Parking space Shimla’s eyesore

A YOUNG couple driving a Maruti Zen bearing a Chandigarh registration number were stuck at the entry point of the Hotel Holiday Home car park at Shimla the other day. The couple, in their thirties, had two children seated at the rear seat. They appeared to have come to Shimla on a holiday but unable to find a place to park their vehicle. The car park did have room, but a foot deep mud and slush seemed to have compelled the visitors to re-think.

This car park was built in the early eighties. It could accommodate 40 cars at a time. An aqueduct below on RCC lintel acted as a channel for draining rainwater from the slope above. The venture was an ingenious device to create car parking space in an otherwise a waste nullah depression.

However, during the early nineties, an unusually heavy shower appears to have brought down too much of muck from above and choked the aqueduct. Engineers appear to be treating the blocking of the water channel as a natural calamity, making the task of clearing the channel too unpleasant. The rainwater run off accordingly flows over the park surface now. The situation has of late worsened and even slight rain converts the car park into a virtual lake. None appears to be concerned at the wasted parking space in the heart of the town and the consequent diminished revenue return therefrom.

It is understood that the state government is planning to build a multi-storeyed car park at the point. But that may take many years to accomplish.

She was awarded by the Punjab Lalit Akademi in 1980, 81 and 82 and was honoured with Nishan-e-Khalsa at Anandpur Sahib. Mother of a son, Surjit Kaur is busy even after retirement teaching painting and holding solo shows of her works.

Preeti Sahota is another young artist of the region. Specialising in the black and white medium a lecturer in Apeejay College of Fine Arts, Preeti has a strong academic background. A gold medallist in MA in Fine Arts from Guru Nanak Dev University, she also won the Commendation Certificate at the 64th All-India Exhibition of Arts, 1998 and an award by Punjab Art Heritage.
