Moscow blast toll 121
MOSCOW, Sept 14 (PTI) — Russia today tightened security here and in other major cities as the toll in yesterday’s apartment building blast rose to 121. Thanks to the vigilance of the residents yesterday the police recovered 38 gunny bags containing almost 2 tons of highly explosive materials, from the basement of a high-rise apartment building in south-west Moscow.

Hindi conference
LONDON, Sept 14 (PTI) — The sixth World Hindi Conference was inaugurated here this evening at Wembley Conference Hall by Minister of State for External Affairs Vasundhara Raje to coincide with the golden jubilee of declaration of Hindi as the official language of the country.

Bangladesh strike
DHAKA, Sept 14 (DPA) — Street violence shook the Bangladesh capital Dhaka overnight today, raising the death toll to three and leaving some 100 people injured on the second day of a general strike. The main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and its allies were protesting an alleged move by the authorities to give overland transit rights to India.

No violation: UP
LUCKNOW, Sept 14 (PTI) — The Uttar Pradesh Government has submitted its report saying there was no misuse of official vehicles in Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee's motorcade during filing of his nomination to the Election Commission, state Chief Secretary Yogendra Narain said today. The Congress and Samajwadi Party had alleged that Mr Vajpayee's motorcade misused official machinery.

Soldiers' bodies
COLOMBO, Sept 14 (Reuters) — Sri Lanka's Tamil Tiger rebels today handed over the bodies of 15 soldiers killed in fierce fighting over the weekend in the country's north to the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), officials said. There was no immediate comment from the Army.

Bihar floods
PATNA, Sept 14 (UNI) — The flood situation in Bihar remained grim today with major rivers still in spate even as the toll in the natural calamity rose to 285. At least 11 people were drowned in four separate boat tragedies at Darbhanga, Khagaria and Begusarai districts during the past 24 hours.
