AMRITSAR
Training course:
A one-year radio and TV training course will be started by the Department of Adult and Continuing Education and Guru Nanak Dev University extension here for unemployed youth having Plus 2 qualification from, October this year. According to Mrs Satnam Kaur Sekhon, Assistant Director of the department, applications can be submitted before September 24, at the Dashmesh Auditorium on the university campus here.

Inaugurated: Group Commander Col A.K. Bawa inaugurated the NCC office at Government Senior Secondary School, Kohali, the native village of former Air Chief Marshal Arjun Singh. The Commanding Officer, Wing Commander Sher Singh, was also present. Colonel Bawa also inspected the NCC Air Wing troupe.

FEROZEPORE
Raid:
The Superintendent of Police (Vigilance), Ferozepore Range, Mr Hardial Singh Mann, said a raid was conducted at the drug store in Fazilka Civil Hospital on Saturday.

GARHSHANKAR
Arrested :
A married man, Jaswinder Singh was arrested by the local police when he was going to Saila Khurd village to marry again. The arrest was made following a tipoff by his first wife. The "groom" war accompanied by his relatives. The SHO Garhshankar, Mr Ajay Singh, arrested the "groom", his father Amrik Singh and another person Jasvir Singh Mann.

HOSHIARPUR
Rally:
Members of the Punjab State Tubewell Corporation here staged a rally in front of their office here on Tuesday in protest against the proposed auction of 127 tubewells of the corporation and for the non-payment of salaries for August.

Elected:
The following have been elected office-bearers of the PSEB Scheduled Castes Engineers and Power Officers Association President — Mr D.K. Kaler; Senior Vice-President — Mr R.C. MOGA
Road repair:
Commuters from various places today urged the state government to direct the PWD Department to repair the Moga-Ludhiana and Moga-Kotkapura roads in the region as deteriorating condition of the roads was causing lot of inconvenience to one and all.
Cops' demand: Staff of Baghapurana police station in this district urged the state government on Tuesday to make immediate and proper arrangements for the repairs of the old residential quarters of police personnel within the premises of the police station or to build new residential quarters for them. They said the 80-year-old quarters were now in dilapidated conditions.

PATIALA
Award:
The Dr Ravi Memorial Trust has decided to confer the Dr Ravi award for the year 1998-99 to Mr Gurdial Singh, a noted Punjabi novelist on September 26 at Bhasha Bhavan here. Dr Harcharan Singh, General Secretary of the trust said in a press note here on Tuesday that Dr Namvar Singh, President of the Progressive Writers Association, would be the chief guest on the occasion and a kavi-darbar would also be organised.
Lions Club: The following have been elected office-bearers of the Lions Club, Patiala (Sheesh Mahal): President — Mr Parveen Sharma; Vice-Presidents — Dr R.M.S. Bajwa and Mrs Veena Sharma; Secretary — Mr Ashok Kumar; P.R.O. — Mr T.N. Sharma; and Treasurer — Mr Vimal Kumar.
Hindi fortnight:
A "Hindi fortnight" will be organised soon by the Diesel Component Works here for its employees. According to an official press note a Hindi workshop, on-the-spot essay writing, Hindi stenography, memory and antakshri competitions would be organised during the fortnight. Besides this a Hindi dictation workshop and technical seminar will also be organised during the fortnight.

The following have been elected office-bearers of the district unit of the Punjab Water Supply and Sewerage Board — Chairman — Mr Nirmaljit Singh Bajwa; President — Mr Vinay Sharma; Secretary — Mr Sumit Kakkar; and Treasurer — Mrs Suman Lata.
Dispensary:
A free consultation dispensary has been opened by the academy of Sikh Religion and Culture, Dhillon Marg in Model Town, here. Mr K.P. Singh Mann, Registrar of the academy, said a multi-speciality free medical camp was also organised.
Teachers honoured:
The Lions Club (Baradari) has honoured five distinguished teachers at a function organised at Government Senior Secondary School, Pheelkhana. Mr Mohan Lal Chug, Deputy Cabinet Secretary, Lions Club International, 321-F, said the "Shresht Acharya" award was presented to Mrs Nirmal Kaul, Mr Tarlochan Singh Mahajan, Mr Parminder Singh, Mr Narinder Kumar and Mrs Manjit Kaur. Dr Kehar Singh, Chairman of the Punjab School Education Board presented the awards.

Chat show:
The city Junior Chamber (Jaycees) organised a chat show on topic of communication gap’ and generation gap on Tuesday. Earlier, a free medical check-up camp was held by the chamber and 418 patients were examined by specialists.

