AMRITSAR
Function:
The Department of Microbiology of Guru Nanak Dev University, in association with the Society of Microbiologists, organised an event "Industry and New Microbiologists: Face-to-Face," at Guru Nanak Bhavan of the university to promote interaction between microbiologists and industry. Dr B.S Ghuman, Dean, Students Welfare, presided over it.

BATALA
Freedom fighter dead:
Freedom fighter Giani Charan Singh (90) who was also a former Sarpanch of Shankarpura village, 10 km from here, expired on Sunday. His funeral took place on Tuesday. Thousands of persons from nearby villages attended the funeral.
Girl traced: Mr Lok Nath Angra, chief of Batala police district, said here on Tuesday that Manjit Kaur (16), who was abducted on September 6 by Ranjit Singh, a resident of Kacha Kot, was traced on Monday from the main bus stand here by the police. A case under Sections 363 and 366, IPC, has been registered against Ranjit Singh.

BATHINDA
Literacy programme:
State Bank of Patiala, Maiserkhana, organised an adult literacy programme here in association with the Block Literacy Samiti, Maur Mandi. Mr Alok Shekhar, ADC (Development), who inaugurated it, said every literate person should try to make one more person as the literacy rate in this belt was only 37 per cent, the lowest as compared to other districts of Punjab.
Car theft: A car bearing registration number DAV 4042 was stolen on Wednesday, just 50 metres away from Maur Mandi police station. The thieves left another car on the spot , which was stolen from the Tej Ram Jarda lane in Mansa.

GARSHANKAR
Dowry death:
The police has registered a case against Ruldu Ram, his father and sister under Sections 394-B and 498, IPC, in connection with the death of Jasbir Kaur, wife of Ruldu Ram.
Theft:
A maid of a Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) member, Dr Jang Bahadur Singh, has allegedly stolen Rs 40,000 from his house. A case has been registered against her.
Tributes paid:
Leaders of all parties paid rich tributes to senior Congress leader Shiv Dayal Singh Chauhan on the occasion of his first death anniversary at Mehandwani.
Dharna:
Employees of the local Tubewell Corporation and that of Mahilpur and panchayat secretaries and employees of the Panchayat Samiti, Mahilpur, have been staging a dharna in protest against the non-payment of salaries for the past several days.
Salaries not paid:
Saini Bar College, Bullowal, Khalsa College, Garhdiwal, Khalsa College, Mahilpur and other private colleges here have not paid salaries to college teachers. Prof Vinod Vij, President of the district unit of the PCCTU asked the managements of the colleges to either pay salaries immediately or face in agitation.

HOSHIARPUR
Deplored:
The local Punjab Ayurvedic Medical Services Association has deplored the state Government's decision regarding the supervision of attendance of doctors and other staff members of ayurvedic and unani dispensaries in the state by gram panchayats. In a press note issued here on Tuesday, Dr Ashwani Kumar, General Secretary of the association stated that instead of degrading the status of doctors, the Punjab Government should strengthen the village dispensaries by providing buildings, accommodation for staff and of medicines.

LUDHIANA
Awarded:
Lion Kamalinder K. Singla, former District Governor of the Lions Club district 321-F, has been awarded the International President Award for his efforts to eradicate blindness and create awareness about eye donation.
Case registered:
The police has registered a case under Section 420 of the IPC against Shamsher Singh, a resident of Garha village, on a directive of the Deputy Commissioner. The suspect had cheated the Revenue Department by allegedly submitting a forged affidavit and getting land, measuring eight kanals, allotted in his name in 1980.

NAWANSHAHR
Arrested:
Mr R.P Meena, SSP, in a press note here on Tuesday said that the local police had arrested three thieves, Pooja, daughter of Kamal Kishore of Balachaur, Jasbir Ram, son of Mohanlal of Thandian village and Jaspal Singh, alias Neelu, son of Piara Singh of Bains village. The police recovered stolen goods, including a golden chain, a television set, two decks and two sewing machines from them.

PATIALA
Complaint:
Members of the Arjan Nagar Welfare Association have complained about difficulties faced by them due to deep trenches dug by the Department of Telecommunications for laying cables in their locality. In a complaint sent to the Public Grievances unit of the department, Dr H.S Jaggi, convener of the association, said although more than a month had passed since the department dug up five-feet-deep trenches along roadsides, it had neither laid down cables nor filled the trenches.

