Australia set for massive total BRISBANE, Australia, Nov 6 (Reuters) A record unbroken opening partnership of 233 between Michael Slater and Greg Blewett subdued the Pakistan pace attack and put Australia in a strong position at the end of the second day today of the first Test as it chased Pakistans first innings total of 367. Slater dominated proceedings, his exuberant batting style, timing and a few slices of luck carrying him to 134 not out, while an overshadowed Blewett finished undefeated on 77. Luck because Slater was dropped on 78 and 99. The pairs unbeaten run stand, scored in just over four hours, eclipsed the previous Australian record for the first wicket against Pakistan of 176 set by Slater and former captain Mark Taylor in Rawalpindi in 1994. After seeing off, with a few difficulties, the new ball pace pairing of captain Wasim Akram and Shoaib Akhtar, Slater and Blewett set about overpowering the Pakistan attack. Slater in particular started to score runs quickly, and seemed to enjoying his sparring with the pacy Akhtar, who returned through the innings for short fiery spells. Akhtars pace and line set Slater on his backside a number of times, and he also took a couple of hits to the body. Earlier, the Australians had hoped to wrap up the Pakistan tailenders quickly and cheaply this morning after claiming three late wickets yesterday, but were thwarted by an adventurous innings of 61 from wicketkeeper Moin Khan. Reprising his big-hitting form from the World Cup one-day tournament this year, Khan swiped nine fours and a six off the Australian attack before he was last man out with the score on 367. As a mark of respect for West Indian fast-bowler Malcolm Marshall who died of colon cancer earlier this week, both teams assembled on the field for a minutes silence before the start of play. Srinath rallies to win title PUNE, Nov 6 (UNI) Third seeded Indian Davis Cuper Prahlad Srinath today made a remarkable recovery to claim third leg satellite tennis title beating fourth seeded Thomas Messmer of Germany in an absorbing tussle at 6-7(6-8) 6-4, 6-2 here at Deccan Gymkhana. Srinath thus has the distinction of winning back-to-back singles titles after having won the second leg at the expense of Tom Chicoine of the USA last week at the same venue. The win at the third leg put him on the top of the draw for the masters to be held in Mumbai from Monday having aggregated a tally of 53 circuit points which is translated into 32 ATP points. He is followed by Messmer who accumulated (45) circuit points, Tom Chicoine has been relegated to the third slot with 35 circuit points while Radim Zitko totalled 34 points. Srinath had to draw on all his resources before quelling the rival and receiving the fat purse of Rs 23,910. Srinath troubled by injury to his right leg had a tough doubles match against the Kirtane cousins Nitin and Sandeep last evening which left him rather sluggish in the opening stanzas of the game. Srinath started on the wrong foot as he dropped his serve in the very first game. Srinath was having problems with his first serve. But the broke back to level at 2-2. Despite trailing 0-30 he took four points in a row with his superbly executed back hand down the line winners. Messmer made it 3-3 all on his serve. The set then resolved via tie-breaker. The second set moved with serve and both were level at 3-3. Then Messmer was down 0-40 on his serve but fought his way back and made deuce taking three points in succession. But the German double faulted at the crucial juncture and dropped his serve to trail 3-4. Srinath despite some hiccups made it 5-3 firing an ace to lead 30-15 before taking the game. In the final set Messmer showed a sudden lapse in concentration, while the Indian grew in confidence and played more positive tennis. Messmer after being in arrears at 30-40 double faulted and dropped his serve to trail 0-1. The German, who again committed a double fault and was down 0-3, lost his grip on the match. It was then smooth sailing for Srinath who made it 4-0 on his serve. The top seeded doubles combination of Kirtane cousins Nitin and Sandeep proved too good for the rival Indian pair of Rohan Bopanna and Kedar Shah as they won in straight sets 6-1, 6-3 in 56 minutes. Both Nitin and Sandeep who have been showing cohesion and understanding, also won the back-to-back doubles title after winning in the first leg as well. They broke Bopanna in the first and the fifth game and Shah in the seventh to take the set 6-1. Bopanna and Shah put up some resistance in the second but after Shah dropped his serve in the fourth game lost the set 3-6 and the match. Following are the results mens singles final: Phahlad Srinath (Ind) beat Thomas Messmer (Ger) 6-7 (6-8) 6-4,6-2. Mens doubles final: Sandeep and Nitin

