Assumes office:
Mr Jagpal Singh Sandhu and Mr Kulbir Singh Sidhu have taken over as the new Divisional Commissioner and Deputy Commissioner, respectively, of the district, according to official information received here.

HOSHIARPUR
Boy released:
The son of a local cloth merchant, Rohit (8), who was abducted by some unidentified persons from the local Nai Abadi locality on Tuesday, was released in front of his aunt's house in the new Hari Nagar locality on Thursday.

Murder case solved: The local police has solved the murder case of Sital Singh of Akhlaspur village, whose body was found on June 18 in a farm. Karnail Singh, cousin of the deceased, has been arrested in this connection. The SSP, Mr R.P. Mittal, told newspersons here on Thursday that during investigation it was found that Karnail Singh had mixed poison in Sital Singh's food resulting in his death. Karnail Singh had confessed to his crime, he said.

MALERKOTLA
Eye camp:
The local Rotary Club organised a free eye camp at the Mandir Kali Devi dharamshala here recently. As many as 737 patients were examined and 97 operations were performed.

Office-bearers: The following have been elected office-bearers of the Atma Ram Seva Samiti, Dera Baba Atma Ram, Malerkotla: president — Mr Beant Kinger; vice-president — Mr Manoj Kumar; general secretary — Mr Rajesh Kumar; joint secretary — Mr Jaswinder Kumar ; and treasurer — Mr Parveen Jain.

MOGA
Persons rescued:
Three persons working on a tubewell in Jamailwala village under the Baghapurana police station in the district, who were reportedly buried alive under a mound near the tubewell were saved by passers-by after about three hours. According to a report reaching here on Thursday, the passers-by, who noticed the incident, immediately rushed to the spot and extricated all of them alive from under the mound.

Injured person dies: Chand Singh of Bhekha village under the Baghapurana police station in the district, who was seriously injured after he fell into a ditch on Wednesday, succumbed to his injuries at a hospital in Ludhiana on Thursday.

Book released:
Mr G.P.S. Sahi, Principal Secretary, Higher Education and Languages, released a book, "Adivaasi" in Punjabi, authored by Mrs Praveen Singhal, Head, Department of Human Biology, at the inaugural function of the week-long celebrations of the Department of Languages here.

PHILLAUR
Course on positive thinking:
A three-day course on positive thinking was organised at the local Punjab Police Academy, which concluded on Thursday. The course was inaugurated by Mr A.A. Siddiqui, Director of the academy. As many as 25 staff members of the academy attended the course. The course was organised by the local Brahma Kumari Ashram. Various aspects, like the process of self change, leadership, attitudes and behaviour, stress management, mind management and evolution of personality, were covered during the course.

Elected: The following have been elected office-bearers of the CSIO Club: Vice-President — Mr K.K. Khanna; General Secretary — Mr Vinay Kumar; Joint Secretary — Mr S.S. Mathur; Entertainment Secretary — Mr Gian Chand Rohani; Sport Secretary — Mr Inderjit Singh; and Library Secretary — Mr Jiwan Singh.

Dead: Ms Mehgiba, mother of Sant Asa Ram Ji Bapu, died at Delhi on Thursday. Her body was kept at the Sant Sri Asa Ram Ashram, New Delhi, and will be flown to Ahmedabad for last rites on Saturday.top

KURUKSHETRA
Suicide:
Sudesh Kumari residing at Gargi Hostel of Kurukshetra University on Thursday committed suicide by consuming some poisonous tablets. She was a student of MA(final), sociology.

SONEPAT
Oasis ’99:
Students of CR State College of Engineering, Murthal (Sonepat) won the first prize in 'mock taves' and the second prize in 'dumb charades' and photography (nature) in the five-day Oasis '99, one of the biggest cultural festivals of India, held at the Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani (Rajasthan), which concluded on Thursday.

Bail granted: Mohinder Khichi, an LPG dealer, was granted bail by a Judicial Magistrate at Gohana, 35 km from here, on Thursday. The dealer was arrested by the police for overcharging following a complaint by a consumer.

Pistol seized: The Ganaur police arrested a youth, Sunil, for allegedly being found in possession of a country-made pistol on Thursday. A case under the Indian Arms Act has been registered.

Case registered: The police has registered a case of dowry death against five members of the in-laws of a 20-year-old housewife, whose body was found hanging in her house at Aurangabad village in the district on Thursday.

Body found: The Kharkhauda police found the decomposed body of a 16-year-old youth on the premises of a cinema hall in the Kharkhauda town, 19 km from here, on Thursday.

Killed: Chhotu, alias Guddu (23) was knocked down and killed on the spot by a Haryana Roadways bus on the G.T. Road, 15 km from here, on Thursday. The victim belonged to Etawah in U.P. and was walking on the road when the mishap occurred. A case has been registered.

JAWALAMUKHI
Thieves held:
The police has arrested two thieves in the guise of sadhus at Kathog village, near here. They were caught red-handed by villagers when they tried to break open the shutter of a shop in the village. They are Netar Pal of Karnal and Pardeep of Sonepat.

KANGRA
Suicide:
Guddi Devi (36), a resident of Alampur near Lambagaon in the district, on Thursday committed suicide by hanging herself from the ceiling of a room in her house, according to the police. In another incident, Krishna Devi (28) allegedly committed suicide by consuming poison at Dharamsala on Wednesday.

Succumbs to injuries: Amit Kumar of Icchi village on Thursday succumbed to his injuries in the zonal hospital at Dharamsala. He was injured in a road accident on Wednesday.

SOLAN
Cassettes seized:
The police raided a shop selling video and audio cassettes in the Circular Road locality of the town on Thursday and seized 10 cassettes of blue films. The shop owner, Yoginder Kumar Arora, has been arrested. A case under Sections 292 and 293 of the IPC has been registered against him.

SUNDERNAGAR
Technical teachers' demand:
The HP Technical Teachers Association has urged the Chief Minister, Mr Prem Kumar Dhumal, to appoint a technocrat from within the Department of Technical Education as Director, Technical Education. In a press note issued here, the general secretary of the association, Mr R.S. Chandel, said the intricacies of the department could only be understood by a technocrat.
