One killed in mishap

CHANDIGARH, Nov 27 — A resident of Devi Nagar was killed when he was hit by a jeep near the Mataur village barrier late last night.

According to the police sources, Harbans Singh was driving his motorcycle when he was hit by a jeep, HR-01-F-5888, driven by a Mohali resident, Sukhpreet Singh. The injured was rushed to the hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

A case under Sections 279 and 304-A of the IPC has been registered at the Sector 36 police station.

Poppy seized: The police has arrested Joga Singh, a resident of Rampur village near Hoshiarpur, for possessing 1.8 kg of poppy husk. He was driving a bus and was signalled to stop near the Sectors 16-23 roundabout. Since he did not have any documents, the bus was searched and the poppy husk was recovered.

A case under Section 15 of the NDPS Act has been registered at the Central Police Station. Joga Singh was later produced in a city court which remanded him to judicial custody for 15 days.

Bootlegger held: The police has arrested Jiya Lal, a resident of Colony Number 5, for possessing eight bottles of whisky. A case under Sections 61, 1 and 14 of the Excise Act has been registered against him a the Sector 34 police station.

Gamblers arrested: Pandit Colony residents Raj Pal and Inderjit were arrested for gambling at a public place. A case under Sections 13,3 and 37 of the Gambling Act has been registered.

Robbers caught: Three persons — Joginder, Sher Singh and Sunil Ram — were arrested by the local police, following raids in the area by the CIA staff. Investigations by the police revealed that these suspects were involved in the robbery that took place on November 15 in Sector 2 here.

The three were also involved in a Sector 7 robbery incident on November 25. The police has recovered valuables worth Rs 75,000 from them. A case under Section 457 and 380 of the IPC has been registered by the local police. The suspects have been remanded to the police custody.

Gambler booked: Devi Dyal, a resident of Dhaluwal village, was booked today by the Pinjore police for allegedly gambling at a public place in the village. A case under Section 13A-3-67 of the Gambling Act has been registered by the local police.Back

Theatre award for Sahib Singh

CHANDIGARH, Nov 27 — The Sambhang Theatre Group of Swami Ram Tirath Educational Charitable and HM Society today organised 'Natyaotsav-99', a one-act play competition, in collaboration with MCM DAV College for Women at the college premises. A total of 13 teams participated in this drama function.

Justice D.V. Sehgal, a former Judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court and Chairman, Lok Adalat, inaugurated the function. Mr Gursharan Singh was the guest of honour. In the evening, Mr Prabhakar Sharma, Chief General Manager, North East Circle, State Bank of India, was the chief guest. Ms Sneh Mahajan, Principal of the college, welcomed the chief guest.

As an annual feature, Sahib Singh, a theatre artiste, was conferred the Sambhang Theatre Award today. In the college category DAV College, Sector 10, won the running trophy for standing first. The second position went to the host college. A special prize was awarded to Dev Samaj College for Education, Sector 36.Back

Where pulses are cheaper

PANCHKULA, Nov 27 — The prices of pulses in the town are marginally lower or at a par with the prices in Chandigarh and S.A.S. Nagar.

The price of a kg of rajmah was Rs 26 in Sector 8 while it was available for Rs 28 in the Sector 7 departmental stores. The same could be had for Rs 32 in Chandigarh while it was priced at Rs 30 in S.A.S. Nagar.

Arhar was the most expensive at Rs 38 a kg in Sector 7 and was cheaper by Rs 6, at Rs 32 a kg, in Sector 8. However, it could be bought for Rs 40 a kg in S.A.S. Nagar and Rs 37 in Chandigarh. Kala chana could be had for Rs 22 a kg in Sector 7 and Rs 20 a kg in Sector 6 whereas it was being sold at Rs 20 and Rs 22 a kg in Chandigarh and S.A.S. Nagar, respectively.

The price of soyabean varied between Rs 24 and Rs 30 a kg in Sectors 6, 7 and 8 while kabuli chana could be had for Rs 30, Rs 35 and Rs 45 a kg in the three sectors. The salesman in the shops attributed the difference in prices to the quality of the chana. A kg of motth was available at Rs 30 in these sectors as also in S.A.S. Nagar and Chandigarh.

There was no variation in the prices of rongi white and rongi lal which was available at Rs 30 a kg in most grocery shops of the town while moong sabat was available at Rs 26 and Rs 30 a kg in Sectors 8 and 7, respectively. Moong dhuli was available for Rs 34 in Sector 6, while moong chilka was priced at Rs 29 a kg in Sector 8.

Peas were available for Rs 20 a kg, malka for Rs 32 a kg and masri for Rs 30 a kg in Sector 7 while it was being sold for Rs 20, Rs 30 and Rs 28 a kg, respectively, in Sector 8. Masoor kala and desi were available for Rs 30 a kg in Sector 7 and Rs 28 a kg in Sector 8.

