Chopra, Dravid star in India’s win

TORONTO, Sept 15 (Reuters) — India defeated the West Indies by 88 runs in the third match of the inaugural DMC Cup played at the Toronto Cricket Skating and Curling Club.

With that win — India made 225-7 in its 50 overs while West Indies were all out for 137 after 34.2 overs — India won the series in the Toronto festival of cricket 2-1.

India also took home the winner’s trophy of $ 20,000 plus the man of the series award presented to captain Saurav Ganguly.

Set a reasonable target of 226 — or 4.52 runs an over — on a fast outfield and on a pitch that played very true and offered the bowlers little bounce, the West Indies were in immediate trouble: on the first ball of their innings at Debashis Mohanty cleaned bowled opening batsman Sherwin Campbell.

Mohanty, who was given the new ball in preference to Venkatesh Prasad, broke through Campbell’s defence and had his middle stump knocked over.

India were then on the offensive and its aggressiveness paid off.

Prasad also achieved a breakthrough in his first over when he had opening batsman Ridley Jacobs, caught low down at second slip by Rahul Dravid, the first of four slip catches to the Man of the Match.

Earlier Dravid made a fine 77 off 87 balls.

Wickets continued to tumble and after Christopher Gayle — a newcomer to the West Indies team — and Shivnarine Chanderpaul were out at the same score, 20. The West Indies were 20-4 after 9.2 overs.

Captain Brian Lara and Jimmy Adams advanced the score to 52 before right arm off spinner Nikhil Chopra struck. The spinner took three wickets in the space of three overs — Adams was caught at slip for 3, Lara, who earlier had hit 3 boundaries in successive balls off Mohanty, also was caught at slip for 26 off 37 balls while Dillon was bowled first ball.

India started badly — they were 24-2 after 10 overs — and built their innings around three partnerships: 37 between Ganguly and Martin, 59 between Martin and Dravid and 77 between Dravid and Vinod Kambli.

And the batsmen became more aggressive as the innings progressed: the first 50 runs came in 110 balls, the second 50 in 59 balls, the third 50 in 90 balls and the final 50 in 36 balls.

Sachin not available for Nairobi

MUMBAI, Sept 15 (PTI) — Sachin Tendulkar today officially informed the BCCI that he needed three or four weeks’ time to fully recover from his lower spine injury and was not available for the four-nation one-day tournament to be held at Nairobi from September 25 to October 3.

BCCI chief Raj Singh Dungarpur told PTI that the Indian skipper informed him from Adelaide that he was confident of overcoming his back problem and returning to full fitness after consulting specialists at the Australian Cricket Academy.

“He sounded very relaxed when I spoke to him. He said he needed three to four weeks to become fully fit. Obviously that rules him out of the Kenya tournament,” Dungarpur said.

“Sachin intends to stay at the academy for a couple of days more and then leave for Sydney to consult another specialist before returning home. He said he had already started following the exercises prescribed by the Australian doctors. Ajit Agarkar too has been shown some exercises,” the board president said.

Paceman Agarkar accompanied Tendulkar to Adelaide and received treatment for the hamstring injury he sustained at Chennai during the team’s conditioning camp late last month which forced him to miss India’s first three engagements after the World Cup.

The Indian squad for the Nairobi event is to be selected at Baroda on September 17. Tendulkar’s deputy, Ajay Jadeja, is expected to be named captain if he reports fit from the calf muscle tear suffered at Singapore during the September 2 to 8 tri-nation event held there.

Tendulkar did not accompany the team to Toronto for the three-match cricket festival series against the West Indies which India won 2-1 yesterday under stand-in skipper Saurav Ganguly — to attend urgently to his back problem which flared up again during the three-nation event in Sri Lanka last month-end.

He flew to Adelaide a couple of days after returning home from Singapore. He has been told by the Australian doctors that he had defects in his lower vertebrae and scar tissue had formed occasionally became inflamed and caused his back pain which has dogged him since the Test series at home against Pakistan in January this year.

Mr Dungarpur said he was very relieved to learn that the Maestro did not have to undergo surgery for his back problem.

Tendulkar is expected to be fit in time for the three-Test home series against New Zealand. The Kiwis are landing in Mumbai on September 28. The first Test is scheduled at Mohali from October 10 to 14.

