BARNALA
Protest call
: Members of the Indian Medical Association, Barnala unit, have decided to hold a protest on Monday to express their resentment against the local police for allegedly forcing Dr Tirloki Nath, eye specialist, Civil Hospital, to withdraw a case filed against Tirath Dass Sindhwani.
Symposium
: Union Chemical and Fertilisers Minister Surjit Singh Barnala will inaugurate a symposium on June 6 hosted by the local Punjabi Sahit Sabha in league with the North Zone Cultural Centre, Patiala, at Lal Bahadur Shastri Arya Mahila College. He will also release "Khuli Akh Da Supna", a book of poetry written by Tarsem Anjan.

GURDASPUR
Liquor seized:
The Dinanagar police has arrested Jeetan Masih and Roop Lal, residents of Kotli Nangal, and seized illicit liquor from their possession. According to Mr Varinder Kumar, SSP, the liquor was being smuggled from Chhani Bela in Himachal Pradesh to Punjab. A case under Sections 61, 1 and 14 of the IPC has been registered.

HOSHIARPUR
Two held:
The Mahilpur police has arrested Paramjit Singh, alias Bunka, a resident of Kiran Joa village, and seized 3 kg poppy husk from his possession, according to a press note of the police on Saturday. The police also arrested Charno of Khanpur village and seized 14 kg poppy husk from her possession.

MOGA
Water shortage:
Residents of many villages falling under Baghapurana police station in this district complained on Sunday against the shortage of water for past two months. They said water reservoirs in these villages had not been filled for months together because of failure of the water supply system. They also complaint that motors installed in these village had not been repaired.

PHAGWARA
Three injured
: Tension mounted in nearby Hadiabad on Saturday when a group of miscreants attacked and injured Narinder, Ramesh and Lekhraj who were later hospitalised. An old enmity was said to be behind the incident.

PHILLAUR
Course:
A six-day course on "Police practical work and police rules" organised at PPA, Phillaur, was concluded on Saturday. The course was designed by Mr A.A. Siddique, ADGP-cum-Director, PPA, Phillaur. He expressed the need to reorient the police officers towards normal policing in the state and to acquaint them with the latest changes in the law relating to the practical work.

SAMRALA
Visited:
Mr Harbans Singh Saluja, Additional Superintending Engineer, PSEB, Samrala division, on Saturday visited Dhindsa, Majali Kalan, Mutton, Shamspur and Diwala villages and hear the problems of farmers. He advised them not to run the tubewell during single phase power supply.

AMBALA
Case registered
: The police has registered a case under Section 302 of the IPC against four persons, Gurpal, Pankaj, Surendra, and Makhan, on a charge of murdering Randeep in the cantonment on Friday. The car used by the suspects has also been impounded.

BHIWANI
One held:
The police has arrested Sunder of Bond Kalan village and produced him in a local court. Disclosing this here on Saturday, Mr S.S. Deswal, SP, told mediapersons that Sunder had murdered his brother, Narender Kalli (14) on December 2, 1997, and Krishan Kumar of the same village on May 4, 1999. During interrogation he admitted that Ashok Kumar of Ranila village was also murdered by him on May 7, 1999. Mr Deswal said the police had launched a manhunt to arrest other accused.

FATEHABAD
In-laws booked:
Ram Murthi, wife of Krishan Kumar, a resident of Dhani Thoba village in this district, allegedly committed suicide along with her daughter, Mukesh, on Friday. The SP, Mr Rajbir Deswal, said the police had registered a case under Sections 306 and 34 of the IPC against her husband, father-in-law and mother-in-law on a complaint of her father.

HISAR
BJP rally
: The state unit of the BJP will organise a rally at Barwala, 30 km from here, on Monday, according to Mr Rakesh Sethi, senior vice- president of the youth wing. Mr Sethi claimed that the party was likely to contest the next assembly elections in the state on its own.

JIND
Power theft:
Officers of the Vigilance Bureau of the Haryana Vidyut Parsaran Nigam conducted a raid on a paper factory on the local Hansi road and detected power theft. According to Mr Tarun Bajaj, Deputy Commissioner, the HVPN imposed a fine on the owner of the factory and a case has been registered against him. The bureau also raided another factory at the local Bhiwani road and imposed a fine of Rs 2.25 lakh.

