Elected:
The following have been elected office bearers of the Municipal Council Pensioners Karamchari Union: President — Mr Amarjit Singh Sethi; Vice-President — Mr Harjit Singh; General Secretary — Mr Ravinder Rai, and Cashier — Mr Kishori Lal Sharma.

SBI officers' union: The following have been elected office-bearers of the State Bank of India Officers Association: President — Mr Chaman Lal, Secretary — Mr Harbhinder Singh, and Treasurer — Mr R.L. Vashisht.

MOGA
Encroachments removed:
The Baghapurana administration demolished about 100 stalls and platforms built in front of shops and other encroachments on Friday. The shopkeepers had been served with notices in this regard.

PATIALA
Office-bearers:
At a meeting of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (Patalia unit), the following were elected to the executive body: (Patiala city) — President — Dr Ashok Kumar; Vice-Presidents - Dr Shant Vashisht, Mr Rajbinder Singh and Mr Vishal Goel; Secretary — Mr Taran Kumar; (Punjabi University Campus) — President — Mr Sandeep Kapoor; Vice-Presidents — Arvind and Vishal.

Teachers' strike: Teachers of Guru Kashi College, Talwandi Sabo, in Bhatinda district, have decided to observe a strike on November 3, in protest against the apathetic attitude of Punjabi University management on the implementation of their revised pay scales. Dr D.K. Madaan, Press Secretary, Punjab and Chandigarh College Teachers Union, said in a statement here on Saturday that even salary in the unrevised pay-scales had not been given to the college staff, in time.

Ms Fresher: Ruby, a first-year student of the BBA course, was chosen 'Ms Fresher' at the freshers' party of the Dev Samaj College of Women, Sector 45-B. Veenu of B.Com (I) was declared the first runners-up and Mala of BBA (I) the second runners-up. The oath-taking ceremony of the newly elected students' council of the college was also held.

Stir threat: The ghar bachao committee has threatened to launch an agitation from next week if its demand for the formation of a notified area committee (NAC) for Naya Gaon is not accepted. A decision to this effect was taken at a meeting in Naya Gaon here on Sunday. The committee criticised the Punjab Government for ignoring their interests.

AMBALA
Girl education:
Swami Kalayan Devi ji Maharaj has stressed the need for girl education. He was addressing the 4th annual function of M M Engineering College, Mulana, 30 km from here on Saturday. He also inaugurated the administrative block of the college. Mr R.S. Chaudhary, Deputy Chairman, State Planning Board laid the foundation stone of the college guest house. The adviser of the college trust, Dr P.V. Gupta, and the Chairman of the college governing committee, Mr Tarsem Garg, also spoke.

HISAR
One killed:
One person was killed and four others injured when a jeep carrying them overturned on the Hansi-Barwala road, about 35 km from here, on Friday. The jeep, coming towards Hansi, collided head on with a tractor trailer and overturned. Anil Kumar resident of Danauda, died on the spot. The Hansi police has registered a case against jeep driver Dalbir Singh.

KURUKSHETRA
KU staff union:
The following were elected office-bearers of the Kurukshetra University Non-Teaching Employees Association (KUNTEA) here on Friday: President — Mr Karan Singh; Senior Vice-President — Mr Shiv Kumar; Vice-President — Mr Hira Singh Rawal; General Secretary — Mr Madan Gopal Sharma; Joint Secretary — Mr Suraj Bhan; Press Secretary — Mr A.D. PANIPAT
Power failure:
The city areas particularly Sanauli Road, Amarbhawan Chowk, Sethi Chowk, Old Subzi Mandi, Pachranga Bazar and Gur Mandi Bazaar remained without power last week for nearly five to 10 hours daily. Following power failures the supply of drinking water was also affected.

Paddy procurement: The district administration has made arrangements for the procurement of paddy. The District Food and Supplies Department has set up 13 purchase centres. The Deputy Commissioner, Mr Sandeep Garg, said 32,749 metric tonnes of paddy had arrived at the purchase centres till October 21 which was more than last year.

SONEPAT
Bid to smuggle cows:
The police foiled an attempt to smuggle 38 cows to UP near Murthal, about 10 km from here, on Friday. According to report the police intercepted two trucks carrying these cows. The occupants of these trucks were arrested on the spot. A case under the Anti-Cow Slaughter Act has been registered.

Blocked: Traffic on the Sonepat-Rohtak road near Harsana Kalan village, was blocked by agitating residents of nearby villages on Friday. The residents also gheraoed the officials who turned up to redress their grievances. Meanwhile, the indefinite dharna launched by the residents is still continuing.

Suicide: Suresh (27) allegedly committed suicide by consuming insecticide tablets at his house in Anand Colony here on Friday. According to the police, he took this extreme step after a family quarrel.

Death sentence: The District and Sessions Judge, Sonepat, Mr V P Chaudhary, has convicted three persons Sanjay, Anil and Sonu, all residents of Sonepat for the murder of a child. The three were awarded death sentence in the case. The accused had kidnapped a six-and-a-half year old girl on March 9,1997 and had murdered her after raping her.

Liquor seized: Officials of the Excise Department, conducted a raid at a deserted brick kiln and a shop at Ferozepore Bangar village near the Haryana-Delhi border, about 30 km from here, on Friday and seized liquor worth Rs 2.50 lakh from there. The SP, Mr K.P. Singh, told mediapersons that the liquor was contained in bags. The police arrested Bhushan, a resident of Rohni (Delhi).

Arrested: The Ganaur police has arrested a resident of Rajlu Garhi village, Kashmira, for allegedly assaulting a 13-year-old girl in the village and a case of rape has been registered against him. According to the police the arrest followed the registration of an FIR by girls father. He had alleged that his daughter had gone to the flour mill of the suspect where she was raped.

CHAMBA
Charas seized:
The Himachal police seized 5 kg charas in two separate incidents at Kihar and Mugla on Friday. According to a police spokesman two persons — Yaqub Mohd of Taloi village and Laloo Ram of Yol (Dharamsala) — had been arrested in this connection.

DALHOUSIE
Clubbed to death:
Mrs Premo Devi was clubbed to death with a wooden stick on Friday by her husband Khayalo Ram at her house near Bathri village. The police has arrested the suspect under Section 302 of the IPC.

NAHAN
TB eradication:
Mr Rakesh Kaushal, Deputy Commissioner, Sirmour, said here on Saturday that for the eradication of TB from the district, 10 laboratories would be established in the rural areas. He said TB clinics at district-level would be upgraded and equipped with the latest equipment.

SHIMLA
Urged:
The employees of the state Pollution Control Board have urged the Chief Minister, Mr P.K. Dhumal, not to shift their office to Bilaspur. The employees of the board met Mr Dhumal here on Saturday. They told him that a regional office of the board was already functioning at Bilaspur. They contended that the board had spent Rs 1.30 crore for constructing residential accommodation for the staff here. He said the staff would be financially burdened in case the office was shifted to Bilaspur.
