FARIDKOT
Mishap:
A woman of Kaberbachha village died on the spot while another person died on way to hospital while five persons were injured who were admitted to local GGS Medical College. The jeep (PB05-D8584) in which they were travelling collided with a bus (PB30A/9855) of New Satnam Bus Service on the Faridkot-Kotkapura road on Monday.

HOSHIARPUR
Voters list:
Processing for amendment in voters lists started in the district on Monday which would be completed by January 2000. This was disclosed by Mr Iqbal Singh Sidhu, Deputy Commissioner-cum-District Election Officer, Hoshiarpur, in a press note issued here on Monday. He said preliminary publication of voters lists had been done for which claims and objections could be filed up to November 30, 1999. The disposal of claims and objections would be done up to January 5, 2000. The publication of final voters lists would be done on January 7, 2000.

JALANDHAR
Medical camp:
A free diabetes and eye care camp was organised here on Sunday where Dr S.S. Dhingra, of the Patel Hospital here and Dr (Mrs) Damanjot Dhingra examined 300 patients.

KAPURTHALA
Panel formed:
The Punjab Government has formed a high-level committee to look after the welfare of mentally retarded children living in a home for mentally retarded children situated near local Railway station. Mr V.K. Singh, Deputy Commissioner, has been appointed chairman of the committee while the SSP, the DFSC, the DPRO, the Programme Officer, the District Social Security Officer, a XEN (PWD), presidents of two non-governmental organisations and Superintendent, Home for Mentally Retarded Children, have been made members of the committee.

Function: The Intellectual cell of District Congress Committee here organised a function on Sunday at MDSD School on the Mall to celebrate birthday of Jawahar Lal Nehru. Mr Sudesh Kumar Sharma, chairman, district unit, Mr Jagtar Singh Multani, former minister and Mr Kilkhi Ram Ratt, Member All-India Congress Committee, were among those who addressed the function. Mr Gulzar Singh, Chairman, Punjab Pradesh Congress Sewa Dal, presided over the function.

Nominated: Mr Malwinder Singh Chahal has been appointed Vice-President of Punjab Youth Congress by the President of state Youth Congress, according to press note issued here on Sunday.

KHARAR
Painting contest:
As part of celebrations on the Children's Day, the local Lions Club organised an "inter-school international peace poster painting contest at Henderson Jubilee School here on Sunday. As many as 48 school children from eight different local schools participated in the contest. Club president Lion Mr B.R. Anand gave away the prizes to the winners.

MOGA
Air pollution:
Air pollution in almost all districts of Moga, Faridkot, Ferozepore and Muktsar has reportedly increased to dangerous levels and at least 25 per cent of school children are reported to be suffering from various respiratory diseases. Several tonnes of pollution are discharged everyday in these districts due to smoke emitting from industries, burning of straw by farmers and paddy husk released by the rice millers, a report said.

Mandi Board: The income of the local Mandi Board from market fee has increased from Rs 261 crore last year to RS 416 crore this year. This was stated by the chairman of the board, Mr Mall Singh Ghumman, at Lopo village in the district on Saturday while laying the foundation stone of a marketing yard at the village.

NAWANSHAHR
Medical check-up:
The local Arya Samaj organised its 17th free medical check-up camp here at Arya Samaj Mandir on Sunday. Comrade Mohanlal Sareen, a veteran freedom fighter, inaugurated the camp in which 150 patients were examined. Medicines, free of cost, were also given to the needy patients, informed Mr Surinder Mohan Tejpal, secretary, Arya Samaj, in a press note issued here on Monday.

PATIALA
Function:
The annual function of Kaintal Junior School was held here on Sunday. Punjab Government Press Administrator Surinder Riar was the chief guest. School Principal Neena Dhundia highlighted the activities being done in the school. A cultural programme was presented by students.

TARN TARAN
Cultural fair:
A large number of people of the area thronged the annual two-day cultural fair which concluded on Sunday. It was organised by the local Panj-Darya Sabhyacharak Kendra. Mr Sucha Singh Langah, Minister of State for Industry, Punjab, Mr Tarlochan Singh Tur, an MP, Mr Major Singh Ubboke, former MP and others participated in the fair.

