which surprised their fans.

There was no scheme or strategy in their gameplan as Punjab went down. Tamil Nadu led 47-32 at half time.

Over dependence on Parminder (Sr) and Gagnesh Kumar also let down the defending champions.

Tamil Nadu played percentage game. They effectively marked Parminder and Gagnesh. Punjab had no such gameplan and that enabled their rivals to score with some ease.

Sugwareshwaran spearheaded Tamil Nadu’s assault and in the defence veteran Jeevananth, Shiva Shankar and Xavier foiled the Punjab moves.

Tamil Nadu coach Sukavaneshwar made astute changes and used his bench strength to the optimum. His planning was superb and the players justified his strategy.

After trailing by 15 points in the first half, Punjab came near to Tamil Nadu when they reduced the gap to five points (50-55) in the second half but after that their rivals simply took off.

The speed and stamina displayed by Tamil Nadu cagers caught Punjab players by surprise.

The defending champions on their run up to the semifinal had hardly met with any worthwhile resistance and that made them complacent.

Their star players, including Parminder, Gagnesh Kumar and Parminder (Jr) could not reproduce the form that they had displayed in the earlier matches.

Tamil Nadu had to wage some grim battles before they made it to the semifinals and that had toughened them. They showed no sign of awe against the much taller Punjab players.

The winners displayed better coordination and ball control. They covered the court well and their shooting was excellent.

Sugwareshwaran top scored with 20, while Gopinathan and Sridhar chipped in 19 points each.

For the losers Parminder and Vipin were the leading scorer with 18 points each while Gurcharnjit contributed 10 points.

In the women’s section, Tamil Nadu edged out Punjab 42-39 to take the third place. Tamil Nadu women trailed 17-20 at half time. However Tamil Nadu rallied back strongly in the second session to emerge winners.

For the losers Kiranjeet (16) Manpreet (9) Savitri (6) were the main scorers.

Tollygunge jump to second spot

NEW DELHI, Dec 31 (PTI) — Amal Dutta’s Tollygunge Agragami cemented their reputation as the most impressive side as they jumped to the second spot behind leaders Churchill Brothers of Goa with two well-fought wins in the National Football League.

The young outfit without big names trained by the veteran coach impressed many by finishing third in the tough Calcutta super league, and have continued their brilliant run by winning both their matches to emerge second with 10 points from three wins and a draw after completion of four matches.

Defending champions Salgaocar have slipped to third after they were held goal-less by Indian Telephone Industries and Dempo while East Bengal retained the fourth spot with seven points, followed by arch rivals Mohun Bagan, former winners JCT, Phagwara, FC Kochin, BSF, Mahindra and Mahindra, ITI and Dempo with pointless SBT languishing at the bottom.

Dutta’s boys made a dream start in their maiden appearance in the league by stunning title contenders East Bengal in their first match.

They continued the good work in the third round, beating SBT by a lone Sreekanta Dutta goal at Thiruvananthapuram. The newcomers then moved past Salgaocar, tied with Churchill at the top of the table, when they edged past BSF 2-1 in a hard-fought clash at Ludhiana.

Kajal Bhattacharjee and skipper Chandan Dass struck once each to settle the issue after BSF went ahead via Prashanta Das following a barren first session.

Salgaocar’s string of victories were brought to a halt as the star Goan side could not score against lowly ITI and Dempo while Goan rivals Churchill made good use of home conditions and maintained their victory march, defeating FC Kochin and struggling ITI 2-0 and 2-1, respectively.

Salgaocar, on a superb victory run in the last two months during which they won the Rovers, Durand and Super Cup and the first two matches of the NFL found themselves struggling for goals as striker Alvito D’Cunha and Joao Dos Santos proved ineffective in both of their outings.

Churchill on the other hand, cemented their early hold as emerging sole leaders with 12 points and an all-win record as all the 12 teams completed four games in the fourth edition of NFL being played on home and away basis.

East Bengal and Mohun Bagan again had mixed fortunes as they won a match and drew another. The two sides had three points from two matches (one win and one loss) - Bagan losing to JCT at Ludhiana.

While the yellow and orange brigade struggled past BSF by a lone goal and were held goal-less by JCT, winners of the inaugural edition in 1996-97, former champions Mohun Bagan were forced to share the point by Mumbai’s Mahindra and Mahindra before recovering to beat SBT 2-1 at home.

It was the third draw for Mahindras, who also shared points with FC Kochin and lying ninth in the 12-team field with three points from four matches.

The Mumbai outfit’s first round clash with ITI had also ended in a draw and their lone reverse was against Churchill.