KURUKSHETRA
Symposium:
Chaudhary Charan Singh Haryana Agriculture University, Krishi Gyan Vigyan Kendra and the Department of Agriculture, Kurukshetra, in collaboration with Agri Evo Limited, organised a district-level symposium on 'Integrated Insect-Pest and Disease Management (IPM) in Paddy' at Panchayat Bhavan here on Friday. As many as 200 farmers, including agriculture officers and scientists participated in the programme.

REWARI
One killed
: Vijay was killed when he was allegedly attacked by members of a family on Saturday. His two brothers, Fauji and Badah, were also injured and admitted to Medical College and Hospital, Rohtak. However, two other family members of the opposite faction were also admitted to the hospital. The local Balmiki Samaj has demanded immediate arrest of the assailants.

SIRSA
Lok Adalat:
As many as 162 cases were settled in a district-level Lok Adalat held at the local judicial complex on Saturday under the chairmanship of Ms Nirmal Yadav, District and Sessions Judge.
Two arrested: The police arrested two persons on Saturday for allegedly attempting to rob a cloth merchant in Bhadra Bazaar on Friday. Two foreign made pistols were recovered from their possession. They were identified as Bachan Singh of Ferozabad and Bhajan Singh of Nagrana Thehar village. The third, Gurdev, is still absconding.
Four booked: The district police booked Gurmej Singh, Satbeer, Surjeet Kaur and Rani on Saturday under Sections 323, 506 and 34, IPC, on a complaint of Jagtar Singh of Farmai Khurd village in the district. He alleged that his sister was beaten and threatened by them. The police is investigating the matter.
Suicide: Gurpreet (16) of Taruana village in district committed suicide by consuming poison on Saturday.

YAMUNANAGAR
Postponed:
The Haryana Krishik Samaj has postponed its demonstration which is to be held on Monday in front of the Prime Minister's house at Delhi, according to Mr Sat Paul Kaushik, President of the samaj, Yamunanagar district.
Seminar:
Mr Naseem Ahmed, Commissioner and Secretary Agriculture, Haryana, called upon the scientists to focus their efforts in finding new varieties of sugarcane which gives high yield. He said this while addressing a state-level seminar on "Management of early variety of sugarcane", which was organised at Sarswati Sugar mill here on Saturday. The seminar was attended by managing director and senior executives of sugar industry of Haryana, UP and Punjab.

CHAMBA
Medical association:
In a press note issued here on Sunday, the Himachal Medical Officers Association demanded from the state Government to release the higher qualification, academic and conveyance allowance as had been granted to PCMS doctors. However, the following have been elected office-bearers of the Himachal Medical Officers Association, Chamba unit: President- Dr R.P.Kaushal; Secretary - Dr Ram Kamal; and Treasurer - Dr Subhash Chauhan.

HAMIRPUR
Environment day:
Save Environment Day was celebrated here on Sunday with great enthusiasm. Mr Kamlesh Kumar Pant, Deputy Commissioner, along with the district officers and members of the local Hamirpur Nagar Palika Parishad cleaned the roads and removed polythene bags from the drains of the town.

KULU
Six held:
Six persons were arrested in three different places in this district on Friday. Martin Frahz Kenel, a Swiss national, was held at Kalag village, 50 km from here, on a charge of possessing 1 kg charas. A case was registered against him. In second incident, a French national, Claude Yves Francios, was arrested in the same village on a charge of possessing 250 grams of charas. In third incident, the police arrested four persons, Yossi Mier, Behi, Israeli nationals, Omer Pehziani, an Iranian. and Nikolai Singh, an Indian, under the NDPS Act.

MANDI
Committee:
Mr Maheshwar Singh, MP, Mr Avninder Singh, municipal councillor, Mr Birbal Sharma, and Mr Kishori Lal, have been nominated members of the Himachal Pradesh Telephone Advisory Committee by the Department of Telecommunication, New Delhi.

SHIMLA
Invited:
Mr Ashok Sharma, a former member-secretary of the State Pollution Control Board, has been invited by the Thailand-based Asian Institute of Technology to deliver a lecture on "Cleantech", which is the environment theme of the conference. The conference will be held at Bangkok from November 8 to 12.
Flayed: The reported move of the Centre to wind up the special services bureau (SSB) set up at five places in Himachal has been criticised by Mr Shan Mohammad, a Congress leader. In a statement issued here on Saturday, he said there had been a resentment among residents of the areas over the move to close down the SSB centres at Rampur, Shimla, Kangra, Mandi and Kulu. The centres provide medical and veterinary services to the people of these areas.