PHAGWARA
Arrested:
The police has arrested Bahadur Singh of Domeli village under Section 306, IPC, for abetment of suicide in connection with the death of a Dalit girl, Kamaljit, on Saturday. The girl had burnt herself to death by sprinkling kerosene over herself. Bahadur Singh had allegedly gone to her house last week and had teased her.

Painting competition:
In a national painting competition in the 13-16 age group, organised at the local Red Cross Bhavan, Taljeet Singh of the local DAV Public School stood first while Satwinder Kaur and Balwinder Singh , both from the local Netaji Model School, got the second and the third positions, respectively. In the 9-12 age group, Gurpreet Kaur and Harpreet Kaur, both from the local Netaji Model School and Amarjot Singh Deol from Government Primary School, Landran, got first , second and third positions, respectively. In the 5-8 age group, Debasis Ghosh from the local Netaji Model School, Jagjit Singh and Amandeep Singh Gill, both from the local Sahibzada Ajit Singh Academy, got the first, second and third positions, respectively, according to Mr V.P. Saini, Director of Netaji Model School here.
Flying squads:
To check evasion of the market fee, the rural development fee and other taxes at the time of paddy procurement by traders in the district and to assess the arrangements made by the government in the grain markets, five flying squads have been constituted under the supervision of Assistant Commissioner (Grievances), Assistant Commissioner (General), the DFSC, the AETC, and the District Mandi Officer.

Samagam: A special Gurmat samagam will be organised by the Sector 23 Shopkeepers Association on September 26 where Baba Sant Darbara Singh will recite shabad kirtan.

Elected: The following have been elected office-bearers of the local unit of the Punjab Draughtsmen Association: President — Mr Baldev Singh; Vice-President — Mr Ranbir Singh; General Secretary — Mr Kanwal Chand; and Treasurer — Ms savita Ahuja.

Inaugurated: A 10-day NSS camp at the Sector 26 Guru Gobind Singh College for women was inaugurated by Dr G.K. Bedi, a gynaecologist. Mr K.K. Monga, a social activist, presided. Earlier, the principal, Mrs Harjit Khanna, introduced the theme of the camp, ''Youth for healthy society". Raipur Kalan village has been adopted by the college NSS unit for overall development.top

YAMUNANAGAR
Ex-gratia scheme:
Under the ex-gratia scheme implemented through the Haryana State Agricultural Marketing Board to farmers and persons working in the agriculture sector, cheques for Rs 95,000 were distributed on Tuesday by Deputy Commissioner Rajiv Sharma on behalf of the local the market committee and market committee, Sadhaura. Mr Sharma said the state government was providing financial assistance to those who suffered an accident or died while doing agricultural work.
Competition:
A national group song and cultural competition was held on Wednesday at Saraswati Vidya Mandir, Jagadhri. It was organised by the Bharat Vikas Parishad. Sixteen teams from different schools of the area participated. It was presided over by the Deputy Speaker of the Haryana Vidhan Sabha, Mr Fakir Chand Aggarwal.
Highway blocked: An agitated mob blocked the Chhachhrauli-
Paonta Sahib highway for five hours on Monday due to a stubborn attitude of the truck operators union. According to information received here on Tuesday, the Chhachhrauli truck operators union used to extract money from tractor-trolley and truck owners. These owners alleged that a number of members of the union had beaten them up on a number of occasions which generated resentment among them and, therefore, they blocked the traffic. The SHO of Chhachhrauli police station intervened and pacified the crowd.

ROHTAK
Killed:
A Kenyan national studying law at Maharshi Dayanand University (MDU) was killed in a road accident here on Tuesday. According to police sources, the Kenyan student, identified as Kennedy, hailing from Nairobi, was killed after he was hit by an unknown speeding vehicle here when he was going for a morning walk on the local bypass road. The deceased had been residing at the local Kamal Colony.
One killed: One person was killed and eight were injured when a jeep collided with a truck near Jassia village on Thursday. In another incident, a cleaner of a Tata vehicle was crushed under his vehicle when a truck hit the vehicle near Ghilaur village on the Rohtak-Gohana road. The deceased has been identified as Vajir Singh of Sonepat.