A total of 25 matches were played between December 19 to 30 which included the first round between FC Kochin and SBT yesterday.

Kochin beat SBT by a lone goal and moved up to seventh place with five points (1-1-2) from four matches.

Kapil, Tendulkar call the tune
By Abhijit Chatterjee
Tribune News Service

CHANDIGARH, Dec 31 — It seems that more than the national selectors of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) it is the team management in Australia which has had a greater say in the selection of the Indian team for the three-nation one-day tournament involving India and Australia as also Pakistan to be played Down Under.

As it is the Indian team currently touring Australia has given a miserable performance, losing both Tests played so far and that too by very big margins. But more than just losing it seems the Indian cricketers, barring of course skipper Sachin Tendulkar, have lost their soul and are just going through the motions as the Australians have taken total control of the proceedings.

While agreeing that the Indian batsmen are performing under tremendous pressure against an attack which is world class on pitches which generate a fair amount of bounce, there is no reason for the Indians to go into a shell, thereby making their task all the more difficult. Also, the problems of the Indians were compounded by the fact that they played a bowler short in both Tests, thereby sending the signal that they were more content in playing for a draw rather than taking the battle into the enemy camp. And even the additional batsman was not able to avert defeat in both Tests.

Even the likes of Rahul Dravid and Saurav Ganguly, whose international record is as good as any international batsman, have not been able to adapt themselves to the hard and bouncy Australian wickets. If these two were able to give good support to their captain the result of both matches might well have been different. Also, the Indians are still struggling with their bowling which seems to be just short of international class even with the likes of Javagal Srinath and Anil Kumble in the squad.

But even after losing both Tests, the Indian team management in Australia (read Kapil Dev and Sachin Tendulkar) seems to be determined to play in the three-nation tournament, commencing on January 9, with an inexperienced team rather than recalling former skipper Mohammad Azharuddin and deposed wicketkeeper Nayan Mongia. The Indians needed the experience of both Azharuddin and Mongia because the injury of Ajay Jadeja (who has also been kept out of the team) has made the Indian team all the more weaker.

The induction of players like wicketkeeper Sameer Dighe or middleorder batsman Jacob Martin into the team for the series is a pointer to the powers wielded by Kapil Dev and Sachin Tendulkar, who made it certain that Mohammad Azharuddin was not included in the squad even if he has the experience and the class to tackle the Australian and Pakistan bowlers on the hard and bouncy Australian bowlers. That the former Indian captain is in good nick is apparent by his string of good scores in domestic cricket.

The selection of Sameer Dighe as the only wicketkeeper for the one-day series is even more intriguing. It must be remembered that when M.S.K.Prasad was injured just prior to the first Test between India and Australia at Adelaide the authorities had flown Nayan Mongia to Australia as the “second” wicketkeeper. But in Australia Mongia, who is too senior a cricketer to be treated as dirt, felt that he was not wanted in the team and soon he returned to India, it was given out by the team management that it wanted Sameer Dighe as the “second” wicketkeeper and not Mongia. And now it seems Sachin has been able to “accommodate” his Mumbai teammate in the national squad even if the likes of Mongia is forced to cool his heels in the wings. How well Sameer Dighe adapts himself to Australian conditions in the short time available (the one-day series starts on January 9) is to be seen given the low morale of the Indians already in Australia.

Nobody in his right frame of mind would oppose the induction of youngsters in the national squad. But earning the India cap should not be at the mercy of some Godfather. Rather, the player must earn the cap and prove it that he is worthy of wearing it. At the current moment, however, it does not seem so. It seems the Indian team management in Australia is more intent on keeping “senior” players out rather than ensuring that India do well in the one-day series after their miserable performance in the Test series.Top

Azhar alleges victimisation

MUMBAI, Dec 31 (UNI) — “It is not fair”. That is how Mohammad Azharuddin reacted to his being left out of the one day squad for the triangular series in Australia.

Azharuddin, who returned to Mumbai late yesterday night from Chennai after playing the South Zone Ranji Trophy match, felt that his being left out of the team was victimisation. “Look at my overall record, my scores in Ranji Trophy, Do I deserve to sit out?” he asked.

Azhar has got 480-500 runs in four matches in Ranji Trophy this season.

Yesterday’s selection committee meeting took over four hours and though the selectors said they could not get through Australia to talk to the team management. There is every reason to believe that the main contention was Azhar, whom the team management did not want.

Reliable sources have stated that yesterday the selectors were warned that Azhar would not play a single match even if he was selected in the squad.

The ups and downs football has gone through

LONDON, Dec 31 (Reuters) — England and the embryonic world governing body FIFA gave shape and form to soccer, destined to become the world’s global game by the turn of the century.

