Consumer Courts
Institute ordered to pay compensation
Tribune News Service

PANCHKULA, Sept 8 — The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum has ordered the Indian Institute of Management and Computers, Industrial area, Phase II, Panchkula, to refund Rs 15,000 with 18 per cent per annum interest, Rs 5000 on account of compensation and Rs 1000 as costs of proceedings to Preetinder Singh Brar, a resident of Sector 32.

The decision came after Mr PS Brar filed a complaint that he had applied to the institute, which claimed to be an authorised centre under the Madurai Kamraj University, for admission to the MCA course. The complainant deposited Rs 15,000 as admission fee and was assured that this would be refunded if he was not admitted through the entrance test.

Mr Brar alleged that after receiving the amount he was neither informed of the date of the entrance test nor admitted to the regular course. Following this, he approached the university concerned where he was informed that the said institute was not an authorised centre after which he demanded a refund of the deposited amount and issued reminders to the same.

It was argued that since the institute is falsely representing the Madurai Kamraj University for MCA regular course, it was indulging in "unfair trade practice''. Further, this had caused mental torture and physical harassment to the complainant who had lost one year of his academic qualification due to deficiency of service and unfair trade practice on part of the institute.

The forum has said that the order be complied within a period of one month from the date of communication of the order.Back