Jadeja also had to miss the Toronto series because of the calf muscle injury, but is expected to be fit for Nairobi.

Agarkar, too, is expected to miss the Kenya event as he is expected to be fit to play only after a month.

HYDERABAD, Sept 15 (PTI) — The injured Indian wicket-keeper Nayan Mongia has forwarded his fitness certificate to the cricket board.

“I spoke to J.Y. Lele, Secretary, BCCI, this evening and informed him about the fitness certificate, testifying that my injured wrist is fully recovered and am fit to play in first class cricket,” Mongia yesterday told PTI here.

“I even spoke to my doctor, who instead of doing regular physical fitness for my injured wrist at home, asked me to play a tournament and only on his advice I am here (Hyderabad) to take part in the Moin-ud-Dowla cricket tournament,” he said.

Medvedev, Moya lose in 1st round

BOURNEMOUTH, (England), Sept 15 (Reuters) — Andrei Medvedev, who played one of the greatest finals of all-times when he lost to Andre Agassi at the French Open, yesterday sunk deeper into the depression which has afflicted him in the three months since then.

The fourth-seeded Ukrainian was beaten in the first round of the Bournemouth Open by an old adversary, Magnus Gustafsson, the Swede who overcame him in the final at Basaad last year.

Medvedev this time lost 6-2, 7-6, which means that he has won only two matches in four clay court tournaments since Paris.

The former world No. 4, at 34 in the rankings, looks increasingly unlikely to make the long-term revival he spoke of in June.

Medvedev led 5-2 in the second set and 5-3 in the tie-break, only to flounder against his opponent’s huge forehands and his own temperamental frailties.

He was awarded a code violation warning for hitting a ball out of the stadium just before the end.

Another seed, defending champion Felix Mantilla, also went out.

The top 20-ranked Spaniard won the first two games and then unaccountably lost nine on the trot to go down 6-2, 6-3 to Kenneth Carlsen, a Dane not known for his clay court prowess and who is ranked in the world.

“I have no explanation. I felt like I couldn’t do anything. It’s very bad to lose like that,” admitted Mantilla, who had been looking for a hat-trick of titles in Bournemouth.

“I hope I can come back and win again next year.”

Carlsen was delighted. “This was very nice for me,’’ he said. “I think I played a smart game. I kept a lot of balls low with slice and then mixed it up with some high balls too.”

Top seed, Thomas Enqvist progressed 7-5, 6-1 against Swedish compatriot Nicklas Kulti, godfather to his child. “It’s always difficult to play your best friend. We both found it difficult to get pumped up,’’ said Enqvist.

PALMA DE MALLORCA: Top seed Carlos Moya crashed out of the Mallorca Open in a late first-round match on Tuesday, losing 6-4, 3-6, 3-6 to Juan Ballcell.

Moya, the local hero and runner-up last year, was suffering from a back injury as he faded quickly after a bright start and was finished off his unheralded fellow Spaniard.

In another surprise at Mallorca’s converted bullring, third seed Albert Costa fell to Bulgarian Orlin Stanoytchev 6-3, 6-7, 6-3.

Maurice Greene eases to victory
in 100 m

TOKYO, Sept 15 (AFP) — Maurice Greene, the fastest man in the world, brought down the curtain on his record-breaking season with an easy victory in the men’s 100m at the Tokyo Grand prix here today.

The Kansas Comet, who smashed the 100m world record in Athens in June with a mark of 9.79 seconds, clocked 10.35 despite a 2.9 m/s headwind.

Fellow American Curtis Johnson timed 10.40, followed by China’s Yin Hanzhao in 10.56. Asian sprint record holder Koji Ito of Japan ended in a disappointing fifth in 10.69.

“The race was very tough,” said Greene, (25).

“The reason why it was tough was because the wind was blowing so hard. I believe without the wind I could have run a lot faster, but I’m happy that I’m still healthy and I have no injuries.”

Greene, who won the world indoor 60m title in Maebashi in March, stripped his Canadian arch-rival Donovan Bailey of the world 100m record, and retained his 100m world title in Seville last month.

He added the 200m title to become the first man to achieve the sprint double in the World Championships — he also took 4x100m gold as well.

Greene has said he can improve on his world record but he said his main target for next season would be gold at the Sydney Olympic Games.

