Competition:
The Bharat Vikas Parishad (BVP) here is organising a national songs competition of school and college students at Baring Union Christian College on Friday at 9 a.m. According to Prof K.N Sharma, Secretary of the BVP, Mr Madan Mohan Mittal, Food and Supplies Minister, would be the chief guest.

GURDASPUR
Ban:
Mr S.K. Sandhu, District Magistrate, has banned the digging and using soil along Chakki river. The ban was imposed under Section 144 of the Cr PC till December 2.

One held: The police has arrested Jit Ram for his alleged involvement in JBT papers leakage. Earlier, the police arrested Sukhdeep Singh, alias Jolly, in this regard, according to Mr Varinder Kumar, SSP. He said the accused confessed that he sold eight papers to Jolly.

Case registered: The police arrested Mohammad Nazar near Jainpur village on the Indo-Pak border in this district on Thursday. A case was registered against him.

NAWANSHAHR
Condemned:
Mr Iqbal Singh, member, PPCC, in a press statement here on Thursday, has strongly condemned the decision of the Union Government to hike the price of diesel by about 40 per cent. He demanded immediate withdrawal of the measure and said the price hike would severely affect farmers and transporters.

PHAGWARA
Selected:
Five football players of the local Guru Nanak College have been included in the 18-member football squad of Guru Nanak Dev University. The selection was made here on Wednesday for participation in the North Zone Inter-University Football Championship being held at Allahabad. Mr Sukhjit Singh of Lyallpur Khalsa College, Jalandhar, will lead the team.

SAMANA
Paddy:
About 40,000 bags of paddy are lying at the Kakrala purchase centre in the subdivision for the last 20 days. The arthiyas of Kakrala said not a single bag had been purchased by the Food Corporation of India. The Senior Regional Manager of the FCI, Punjab visited Kakrala on Wednesday and assured of purchases with no results so far.

Blood donation: On the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, the youth wing of the Chandigarh Territorial Congress organised a blood donation camp at the Mani Majra rural complex. About 50 of its members donated blood. The camp was organised under the supervision of Prof Neelam Marwaha, Head, department of Haematology and Transfusion Medicine, GMCH, Sector 32.

CSI poll: The following have been elected office-bearers of the managing committee of the Computer Society of India (CSI), Chandigarh Chapter, for 1999-2000: Chairman — Mr D.P. Goel; Vice-Chairman — Mr Jarnail Singh; and Secretary — Mr C. Ghansyam.

Eye camp: The Indian Red Cross Society, UT, will organise a free eye camp on October 9 in Colony No 4, industrial Area, Phase I.

Hobby classes in painting: Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 10 organised hobby classes in painting which ended on Thursday. An exhibition of works by students was also held It was followed by an on-the-spot painting competition. Snigdha, Renu Bhatia, Sanjana, Sonia, Kirti, Vandana , Vijay, Saroj, Ramanpreet, Inder Barua, Navpreet and Sham Lal got prizes in the contests. top

AMBALA
Vijay Smarak:
Lt-Gen G.S. Sihota, GOC, 2 Corps, formally inaugurated a Vijay Samarak here on Thursday by laying a wreath at the smarak. The memorial has been raised to pay homage to the soldiers who laid down their lives in the 1971 Indo-Pak war. The memorial has been designed and constructed by 65 Engineer Bridge Regiment near Kharga Stadium here. Gen V.P. Malik, Chief of the Army Staff, later addressed officers and jawans on the occasion of the raising day of the 2 Corps.

HISAR
Elected:
The following have been elected office-bearers of the Rotary Central here: President — Mr Harish Raheja; Senior Vice-President — Mr Gautam Narang; Vice-President — Mr V.K Gupta; Secretary — Mr Krishan Malik; Joint Secretary — Mr R.S Khanna; and Treasurer — Mr Rakesh Dhawan.

ROHTAK
Competition:
The Model School team here bagged the first prize in an inter-school group song competition organised by the school on Wednesday. The DAV School team got the second prize and the teams of Shiksha Bharti and MDN schools jointly got the third position. The chief guest, Ms Rupam Jha, gave away the prizes.

SONEPAT
Busted:
With the arrest of one person, the CIA staff on Thursday claimed to have busted an inter-state gang of robbers operating in parts of Haryana, UP and Delhi for the past few months. According to the police, the arrested culprit had been identified as Dilshad of Kutana village in Baghpat district of UP. The police has also solved a number of looting and dacoity cases during the interrogation of the culprit. It has launched a hunt to apprehend five more members of the gang, who are still at large.

Telegrams: Resentment prevails among the inhabitants of Kharkhauda town against the sending of telegrams by post at the post office here. Many residents pointed out that the town did not have a separate telegraph office and this was the main reason for sending the telegrams by post.

Welfare schemes: The state unit of Sewa Bharati has launched 275 schemes for the welfare of the people, particularly women and girls, in the state. According to a press note issued here, it has opened 15 children’s centres, 13 coaching centres, six 'balwadis', eight primary schools, 73 sewing schools for women, eight health centres and two industrial centres. The organisation has decided to open 54 more centres during the current year in the state.top