Indians involved in match-fixing NEW DELHI, Nov 6 (PTI) Former skipper Bishan Singh Bedi and player-turned-parliamentarian Kirti Azad have said Indian cricket was not free of match-fixing with the latter favouring a probe by a sitting Supreme Court judge into the allegations. The only way to sort out this problem is to initiate an inquiry headed by a sitting Supreme Court judge and decide once for all whether our cricketers are clean or not, former Test cricketer Kirti Azad said. Bedi said: If Pakistani cricketers are involved, I find it difficult to believe that Indian players are above it all. This is a disease of the 1990s and it needs to be rooted out before it reaches the new millennium. Their comments, as well as that of cricket administrator Sunil Dev, came during the course of a debate The Big Fight on Star News channel, a press release from NDTV said. Stressing the need for a panel on the lines of the one set up in Pakistan under Lahore High Court judge Malik Mohammad Qayyum to probe the issue in that country, Azad said he would raise the issue in the coming Lok Sabha session. If anyone has any evidence of match-fixing, they can place it before the commission, and then let the judge decide whether there is any truth to it, he said. Sunil Dev said: I am certain that some Indian cricketers have been involved in match-fixing and said he was ready to provide names if the government ordered a CBI probe, according to the release. Sunil Dev was manager of the Indian squad that toured South Africa in 1997. Both Bedi and Sunil Dev felt the assets of the players can be gone into as part of the investigations. What is wrong if the players are investigated? It is the only way the game can be cleaned, Bedi, the former left arm spin wizard, said. The three panellists felt the one-man probe committee, set up under former Chief Justice of India Y.V. Chandrachud to go into allegations of match-fixing in Indian cricket, had not served its purpose, the release said. How can you have a committee appointed by the board investigating allegations against itself and the players? We need a more impartial inquiry, Sunil Dev said. The Chandrachud panel,
which gave its report last year, had held that
allegations of match-fixing in Indian cricket were not
true. |
5-wicket haul by Navdeep LUDHIANA, Nov 6 Spinners Navdeep Singh (5 for 28) and Harbhajan Singh (3 for 63) helped Punjab skittle out Jammu and Kashmir for 171 in their first innings on the first day of the fourday North Zone Ranji Trophy league match at the Punjab Agricultural University ground here today. At draw of stumps, hosts Punjab in their first essay were 97 for 2. J and K skipper Kawaljeet Singh won the toss and opted to bat first. Despite an early jolt in the second over when Rajesh Gill was consumed by Reetinder Sodhi with just one run on the board, J and K were well placed at one stage 114 for 2. Ranjit Bali (37) was caught at point by Navdeep off Harbhajan Singh at the total 115. Kawaljeet Singh (47) departed two balls later at the same score. J and K lost three more wickets with the score reaching 127 but Ashwani Gupta and Vikrant Taggar stood the ground and thwarted Punjab bowlers. Ashwani contributed 40 runs and Vikrant scored 19. J and K were all out for 171 after 65.2 overs, just before the tea break. Punjab started their first innings on a disastrous note. They lost Reetinder Sodhi for a duck and Ravneet Ricky for five. Pardeep Bali bagged both the wickets. Punjab mounted a fine recovery and at close of play, Vikram Rathore and Pankaj Dharmani were at the crease with 43 and 47 runs, respectively. Advantage Amritraj THE return of Andre Agassi to the top of the ATP computer rankings is nothing short of extraordinary. About 20 months ago he was struggling in the rankings, somewhere at 140 his marriage to the lovely actress Brooke Shields was not going too well, he was not mentally focused in his tennis and had put on some extra weight which he didnt need. Then he went to work, showing a discipline that we really had not seen from him, he worked on every thing simultaneously. His trainer Gil Reyes put him on a strict diet and weight programme eating the right stuff and ruling out his favourite Burgers and fries. His practise session became more focussed with his coach Brad Gilbert. His tournament schedule was determined more carefully giving him enough time for practise, recovery and travel. He got into a much more disciplined routine and it slowly started to pay off. His talent was never in question. He has always had great ability and sees the ball off his opponents racket a lot sooner than most players. Sort of in the same mould as Connors or Borg who also had a magical return of serve. The only thing in question was whether he would be able to keep the incredible discipline and work ethic that it needed to stay the course to the top. And then it all started to really come together in the spring of 1999. He had quickly climbed back up the ATP rankings, but no ranking is good enough for a former Wimbledon champion unless youre in the top 10, at least and a real contender for a Grand Slam singles title. This rise to his eventual goal of No. I would come at a price and in April 99 he announced the separation from his wife