Mass marriages: Twelve mass marriages of Dalit girls of the area were solemnised here on Sunday in a function organised by the local Citizen Council which was presided over by Mr Kirpal Singh, former MP and President of Chief Khalsa Diwan, Amritsar. Mr Gurjit Singh Rana, M.D. Rana Sugar Mills, was the chief guest, Mr Gurneet Singh Rajput, president of the council, said articles of domestic use, clothes and utensils were given to the newly-wed couples by the council, as wedding presents.

Demanded: The college unit of the Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad submitted a memorandum to the Principal of the Homoeopathic Medical College, Sector 26, on Monday, demanding identity cards, common room, students notice board and improvement in canteen facilities. It also demanded a five-day week for third-year students who were required to do hospital duties every Saturday.

Rotary Club: As many as 374 students of Little Flower School, Mani Majra, catering primarily to the under-privileged children, will receive a glass of milk and a packet of biscuits each daily for one academic year. The initiative has been taken by Mr Shaju Peter and other members of Rotary Club.

Meeting: Demands for immediate release of bonus and implementation of central pay scales were discussed at a meeting of the Government Teachers Union on Monday. The executive committee criticised the UT Education Department for ignoring demands of teachers and decided to submit a memorandum to the UT Education Secretary.

Protest week: The All-India Passport Employees Association is observing protest week from Monday in support of its demands. The association has served a notice to the Ministry of External Affairs, failing which members of the association will go on a one-day strike on November 26.

Function: Over 300 children participated in a Children's Day function organised by the House Owners Welfare Association, Sector 34, on Sunday. Races for boys and girls, a fancy dress contest and a cultural programme were held.

Inaugurated: Mr H.A. Yadav, Director, Printing, New Delhi, inaugurated a paper godown at Government of India Text Book Press on Saturday. He awarded it trophies for 1994-95 and 1995-96 for best production.

PANCHKULA
Eye camp:
The Upkaar Society donated a water cooler to Government Senior Secondary School, Sector 7, on Monday. A free eye camp was also held at Government Senior Secondary School, Sector 6, in which more than 400 students were examined and provided with free medicines and spectacles.

SAS NAGAR
Improper sanitation:
Dr R.S. Kang, Medical Officer of the Phase VII civil dispensary, asked the local Municipal Council on Monday to ensure proper sanitation in residential areas. He said litter on B and C roads, stray dogs, congress grass and absence of fog machines could spread diseases.

AMBALA
Golden jubilee:
Week-long celebrations have started in GRSD Senior Secondary School, in the city here on the occasion of its golden jubilee. Principal Shankar Kashyap said a science exhibition, declamation contest, sports competition and a poetic recitation would be organised. On the concluding and prize distribution day on Thursday, the chairman of All-India Agroha Vikas Trust, Mr Nand Kishor Goenka, will be the chief guest.

Bal Mela: Ms Krishna Singh, wife of Commissioner, Ambala range, on Sunday inaugurated a Bal Mela at the Gandhi Grounds in the cantonment here on Sunday which would continue for five days. On this occasion the students of several school presented a colourful cultural show.

Appointed: HPCC President Bhupinder Singh Hooda has appointed Mr Randhir Chaudhry as president of the Kisan Cell of the district unit, according to a press note issued by the party.

Talent show:
A three-day talent competition at Kumari Vidyawati DAV College, here concluded on Sunday. Mr Vijay Sabharwal of Joint DAV Colleges Managing Committees of Haryana, presided over.

KURUKSHETRA
Children's Day:
To commemorate Jawahar Lal Nehru's 110th birthday, the District Kurukshetra Child Welfare Council organised Children's Day at the premises of Daronacharya Stadium here on Sunday. The chief guest, Ambala Division Commissioner, Mr Chander Singh, gave away prizes to the winning children who participated in various cultural programmes, while the Kurukshetra Deputy Commissioner, Mrs Jyoti Arora, presided over the function.

ROHTAK
Elected:
Mr Raj Singh Nandal was elected as President of the Jat Education Society on Sunday. He defeated his rival, Mr Paramjit Tahlan, by a margin of 111 votes.