Mah dhuli was priced at Rs 36 and Rs 38 a kg in Sectors 7 and 8 respectively in comparison to its price of Rs 35 a kg in S.A.S. Nagar and Rs 32 a kg in Chandigarh. This was the only one variety which was priced higher in comparison to its price in Chandigarh and S.A.S. Nagar.Back



 


Aishwarya, Jatin win road races

CHANDIGARH, Nov 27 — Aishwarya Singh among girls and Jatin among boys, both in the under-six section, won the road race at the fifth Panchkula District Roller Skating Championship which entered the penultimate day today at the newly-built skating rink of Blue Bird School in Sector 16 of Panchkula.

Later, in a girls' under-14 roller hockey match, Blue Bird School beat Hansraj Club in the final, 3-0. Geetika scored all three goals for the winners.

In the under-14 boys' final, Hans Raj Club beat Manav Mangal Club, 10-0, with Amrinder scoring five goals and Nandeep three goals.

Athletics meet: The Chandigarh State Sub-Junior, Junior and Senior Athletics Championship will begin here tomorrow at Sport Complex, Sector 7, where more than 300 athletes will participate. According to Milkha Singh, President of the Amateur Athletic Association of Chandigarh, organiser of this three-day meet, will have competitions in age groups of under-14, under-16, under-18, under-20, under-22 for men and women.

Mr Ravinder Chaudhary, Secretary of the association, said only registered athletes of the city would be allowed to take part, as per the directions of the Amateur Athletic Federation of India. A special counter has been set up at the Sector 7 Sport Complex which will open tomorrow at 7.30 am to facilitiate the registration of athletes.

The UT junior team for participation in the Junior National Athletics championship to be held at Tamil Nadu in January next year will also be selected during the course of this meet.

The championship will begin tomorrow at 8.30 am with 800 m final for athletes under the age of 22, followed by shot put for under-22 women athletes.

UT skating: Saloni in the girls' section and Shivam in the boys' under-six section rink race, won first position each in the Chandigarh State Roller Skating Championship which was inaugurated by Dr Dharam Singh, ex-Olympian, at the Sector 10 Skating Rink here today.

The meet is being organised by the Chandigarh Roller Skating Association. The other results of today's events are as follows: Roller hockey (sub-junior) — St Stephen's School, Sector 45, beat Rink B team, 6-1.

Dhindsa congratulated: Members of the executive committee of the Chandigarh Amateur Cycling Association have congratuled its President, Mr Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa, for being appointed the Union Minister for Urban Employment and Poverty Alleviation. A press note signed by Mr Abnash Singh Chhatwal, IAS and Senior Vice-President of the CACA, said Mr Dhindsa deserved the honour which was welcomed by all sportsmen. He said Mr Dhindsa, who was President of the Punjab Olympic Association had tried hard in bringing Indian cycling to its present status.

The members also hoped that Mr Dhindsa would fulfill their long pending demand of a velodrome in Chandigarh.

Meanwhile, the Chandigarh Cycling Meet will begin here tomorrow at Government College, Sector 11.

City volleyball: The Chandigarh Volleyball Association will organise the UT Senior Men, Women and Junior Boys and Girls Volleyball Championships from December 10 to 12 at the Sector 7 Sport Complex, according to a press note of the association.

The teams of various departments, educational institutions and clubs will take part in this three-day meet, on the basis of which, the UT senior and junior teams will also be selected for various national meets.

The 26th Junior National Volleyball Championship is to be held at Tiruchirapalli (Tamil Nadu) from December 28 to January 2, 2000. The 48th Senior National Volleyball Championship will be held at Salem (Tamil Nadu) from January 9 to 16 next year.

In the juniors' section, both boys and girls born on or after January 1, 1982, are eligible to take part in the meet.

The participating teams should confirm their entries with the Secretary of the CVA or with Mr Suresh Kumar, coach at the Sector 7 Sport Complex by December 9.

Inter-school sport: Eleven schools of the city participated in the Inter-school Sport Meet organised by the Association of Private Educational Insititutions, here at the Sector 46 Sport Complex today.

The events for students of nursery onwards were held, including 20m, 30m, 50 m and 100 m races in various age-groups for boys and girls, besides bursting of balloons, picking up flags, skipping and relay races.

The schools which took part in the meet were Glory Public School, Sai Niketan School, National Montessori, Central Model, Dale Spring, Modern Convent, St Patrick's, Vishav Bharti, Anchal Preparatory School among others.

Cricket tourney: The Shivani Cash Prize Cricket Tournament will be held at Indira Colony in Mani Majra on December 4. Entries close on November 30 with Saraswati Vidya Public School, 79, Indira Colony, Mani Majra.

President named: Mr Prakash Chand of Dadu Majra has been named President of the Young Football Club which is affiliated to the Chandigarh Football Association.

Mr Satwant Singh is the Chairman of the body, Mr V.K. Chadha the Vice-Chairman, Mr Sube Singh is the Vice-President, Mr S.K. Bhardwaj is the Secretary and Mr Isham Singh is the Treasurer.

Golf: Lady captain Dalbir Sahi and Neelu Chopra returned the best gross cards in silver and bronze division, respectively, in the Ladies Medal round played at the Chandigarh Golf Club.
