Rs 1 lakh looted from businessman

Sept 24 — A youth snatched more than Rs 1 lakh from a local businessman in the city late tonight.

According to Mr Hardayal Singh, proprietor of Rattan Enterprises, Sector 26, he was going to his home after closing the shop at about 8.30 p.m. and was near the Jat Bhavan on Madhya Marg when two youths on a motor cycle signalled him to stop, saying that the rear tyre of the car was punctured.

Unsuspecting, he stopped the car, got down and examined the tyre which was not punctured but had less air. One of the youths then offered to help him which he accepted.

While he was opening the boot of the car, the youth suddenly got into the car, took out a bag containing more than Rs 1 lakh, the entire proceeds of the day, his wallet and ran towards his accomplice who was waiting on the motor cycle. They later sped away.

A case has been registered at the Sector 26 police station.

Two arrested
The police has arrested two Panchkula residents for assaulting a women in Sector 28.

According to police sources, Ms Sunita Jagwal reported that she was assaulted by Dinesh Kumar, P.D. Gautam, Parkash Kaur, Poonam, Gurdial Singh and an unidentified man who were in a car (CHOI-E-0118).

Dinesh Kumar and P.D. Gautam have been arrested.

A case under Sections 147, 148, 149, 323, 427 and 506 of the IPC has been registered at the Sector 34 police station.

Assaulted
Mr Chiranji Lal, a cyclist and resident of Ram Darbar, reported to the police that Chattar Pal and his sons, who were on a tractor, hit him near the Sector 29 and 30 roundabout and also assaulted him when he protested.

All the accused have been arrested and a case under Sections 279, 337, 440, 323 and 34 of the IPC has been registered at the Industrial Area police station.

Girl injured
Mrs Manjit Kaur, a resident of Milk Colony, Dhanas, reported to the police that Sumit Mahajan, a scooterist, hit her 10-year-old daughter and injured her. A case under Sections 279 and 338, IPC, has been registered.

12 held
As many as 12 persons have been arrested for committing various offences in the city.

Tulsi Ram , a resident of Bapu Dham Colony, has been arrested for carrying six bottles of whisky.

Six persons have been arrested under preventive action.

Four persons have been arrested for roaming about under suspicious circumstances. One person has been arrested for creating nuisance while under the influence of liquor.

Rash driving
Two cases of rash and negligent driving were registered by the police and a man was arrested for creating nuisance at a public place in Sector 4, here today.

A person called Gurbax Singh has complained to the police that the driver of a Maruti car (CH-01-K-1938) hit a cyclist and injured him. A case under Sections 279 and 337 of the IPC has been registered against the driver.

Balwinder Singh, driver of truck (HYN-1596) hit into the police barricade at Zirakpur. A case under Sections 279 and 336 of the IPC has been registered against him. He was arrested and his truck was impounded. Gurdas Singh, a resident of Saket Hospital, was booked under the Excise Act for consuming liquor and creating nuisance at a public place.

'Arhar' costlier, 'rajmah' cheaper

CHANDIGARH, Sept 24 — ''Arhar'' become costlier, while the price of ''rajmah'' came down in the local market during the past fortnight.

During a survey of the market, it was found that if a kg of ''arhar'' was priced at Rs 32 in retail and Rs 28 in the wholesale market two weeks ago, it was available today at Rs 36 and Rs 32, respectively.

The price of ''dal chana'' increased. A kg of the pulse, priced at Rs 18 a kg in the retail market two weeks ago, could be had at Rs 20. Its wholesale price increased from Rs 15.50 to Rs 18 a kg.

On the other hand, the price of ''rajmah'' dipped a bit during the period. A kg of the commodity, which was priced Rs 36 about two weeks back, could be purchased at Rs 34. In the wholesale market its price came down from Rs 32 to Rs 30 a kg.

The price of ''dal masri'' increased during this period. A kg of the commodity, priced at Rs 26 in the retail market, could be purchased at Rs 28. The wholesale market witnessed the price of the commodity going up from Rs 23 to Rs 26 a kg.

There was no change in the price of ''moong chilika'' and ''moong dhuli'' as each of these could be had at Rs 24 a kg in wholesale and Rs 26 in the retail market. ''Moong dal'', however, become costlier as its price increased from Rs 28 to Rs 32 a kg in retail and Rs 26 to Rs 28 in the wholesale market. Similarly, the price of ''mah sabat'' increased from Rs 28 to Rs 30 a kg in retail and Rs 24 to Rs 26 in the wholesale market. ''Mah chilka'' and ''dal mah'' could be purchased at Rs 31 a kg as there was no change in their prices.

Similarly, there was no change in the price of soyabean and ''roungi'' as these could be had at Rs 36 and Rs 34 a kg, respectively. White ''chana'' could be had at Rs 34 a kg in the retail market and ''malaka masar'' was priced at Rs 28 a kg in retail and Rs 26 in the wholesale market.Back

CHANDIGARH, Sept 24 — Sanjay Public School, Sector 44, crushed Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 19, 5-0, on the second day of the Chandigarh Junior Football League Championship being played here at Football Stadium in Sector 17, today.

In the other match of the day, OCF, Sector 29, team defeated Shishu Niketan School, Sector 22, 4-0.

In an interesting match of the day, DAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 8, defeated New Public School, Sector 18, 6-2.

In the last match of the day, St Xavier's School, Sector 44, defeated Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 20, 4-0.

The quarterfinals line-up is as follows: SD Public School, Sector 32, versus Jawahar Navodyalya, Sector 25; Sanjay Public School (A), Sector 44, versus OCF-29; DAV Public School, Sector 8, versus St Xavier's School, Sector 44; and Sanjay Public School, Sector 44 (B) against Liberty Club.

School cricket

A fine performance by Sarabjot who scored 37 runs and took three wickets for 29 runs went in vain as Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 32, lost to Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 23, by five wickets in the Chandigarh Schools Cricket Tournament for the Shivalik Trophy being played here at Cricket Stadium in Sector 16 today.

Brief scores: GMSSS-32 — 104 all out (Sarabjot 37, Gurjeet 4 for 16, Sanjay 2 for 17, Gagan 2 for 19); GMSSS-23 — 107 for five wickets (Rupinder 22, Kartik 15, Sarabjot 3 for 29).

City triathlon

The VIth Chandigarh State Triathlon Championship for boys and girls in seniors, under-18, and sub-juniors (under-14) sections, will be held on October 9 at swimming pool of Lake Club, according to a press note of the Chandigarh State Triathlon Association.

Entries close with Mr M.S. Dalal, Joint Secretary of the CSTA, at the PU swimming pool till October 7. Triathletes selected on the basis of this championship will take part in the National Sub-Junior and Junior Triathlon Championship to be held at Cochin in Kerala on October 30 and 31.Back