Brooke Shields, just as he beat the German Boris Becker in the final of the ATP event in Hongkong. Even with the separation he continued his disciplined pursuit of the No. 1 ranking and Grand Slam title finally, the big break at the 99 French Open. Coming close to defeat early in the tournament, his work and mental toughness pulled out of trouble and put him in the final against Andre Medvedev who was also making comeback in his tennis life. In an amazing display of fitness, mental toughness, stroke production and will power, Agassi came back from two sets to love down to become the first American to win the French Open since Jim Courier and only the fifth man in history to win a career slam all the four major titles in a career. The work and sacrifice had paid off and one could see as he cried to accept the trophy what emotions he must have had as he stood there and what he must have gone through to get there. Once he won the French
Open he came to Wimbledon, as the favourite after the
grass court master Pete Sampras. The final between the
two Americans on the center court on the fourth of July
made it a perfect Independence Day celebration for the
USA. Though Sampras won, Agassi won something. Sampras
has never managed to get close to the French Open. He
continued his near-perfect shot making through the US
summer circuit which eventually brought him the US Open
title and the No. 1 ranking. He had been in the last
three Grand Slam finals winning two and achieving the
goal of No. 1 in the world. His work and discipline paid
off but you still need talent and the strong belief in
oneself to accomplish it. PMG |
PSEB annex soccer crown NABHA (Patiala), Nov 6 PSEB downed DFA, Kapurthala, 2-0 to annex the title in the 24th All-India Gurdarshan Memorial Football Tournament which concluded at the Ripudaman College grounds here today. It was a just reward for the Patiala powermen who after seven days of continuous soccer climaxed the 24th edition of this grade A tournament in an exciting manner in front of a packed holiday crowd, what with soccer fans coming from nearby districts in droves to witness the grand finale. The PSEB players could not have asked for a better Divali gift on the eve of the festival itself as they lay their hands on the coveted trophy for the sixth time, being runners up on five occasions. For DFA, Kapurthala, it was a case of the law of averages catching up with them as this scratch combination, comprising students of various colleges of the Doaba region, stunned everyone with their superb play which saw them winning four successive matches against much more formidable outfits, till they were given a rude shock by the powermen today. That there was huge gap between the professional PSEB outfit and the scratch Kapurthala combination was much in evidence in the first half itself as raid after raid, in which Pardeep and Deepak Kumar excelled, came to a naught against an almost impregnable PSEB defence. There was an unmistakable air of gaiety as soon as the proceedings begun in the first half in which the frontline of PSEB Gurdish and Sarabjit in particular, initiated most of the moves and exhibited excellent midfield command to keep a tab on the rivals attackers. Displaying one touch play, the powermen planned their moves with quick inter change of positions and through some crisp defence-splitting passes which had the Kapurthala goal tender Paramjit Singh under constant pressure. The Kapurthala boys started on a defensive note, but its defensive mechanism was so porous that the powermens striking pair of Ramesh Harjap had enough gaps to have a try at the goal where the rival custodian Paramjit warded off most of their moves. Towards the end of the first half the PSEB strikers were guilty of missing two successive sitters. Medio Sarabjit Singh lobbed the ball from the right flank into the box where striker Gurvinder Singh volleyed the ball home (1-0). In the second half, the Kapurthala boys never adhered to the basic principal of speed and skill which proved to be their undoing in the final analysis. On a couple of occasions they seemed to be recouping but ultimately their moves fizzled out more out of their own inexperience rather than any brilliant work by the powermens defence. Prominent among the Kapurthala defence was Mukhtiar Singh who thwarted some moves of the opponents with his quick clearances. Midway into the second
half, PSEB medio Dalip Singh rose to the occasion and
finding a stray ball off a mid-field scramble made his
way in the danger area and after body feigning the
Kapurthala custodian Paramjit, tapped the ball in the
back of the net to make it 2-0. |