Proof that association football was part of the social fabric of England came in 1901 when a world record 110,820 people watched the English Cup final.

On the reverse side of the ledger in the following year 25 people died during the Scotland-England international in Glasgow, the game’s first major disaster.

The game soon captured the popular imagination in Europe and South America and in 1904 representatives from France, Belgium, Switzerland, Denmark, Sweden, Spain and the Netherlands met in Paris to form FIFA.

Although the game evolved in Europe, the first great international team of the century came from South America.

Uruguay won the Olympic Games titles of 1924 and 1928 before hosting and winning the first World Cup in 1930. Only 13 teams took part in the competition, but soccer had taken another major step forward.

Hugo Meisl’s Austrian “Wunderteam” and Vittorio Pozzo’s Italy were the dominant forces of the 1930s, with Italy winning the next two World Cups in 1934 and 1938.

That competition, played in the shadow of World War II was the last World Cup for 12 years and although Hungary and Brazil were to dominate the 1950s, it was Uruguay who won the first World Cup after the war.

Their shock 2-1 win over Brazil on July 16, 1950, at the Maracana Stadium in Rio De Janeiro was watched by a world record crowd of 203,500, an attendance unlikely ever to be bettered.

Hungary dominated the early 1950s and were defeated just once in 50 internationals between June, 1950, and November, 1955.

They were the first team to beat England on home soil, a famous 6-3 rout at Wembley in 1953 inspired by Ference Puskas, followed by a 7-1 victory in Budapest six months later.

Unfortunately their only loss in this period was the 1954 World Cup final which they lost 3-2 to West Germany after leading 2-0.

The 1950s were a golden decade, the last years when the game still retained something of its early sporting innocence, a time when fair play was still widespread, a time before spiralling wages and commercialism took a grip unlikely now to be loosened.

It was also the decade when Brazil won the World Cup for the first time, and the greatest player of all time made his presence known.

Edson Arantes Do Nascimento, henceforth known as Pele, introduced himself to the world in the 1958 World Cup finals as a 17-year-old and scored twice in the final as Brazil beat hosts Sweden 5-2.

He would go on to score more than 1,200 goals in a 21-year professional career and also lead Brazil to victory in the 1970 World Cup in Mexico.

Brazil’s performances in 1970, including their 4-1 destruction of Italy in the final, confirmed a team containing Pele, Jairzinho, Carlos Alberto, Rivelino and Tostao as the greatest international side ever.

While Brazil were the dominant international team of the time, no club side in the world could match Real Madrid who won the first five European Cup finals from 1956, culminating in their 7-3 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt in the 1960 final.

Two other teams could have laid claim to Real’s title as Europe’s greatest ever club side, but the fates decreed otherwise.

Torino won five successive Italian titles in the 1940s before their all-conquering team were killed when their aircraft crashed on the Superga mountain above Turin in 1949.

Manchester United’s “Busby Babes” side also looked destined for long-term success after winning the English title in 1956 and 1957 but the team was destroyed with the deaths of eight players in the Munich air crash of 1958.

It says much for the remarkable powers of Matt Busby, the legendary United manager, that within 10 years he built a new team who won the European Cup in 1968.

At the heart of that side was the long-haired northern Irish genius George Best, who more than anyone symbolised the fusion of soccer and the showbusiness worlds of the 1960s. Best was soccer’s first modern-day pin-up, the first Modern superstar.

In the following decade Johan Cryuff was at the heart of the total football philosophy of the Netherlands’ side who lost the 1974 World Cup final to West Germany. Cryuff also inspired Ajax to three European cups and took Barcelona to the Spanish title.

He was matched by West Germany’s Franz Beckenbauer, another pioneer of total football. Beckenbauer played a major role in West Germany’s 1972 championship win, the successful 1974 World Cup campaign and captained Bayern Munich to three consecutive European Cups.

While great players such as Cruyff and Beckenbauer and Argentina’s flawed genius Diego Maradona captured the imagination of millions of fans with their deeds, one man off the pitch helped catch millions more fans for the sport itself.

Joao Havelange, the autocratic head of FIFA for 24 years until stepping down in 1998, expanded the World Cup first from 16 to 24 teams then to 32 and added a host of minor competitions to FIFA’s timetable. A visionary backed by big business, he helped soccer really become the global game.

A price has been paid in terms of both deaths and destruction. Soccer has been blighted by hooliganism since the 1960s and drunken loutish fans, and some arrogant and insensitive policing have brought death to many countries where the game is played.