Greene’s stablemate Larry Wade also ended his season on a high note, edging out world champion Colin Jackson to claim victory in the 110 metres hurdles.

The 24-year-old, who missed out on a place in the World Championships after suffering cramp in the US trials, came home in 13.50 seconds.

Jackson, who is also the world record holder, clocked 13.55. Japan’s Satoru Tanigawa was third in 13.95 and Asian Games champion Chen Yanhao of China fourth in 14.01.

The 32-year-old Welshman, whose season also included victory in the world indoor 60m hurdles in March, said he was delighted with his season.

Wade, (24), claimed the win had given him a psychological edge over his British rival.

Driss Maazouzi of France won the men’s 1,500m in 3:46.54, beating Japan’s Kazuyoshi Tokumoto and Alistair Stevenson of Australia, while Japan’s Kazuhiko Yamazaki defeated American Joey Woody to win the 400m hurdles in 48.98.

Takahisa Yoshida of Japan won the high jump with a clearance of 2.24m. Lee Jin-Taek of South Korea, sixth in Seville, matched that height but had to settle for second place having taking more attempts.

Japanese-based Kenyan James Wainaina clocked 13:56.88 to lead a Kenyan 1-2 finish with Kagika Laban in the men’s 5,000m, while American Kelly Suttle jumped 4.20m for an easy win in the women’s pole vault after world record holder Emmer George of Australia withdrew.

In the women’s sprint races, Bulgaria’s Petya Pendareva made it a double victory, beating Susanthika Jayasinghe of Sri Lanka to win the 100m in 11.36, and Japan’s Motoka Arai to win the 200m in 23.27.

Chima Okerie fined Rs 3 lakh

CALCUTTA, Sept 14 (PTI) — The Indian Football Association yesterday suspended star Mohun Bagan striker Chima Okerie till April 30 next year and imposed a fine of Rs 3 lakh for manhandling the referee during the super division league match against arch rivals East Bengal on August 31.

Okerie has been asked to pay the fine of Rs 3 lakh by April 30 or face a further two-year suspension, IFA joint-secretary Ranjit Gupta said.

The decision to suspend and fine the star striker was taken by the super division league subcommittee which met yesterday amidst growing pressure on the IFA to take disciplinary action on the player.

Three other Mohun Bagan players — Samuel Omollo, Debjit Ghosh and Dulal Biswas — who were also named in the referee and match commissioner’s report on the violence-marred match have been fined Rs 10,000 each.

The three players have been asked to pay the fine before September 30 failing which they would be suspended from October 1 to 30, Mr Gupta said.

The four Mohun Bagan players had deposed before the super division league subcommittee giving their views on the controversial match which ended in a 1-1 draw after East Bengal were awarded a penalty in the dying minutes of the contest.

The committee yesterday summoned the assistant referee of the match and heard his views before finalising the disciplinary action on the players.

Tough going for favourites

CHENNAI, Sept 15 (PTI) — On a day when the favourites found the going tough, Chandigarh’s Harinder Singh Kang put a strong grip to take the leader position with a one-under-par 71 in the first round of A.V. Thomas Gold Cup Amateur Golf Championship here today.

The favourites, Delhi’s Ashok Kumar, winner of the season’s opener — Karnataka Open last week, Mysore’s Raghul Ganapathy, top most amateur in the order of merit, Shiraz Kalra of Lucknow have all ended up way behind with scores of three and four over par 72 course.

Local amateur K.V. Balachander was a cut above the rest with a two over par 72.

Heavy cross wind deterred the spirits of other golfers but Kang, who started off with a double bogey on the very first hole, played with total determination and concentration to par the next four holes, before achieving a brace of birdies on the 6th and 7th.

He dropped a stroke on the ninth for an one over 37 at the halfway mark. Kang was two over at the end of the 12th whole but his three biridies — 15th, 16th and 18th — helped him to finish at one under 71.

Delhi’s Anitya Chand and Calcutta’s Rahil Ganjee were lying joint second to Kang with an identical par 72 scores.

The team championship was evenly poised with the top three lying close to each other. Defending champions, Noida Golf Club Simarjeet Singh and Jasjeet Singh) were at the third spot with 152, behind Karnataka Golf Association, (151) and Godawari (149).