Poisoned:
A resident of nearby Rasulpur village has allegedly poisoned her husband and two-year-old son. The police has registered a case under Section 174 Cr PC on the basis of a complaint lodged by Mrs Joginder Kaur, mother of the deceased. The police has sent the viscera of the deceased for chemical examination.

Membership drive: The local unit of the SAD has launched a drive to enrol new members for the party. A press note issued here on Wednesday urged the party President, Mr Parkash Singh Badal, to appoint an observer so that a democratic party set-up could be established in the city.
Elected: The following have been elected the office-bearers of the CHB Flats Residents Welfare Association, Sector 55: Chairman —Mr B.R. Rangara; President — Mr Gurcharan Singh Thakur; and General Secretary — Mr Harminder Singh Aulakh.
Refrigerator donated: Members of the Chandigarh branch of the CPWD Junior Engineer Association on Wednesday celebrated their Engineers' Day by donating a 300-litre-capacity refrigerator to Old Age Home, Sector 15. Engineers celebrate this day in the memory of Sir V. Visvesvarya, an engineer who was awarded the Bharat Ratna. They also gave fruits to inmates of the home and spent some time with them.
Blood donation: The State Bank of India on Wednesday organised blood donation camps at its Medical Institute Branch in Chandigarh and Staff Training Centre (STC) in Panchkula. Mr R.C. Agrawala, General Manager of the State Bank of India, Chandigarh Circle, inaugurated the camps. In the camp organised by the Institute in collaboration with DAV College, Sector 10, about 320 persons donated blood. About 30 persons donated blood at the STC camp.
AIDS symposium: A two-day national symposium on AIDS-Update will be organised in October by the Department of Immunopathology of the PGI which will focus on current researches being carried out on HIV/AIDS.

Appointed:
Mr Jitendar Dalal has been appointed the President of the district unit of the Shiv Sena at a meeting held under the chairmanship of Mr Jai Parkash Jangra, Senior Vice-President of the state unit, recently.
Literacy Day: To mark the International Literacy Day, the Shramik Vidyapeeth, Chandigarh, organised awareness camps during the week from September 8 to 15, in collaboration with the AIDS Control Cell of the Health Department of the UT, at Mauli Jagran Colony, Shiv Mandir, Sector 39, Maloya Colony, Old NAC Office Building, Mani Majra, Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 46, and Colony No. 4 in Industrial Area, Chandigarh.

AMBALA
Dharna:
Members of the Netraheen Jagriti Sangh have started a dharna in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office to protest against the failure of the police to trace the Sangh President Sanjay Lamba, who has been missing since July 19. The General Secretary of the Sangh, Mr Jagjit Saini, said the dharna would continue till Mr Lamba was traced. Deputy Commissioner Navraj Sandhu said the police was trying to trace Mr Lamba. She said five persons suspected to be involved in the case had been arrested already.

KURUKSHETRA
Polio eradication:
A one-day North India inter-state workshop on polio eradication was organised by the local Rotary Club here on Monday. At least 300 representatives of Rotary Clubs in Haryana, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Chandigarh participated in the workshop.
Saini sabha:
The following were elected members of the Saini Sabha here on Monday: President — Mr Gurdyal Singh Saini; Senior Vice-President-Mr Kartar Singh Saini; Vice-President. Mr Krishan Chand Saini; Secretary Mr Rajender Kumar Saini; and Treasurer — Dr Nirmal Singh Saini.

SIRSA
Found dead:
Gian Singh (32), a prisoner, was found dead in the district jail here on Tuesday. He was in jail since August 16, 1996, after he was convicted for the murder of his brother and was sentenced to life imprisonment. The body was cremated after post-mortem.

SONEPAT
Absconders held:
The Kharkhauda police arrested two criminals who were evading arrest, on Tuesday. One of the culprits was identified as Rohtas. The had been absconding since October 9, 1992. He was wanted in a case of theft. The other person, identified as Ashok was wanted in a case of looting. He had been absconding since October 12, last year.
Seminar:
The Shaheed Yaadgaar Sangthan organised a seminar in connection with the shaheedi day of veteran freedom fighter Yatinder Nath Dass on Dayanand Senior Secondary School campus here on Tuesday. The speakers, including Mr Raghbir Dahiya and Mr Chhattar Singh, recalled the sacrifices made by the freedom fighters and called upon the people not to forget their sacrifices.