Atwal stays joint fourth; Johl 12th KOTA KINABALU (Malaysia), Nov 6 (UNI) Indian professional Arjun Atwal carded two under par 70 to stay at the joint fourth slot while his compatriot Amandeep Johl shot a par 72 round to slip to the 12th place at the end of the third day of the $150,000 Sabah Masters Golf here today. American Robert Huxtable continued his superhuman performance as he reached 21 under par, after firing a third round five under 67 and opened a six stroke lead over Thailands Thongchai Jaidee. The lowest total on the Davidoff tour is 26 under par by Indias Jeev Milkha Singh in the Philip Morris Asia Cup in Korea in 1996. Huxtable will have a good chance to better that score in the final round. First round joint leader Arjun Atwal with a three round total of 11 under 205 (63,72,70) is sharing the fourth slot with Taku Yamanaka (Jpn), Lin Wen-Teng (Twn) and Greg Hanrahan (USA). Johl, who was placed ninth yesterday, slipped three place and with a total of seven under par 209 (66,71,72) was sharing the 12th position with four others Soe Kyaw Naing (Myn), Adrian Percy (Aus) Derek Fung (Hkg) and Scott Taylor (USA). Thongchai carded a 65, while defending champion Simon Yates of Scotland fired a 73 and is in third place on 12 under par. Overnight leader Huxtable started the day with a three-stroke lead over Yates, and ran away from the field with a front nine of five-under-par 31. The American, who won the Fila Open in Korea last year, then cemented his position at the top with three crucial par saves on 11, 12 and 13. He holed a 15 footer on the 11th, got up and down from 40 yards on the next, and then drained an eight footer on the 13th. Huxtables lead
could have been bigger if it had not been for a
double-bogey on the par three 15th where he found sand
twice. Rising star Thongchai also closed the gap with an
eagle on the 525-yard par-five 18th, where he hit a
driver and a massive five iron to six feet. |
Agassi outguns Philippoussis PARIS, Nov 6 (AFP) World number one Andre Agassi of the USA won his battle of wits with big-serving Australian Mark Philippoussis hands down at the $ 2.5-million Paris Open yesterday to storm into the semi-finals. Agassi, a title-winner here five years ago, was never challenged by the man nicknamed Scud as he tore through their quarter-final 6-4, 6-1 in just 65 minutes, even winning the ace count 9-8 as Philippoussis let himself down with seven double faults. Agassi now plays Ecuadors 11th seed Nicolas Lapentti, who ousted German 13th seed Tommy Haas 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 in his quarter-final face-off. Lapenttis win puts him in line for a place at the season-ending ATP Tour World Championship in Hanover later this month and also guarantees a place for world number three Pete Sampras, who joins Agassi, Yevgeny Kafelnikov and Gustavo Kuerten as confirmed entrants. It was a good day for another American as qualifier Michael Chang ousted French 15th seed Cedric Pioline to book a semi-final with Russian teen Marat Safin, who stopped another American, Jim Courier, in his tracks, winning 6-2, 6-4. Lone French survivor Pioline looked to have the match all sewn up after moving 3-1 ahead in the decider having already had a match point at 6-5 in the second set tiebreak. Chang, 27, seemed to find hidden reserves of energy as a leaping forehand handed him the initiative to go 5-4 ahead in the final set after an early break in his decider against Pioline, who had been 3-1 up and heading for the last four. Chang missed a set point in the 12th game but moved 4-1 clear in the tiebreak only for Pioline to force his way back into contention with four points on a roll. But the Frenchman missed his chance at match point with a return which dropped well wide and former world number two Chang wrapped up the set to level with a crosscourt effort which whizzed like lightning past his opponent. History if not the crowd was on Changs side given that he went into the encounter with a 6-1 advantage in their head-to-head battle going back seven years, the exception being an indoor clash at Stuttgart two years ago. Yet he made the main draw only after saving a match point in the qualifiers against Croatias Ivan Ljubicic. World number 34 Safin
reached the last four on his debut here as he won his
first ever Super 9 quarter-final against 39th-ranked
former world number one Courier. |

Jitender, Jasbir slam centuries GURGAON, Nov 6 (PTI) Openers Jitender Singh and Jasbir Singh cracked individual centuries in the first-wicket stand of 198 runs to put Haryana in a comfortable 266 for one on the opening day of the North Zone Ranji Trophy four-day league tie here today. Jitender remained unconquered on 117 while Jasbir (116) fell to Sachin Kulkarni after a splendid knock as both made merry of Services bowling with a vengeance following their yesterdays loss in the one-day encounter. Electing to bat on a placid wicket, Haryana openers justified the decision by compiling quick runs for a partnership of 198 runs at Nehru Stadium here. Jasbir completed his ton first before leg spinner Sachin Kulkarni gave Services their only success of the day when Pankaj Maitrey snapped the Haryana opener soon after tea interval. Services bowlers toiled hard to get another breakthrough but in vain as one down Parinder Sharma (batting 26) saw the day through for Haryana. Brief scores: Haryana 266 for
