BATHINDA
Bribe case:
Mr Sat Pal Singh Sidhu, SP (Vigilance), said in a press note issued on Wednesday that Mr Surinderpal Kataria, Senior Field Officer, Primary Agriculture Development Bank (PADB), Nathana, was caught red-handed by a vigilance team led by Mr Vinod Kumar, DSP, on August 31 while accepting a bribe of Rs 1,000 from Mr Sukhminder Singh of Lehra Bega village.

JALANDHAR
Man crushed:
A 30-year-old man has been reportedly crushed to death by a truck near the local Nakodar chowk while a 50-year-old man's body has been found on a railway track at Dhogri near Suchi Pind here, the police said. The victims have not been identified.

KAPURTHALA
Lions Club:
The following have been elected officer-bearers of the local Lions Club (Service): President — Mr Dhiman Paul Grover; Vice-President — Mr D.K. Sharma; Secretary — Mr Anil Dhir and Treasurer — Mr Kuldeep Singh.

Orders issued: Mr V.K. Singh, District Magistrate, on Thursday issued orders directing owners of guest houses, hotels and dharamshalas in the district to furnish information regarding the persons staying there to SHOs of police stations concerned and a copy to the District Magistrate. The orders will remain in force till September 30.

Appointed: Mr Bhupinder Singh Walia has been appointed President of the local unit of the Sarb Hind Shrimani Akali Dal, according to a press note.

PATIALA
Principal honoured:
The Lions Club (Patiala Central) honoured Ms Charanjit Kaur, Principal, Government Girls Senior Secondary School, Model Town, on the occasion of Teacher's Day. Mr Paramjit Kohli, District Governor, Lions International District, 321-F, presented a shawl and a citation to the awardee.

Office-bearers: The following have been elected office-bearers of the Ekta Vihar Welfare Council: President - Mr R.D Rajanpal; Vice-President - Mr Mewa Singh; General Secretary - Mr Jaswant Rai; Joint Secretary - Mr Darbara Singh; and Treasurer - Mr Shiam Lal Verma.

PHAGWARA
4 killed:
Four persons were killed in two separate accidents near here on Wednesday. Two migrant labourers, Mohan Lal and Vidya Ram, were killed on the spot when they were hit by a Tata Sumo while crossing the road near Goraya. Gurmaij Singh and Harbans Lal of Bilga village were killed when their scooter was hit by a tractor near Talhan village on the Phillaur-Bilga road. A case has been registered.

SAMRALA
Cremation ground:
There is no cremation ground for the backward classes at Sultanpur village (near Ropalon), according to a chowkidar, Mr Gurdev Singh. He said about 70 families in the village were forced to cremate bodies at a slaughter house compound. He urged the SDM, Mr Baldev Singh, to allot a cremation ground.

Tourism function: The executive committee of the Tourism Promotion Society of Chandigarh, which met here on Wednesday under the chairmanship of Mr Manmohan Singh, finalised the programme to celebrate World Tourism Day on September 27. The committee drew up a plan to celebrate the day by organising a panel discussion on tourism with participation of students from the hospitality institutes.

Action plan: As many as 12 women organisations held a meeting at the Young Women's Christian Association to chalk out an action plan for global women's march from March to October, 2000, here on Thursday. A press release said the main thrust would be on two vital issues — violence against women and elimination of poverty. The walk would commence on March 8, 2000. The next meeting to discuss the agenda was scheduled for October 5, the release added.

Muddy water: Mr Rajinder Singh, a resident of Ward 9 of Lambi Gali in Kharar, near here, has alleged that he had been receiving muddy water for the past one week during the morning supply hours. Mr Rajinder Singh brought a bottle of water mixed with sand-like particles to The Tribune office on Thursday.

KHARAR
Liquor sale: A deputation of Tira village, near here, led by its Sarpanch, Mr Jagjivan Lal met Punjab Chief Minister, Parkash Singh Badal on Thursday and gave him a memorandum that alleged that illegal sale of liquor was going on in the village on the Tira-Togan road and a government employee of the village was responsible for this. The delegation said the social atmosphere of the village had been badly affected due to this. It demanded that the Administration should be asked to take action in this regard.

Stolen:
Electronic goods, including seven colour TV sets, were reportedly stolen from a shop on Tuesday. A case has been registered.

Inaugurated: Lieut-Gen G.S. Sihota, GOC, 2 Corps, inaugurated the Kharga Sports Complex on Tuesday at Ambala Cantonment. The complex would provide various sports facilities, including swimming.

SIRSA
Criticised:
Swaran Singh Virk, advocate and senior leader of the CPI, has criticised the "indiscriminating attitude" of senior officers of the Telecommunication Department. He alleged that the telephone exchange of Kariwala village had been out of order for the past four months and repeated complaints in this regard had been ignored.

SONEPAT
Venue changed:
Mr Harish Chander Jain, SDM and Estate Officer, HUDA, on Wednesday changed the venue of the draw of plots in Sectors 15 to 16, to be held on Thursday, from the HUDA office to the Community Centre Sector 14, here in view of the continuous rain in the region.

Power thefts: The Himachal Power Engineers Association has expressed concern over the losses being faced by the state due to power thefts. At a meeting held here on Wednesday, the association said the power thefts had increased because officers of the HPSEB were not vested with powers to issue challans to those found guilty.top
