Consumer Courts
HUDA to compensate consumer
Tribune News Service

PANCHKULA, May 22 — The local consumer court has penalised the Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA) for allotting a plot of “odd dimensions” to a consumer and then not offering an alternative plot to her in Sector 14 of Hisar.

Holding it responsible for deficiency in services, HUDA has been directed to allot an alternative plot in the same sector within two months. The consumer has been awarded a compensation of Rs 5000 for harassment.

The order was passed by the District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum on a complaint filed by Ms Sudarshan Devi. She alleged that she was informed through a letter dated August 20,1986, about the allotment of a plot measuring 292.65 sq metres. The possession of the plot was offered on November 12, 1997.

When the complainant went to the office concerned, she came to know that the plot was not of the standard dimension as had been intimated in the possession letter. All installments towards the costs of the plot had been paid, she said. Repeated requests for allotment of an alternative plot yielded no results, she added.

HUDA, in its reply, said the layout and demarcation plan of the sector was prepared by DTP as per the area available and the dimension of each plot in a block cannot be equal because the land was mostly increased or decreased in the corner plots.

The forum observed that HUDA had admitted offering plot of “odd dimensions” on which proper construction could not be raised. Again the requests of the complainant for an alternative plot in the same sector were futile, amounting to deficiency in services.

The consumer has been allowed Rs 1000 as costs of the proceedings.Back

Price Watch
Bittergourd, beans costlier
Tribune News Service

CHANDIGARH, May 22 — The prices of bittergourd and beans have recorded an increase during the past two days. The prices of most of the other vegetables have remained stable.

A kg of bittergourd, priced at Rs 16 two days back, was available for Rs 20 today. The wholesale price of the vegetable also increased from Rs 60 to Rs 75 per five kg. According to traders, the prices had increased as plucking activity remained hampered in parts of Punjab and Haryana, from where the vegetable was coming these days, due to inclement weather.

Similarly, if beans were priced at Rs 20 a kg two days back, they could be purchased for Rs 24 today. The wholesale price of the commodity increased from Rs 80 to Rs 100 per five kg during this period. According to traders, the increase was a result of less supplies from Himachal Pradesh.

The case of brinjal was no different. If a kg of the vegetable was available for Rs 12 a kg two days back, it could be bought for Rs 16 today. The wholesale price of the vegetable increased from Rs 45 to Rs 60 per five kg.

Likewise, garlic became costly during this period. A kg of the vegetable, priced at between Rs 24 and Rs 28 two days back, was available for Rs 32 a kg today. The wholesale price of the vegetable went up from Rs 100 to Rs 130 per five kg.

On the other hand, most of vegetable prices witnessed no fluctuation. Capsicum and peas were priced at Rs 24 and Rs 40, respectively. Cauliflower was available for Rs 16 a kg and gourd for Rs 10. Cabbage and squashgourd could be purchased for Rs 12 and Rs 16, respectively.

Cucumber was priced at Rs 6 and tomato at Rs 8 a kg today. Lady's finger was stable at Rs 20 a kg. Similarly, there was no change in the prices of onion and potato, which were available for Rs 8 and Rs 5 a kg.Back
