New UNESCO chief sworn in
PARIS, Nov 15 (Reuters) — Japanese diplomat Koichiro Matsuura was today sworn in as the new Director-General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO). Mr Matsuura took the oath in a plenary session of UNESCO's general conference at the organisation's headquarters here.

Earthquake in Indian Ocean
NEW DELHI, Nov 15 (PTI) — An earthquake of moderate intensity was recorded in the Indian Ocean today, Met Department sources said here. The quake, measuring 6.6 on the Richter scale, with its epicentre at latitude 1.85 degrees south and longitude 88.4 degrees east, occurred at 11.13 a.m.

Orissa Governor
BHUBANESWAR, Nov 15 (UNI) — Former Tamil Nadu Chief Secretary M.M. Rajendran was today sworn in as Governor of cyclone-ravaged Orissa. Orissa High Court Chief Justice R.K. Patra administered the oath of office and secrecy to Mr Rajendran at a simple function at the Raj Bhavan here. He is the 34th governor of Orissa.

Petrol station torched
HYDERABAD, Nov 15 (PTI) — Naxalites of the outlawed Janashakthi extremist group ransacked a petrol station before torching it in Warangal district today. At least 20 extremists belonging to Ramesh Dalam damaged the station and later set it on fire in Mulug mandal, the police said adding they were protesting the alleged killing of their "comrades" in police encounters in Karimnagar and Warangal districts recently.

House blasted
PATNA, Nov 15 (PTI) — Suspected People's War Group (PWG) activists blew up the house of a farmer at Supauli village in Patna district late last night, the police said. The extremists detonated dynamites to blow up the house of Janaki Devi who lodged a complaint with the Masaurhi police station in this connection. They took away cash and other valuables from the house. None was injured in the incident.

Quake toll 452
ISTANBUL, Nov 15 (DPA) — The number of people known to have been killed in Friday's earthquake in north-west Turkey is at least 452, the crisis desk in Ankara said today as quoted by the news agency Anadolu. More than 2,386 persons were injured in the quake, it said, adding that 40 survivors had been pulled alive from wrecked buildings.

Launch fails
TOKYO, Nov 15 (Reuters) — A Japanese rocket carrying a satellite failed to reach orbit and was deliberately blown up about eight minutes after its launch on Monday, a spokesman for the National Space Development Agency of Japan said. The flagship Japanese H-2 rocket carrying a multi-purpose satellite for aviation control and meteorological observation blasted off from the Tanegashima space centre in southern Japan.
