Mundell wins Nobel Economics Prize
STOCKHOLM, Oct 13 (Reuters) — Mr Robert Mundell, whose research on monetary and fiscal policy under different exchange rate regimes pointed the way to Europe’s economic and monetary union, won the 1999 Nobel Prize for Economics today. "Robert Mundell has established the foundation for the theory which dominates practical policy considerations of monetary and fiscal policy in open economies,’’ the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences said in awarding the prize.

Fodder scam case
PATNA, Oct 13 (PTI) — The Central Bureau of Investigation has filed yet another charge sheet against 55 accused in a regular case of the fodder scam. The investigating agency’s standing counsel, Mr L.R. Ansari, submitted the charge sheet in the court of the designated CBI Judge, Mr S. K. Lal, in connection with case no 57(a)/96 of the multi-crore scam that deals with fraudulent withdrawals of Rs 9.90 crore from the Gumla treasury by state Animal Husbandry Department officials through "fake and forged’’ bill.

Lok Sabha session
NEW DELHI, Oct 13 (UNI) — The first session of the 13th Lok Sabha will be held from October 20 to 29 for oath and affirmation of the newly elected members, election of the Speaker and other important business. The decision to this effect was taken by the Union Cabinet here today. While the first two days will be devoted to oath and affirmation of the new members by a protem Speaker to be appointed by President K.R. Narayanan, the main agenda on October 22 is to elect a new Speaker.

Kerala violence
KANNUR, Oct 13 (PTI) — Sporadic incidents of violence were reported since last night from different places at Koothuparamba in Kerala’s Kannur district where bomb attacks on BJP-RSS workers allegedly by CPM activists yesterday left one person dead and two injured. Two state-owned buses were damaged by a group of stone-pelting miscreants at Karetta late last night, the police said today.

Sunil Dutt arrested
MUMBAI, Oct 13 (PTI) — Recently-elected Congress MP Sunil Dutt, Youth Congress leader Charansingh Sapra, and over 150 party workers today courted arrest in protest against the hike in diesel prices by the Union Government recently. Addressing party workers at Hutatma Chowk in South Mumbai, Sunil Dutt described 35 per cent hike in diesel prices as "unjustified" and said that it would raise inflation further.

RAPS unit
KOTA, Oct 13 (PTI) — The third unit of the Rajasthan Atomic Power Station (RAPS) at Rawatbhata, will become critical on November 20, director of the project V K Chaturvedi said. Following permission from the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board, the 220-megawatt reactor would go critical on November 20 and would start generating power by November 30, Mr Chaturvedi said in a statement today.

3 labourers killed
NEW DELHI, Oct 13 (PTI) — Three labourers were killed and two others were seriously injured today when water gushed in a new water treatment plant they were cleaning in the Jaffrabad area of North-East Delhi, fire brigade sources said. While Niranjan (55), Idu (20) and an unidentified youth died in the plant following heavy inflow of water, two others Girish (30) and Anurag (20) were rescued and admitted to the Guru Tegh Bahadur Hospital in a serious condition, they said.

UN hostages
SUKHUMI, (Georgia), Oct 13 (Reuters) — Gunmen holding several UN Military observers and their translator in Georgia’s breakaway region of Abkhazia are demanding a $200,000 ransom for their return, the Abkhaz Defence Minister said today. Mr Vladimir Minkanba told journalists in the regional capital Sukhumi that eight masked gunmen seized the observers early on today after their helicopter touched down in an Abkhaz mountain village controlled by the Georgian forces.

CWC meeting
NEW DELHI, Oct 13 (TNS) — The Congress Working Committee (CWC) is scheduled to meet here next weekend to discuss at length the outcome of the recent elections. The meeting has been scheduled next week as the first session of the 13th Lok Sabha has been convened from October 20. The CWC would meet between October 23-24. The decision was taken at an informal meeting of the CWC here last night.

SD Sharma better
NEW DELHI, Oct 13 (UNI) — The condition of former President S.D. Sharma, under treatment at a hospital here since last Saturday, improved today, his family said. Dr Sharma, admitted at the Escorts Heart Institute and Hospital, is, however, still on artificial respiration.