SIRSA
Held:
The Sirsa police on Sunday arrested Iqubal Singh and Virender Singh of Jandwala Jatan village in the district and seized 11 kg of poppy husk from them. While giving this information, Mr Kameshver Kumar Mishra, SP, said here on Monday that the police also seized 20 kg of poppy husk from Sita Ram of Suckchain village on Sunday and registered a case under the NDPS Act against accused.

Arrested: Dalip Singh and his son Shri Chand of Pirukhera village in the district were arrested by the police on Sunday on charge of beating a married woman. While giving this information, SP, Kameshver Kumar Mishra said here on Monday that in a complaint to the police Prithvi Raj of Munnanwali village alleged that his daughter was married to Subhash son of Dalip of Pirukhera village on February 16, 1994 and dowry was also given. He further alleged that the accused beat up and harassed his daughter, who was kicked out from her in-laws house by the accused as they were demanding more dowry.

Resentment: Resentment prevails among residents of local Maharaja Agarsain Colony and its adjoining areas against the Public Health Authorities as sewerage system in this area has been out of order. They alleged that dirty water and sullage was overflowing from manholes and sewerage lines were not working. The Maharaja Agarsain Sudhar has alleged that repeated complaints have been made to the authorities concerned but nothing has been done so far. They warned that in case no action was initiated they would be forced to launch an agitation.

Beaten up: Suman of local Peer Basti has alleged that her husband beat her up at her parents' house on Sunday which resulted in her miscarriage as she was pregnant. She alleged that she was sent to her parents house by her husband Om Parkash of Baruwali for bringing money from her parents but her parents refused her. She further alleged that her husband came to her parents house where she was beaten by him which caused the miscarriage. The police has registered a case under Section 316, IPC, against the accused.

SONEPAT
Injured:
Three persons riding a scooter were injured when a car hit the scooter on a road near Sector 14, a residential colony of HUDA, here on Sunday. All injured were hospitalised and they are stated to be out of danger. The police has registered a case against the car driver.

YAMUNANAGAR
Accident:
Two persons were killed and two seriously injured in an accident involving two motorcycles on main Jagadhri road in the district at midnight on Saturday. According to the police Raman (20), who was driving a motor cycle, died on the spot while Upkar (21), who was riding pillion, succumbed to his injuries on his way to the PGI, Chandigarh. Ranbir (22), who was driving another motor cycle, was seriously injured and admitted to a local hospital in a serious condition and Rajeev (23), riding pillion, was referred to the PGI, Chandigarh, also in serious condition.

Threat: The Haryana Backward Kranti Morcha has demanded that the reservation given by the Mandal Commission to the Backward Class in government jobs should not be disturbed, Mr Jai Chand Chauhan, President of the state unit of the morcha, said this while addressing workers here on Sunday. He said 27 per cent quota which was allocated by the commission should continue otherwise they would be forced to launch an agitation.

CHAMBA
Alleged:
The Himachal Vikas Congress (HVC) has alleged that despite having same partners in the coalition governments at the Centre and the state, the grass-roots leaders of a coalition partner of the HVC had been ignored during the recent visit of Mr Shanta Kumar, Union Minister of Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution System to Chamba. In a press note issued here on Monday the HVC's district general secretary, Mr Shadi Lal Sharma, asserted that the HVC did not believe in the politics of pressures but had faith in the balanced development of the state and the uplift of its people.

HAMIRPUR
Temple Act:
Mahant Shiv Gir, vice-chairman of the Baba Balak Nath Temple Trust, Deotsidh, has demanded strict enforcement of the Temple Act in order to bring radical changes in the functioning of the temple. Talking to mediapersons at his residence in Deotsidh on Monday, he alleged that the temple income was being misappropriated by the government machinery at the behest of politicians. He criticised the successive state governments for appointing temple trustees purely on political considerations.

SHIMLA
Suicide:
A man and a woman allegedly committed suicide in different incidents in Hamirpur district since Saturday night, the police sources said on Sunday. While the man committed suicide by hanging himself with a rope at Thathwin village, the woman ended her life by consuming poison at Dabrera village. The police has sent the body of man for a post-mortem examination and registered a case in connection with suicide by the woman.

UNA
One killed:
Mohamad (16) was killed when a truck hit him near Tuiri village, 10 km from here, on Sunday. He was admitted to the District Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. The driver of the truck was arrested.