The most infamous examples are the Heysel Stadium disaster of 1985 which claimed 39, mostly Italian, lives before the European Cup final in Brussels, and the 1989 Hillsborough disaster when 96 Liverpool fans perished in overcrowded terracing at an F.A. Cup semifinal.

But soccer has survived and ends the century more popular than ever before.

The introduction of the Champions League, and the Bosman ruling of 1995 which by and large ended almost all transfer restrictions have revolutionised the sport.

The sport Pele dubbed “the beautiful game” continues to entrance, with Asia poised to stage its first World Cup in Japan and South Korea in 2002 and the emergence of Africa as a world force.

India down UAE for second win

DUBAI, Dec 31 (PTI) — Former champions India brightened their chances of topping group “A” as they scored their second straight win by thrashing UAE seniors 25-19 25-19 25-16 in the 5th Rashid International Volleyball Tournament here last night.

India, who had downed the strong Cuba in their inaugural encounter, proved unstoppable as they brushed aside the hosts to be just a step away from topping the group. India meet Pakistan late tonight in their final league clash.

In group B, Tunisia scored their first win in two matches when they defeated Australia 3-0 to keep their semifinal hopes alive. The African and Arab champions, who went down to holders Ukraine in the opener, recovered well to win 25-23 29-27 25-23.

Cuba scored their first win in two outings when they prevailed over Pakistan 3-2 in a hard-fought encounter that went the full distance while Ukraine registered their second straight win beating UAE juniors 3-0 on Wednesday night.

Cuba played their hearts out as they rallied twice from behind to eventually win 20-25 25-18 19-25 25-22 15-11.

Ukraine kept on course to top group B by handing out lowly UAE juniors their second straight defeat with a 25-16 25-13 25-15 margin.

Double crown for Urska Vesenjak
Tribune News Service

CHANDIGARH, Dec 31 — The final of the $ 10,000 ITF Women’s Tennis Tournament here proved to be an anti-climax today. Antonia Matic of Croatia, who turned 15 today, no longer displayed the earlier composure which was evident in the quarterfinal and semifinal matches against seeded opponents.

The pressure of playing her first final probably too much for her. Her opponent Urska was brimming with confidence. Fresh from her recent victory in the Lucknow leg of this circuit Urska won her second title with a 6-2, 6-0 victory. Urska deserved credit for slowing the pace considerably. Urska, nursing a sore ankle, won the event without dropping a single set and with one-sided scores.

She along with her twin sister Masa Vesenjka won the doubles title as well, beating Manisha Malhotra and Katarine Daskovic 6-3, 6-7 (2), 6-0.

Masa and Urska were cruising along to victory leading by one set and 5-2 when Manisha and Katarine rallied back to level the match at one all. The third set saw the Vesenjak sisters assert their dominance again and wrapped up the final set 6-0. The key to their success lay in their uncanny ability to each other’s mind and react as to team against anything that their opponent could throw.

The Punjab Government Lt Gen (Retd) JFR Jacob, gave away the prizes.

Arun Jaitley elected chief of DDCA

NEW DELHI, Dec 31 (PTI) — Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Arun Jaitley was today elected president of the Delhi and District Cricket Association after winning a high-voltage contest against former skipper Bishan Singh Bedi.

Jaitley, who became the star candidate of the dominant group at DDCA, made it a no contest as expected, polling 2389 votes to 143 gained by the former left arm spin wizard.

Former India opener and association patron Chetan Chauhan was elected and cricket board vice-president C K Khanna re-elected as DDCA vice-presidents polling 2314 and 2389 votes respectively, with former Test cricketer Maninder Singh coming a distant third with 228 votes in his favour.

Sunil Dev was re-elected sports secretary after another high profile, but woefully one-sided, contest with ex-Indian all-rounder Manoj Prabhakar. Former Test umpire Ram Babu Gupta, who was the outgoing president, was elected treasurer.

The DDCA officials have, for ages, come under fire for the way in which the association, interestingly registered as a private company, is run with the proxy considered the bane.

Bedi, like last year, had led a protest against the “obnoxious proxy voting” with several prominent cricketers rallying behind him. The former India skipper has said the manipulation on proxy by the present set of office-bearers was behind all the ills plaguing the DDCA, including lack of a permanent stadium and controversies over team selections.

SBOP beat PSEB

PATIALA, Dec 31 (FOSR) — State Bank of Patiala (SBOP) beat Punjab State Electricity Board (PSEB) by 20 runs to reach the final of the second Punjab State Inter-Institutional Cricket Tournament in the semifinal played at the Dhruv Pandove Stadium here today.

In the truncated match marred by bad weather and fog, PSEB won the toss but put SBOP in to bat.
