AMRITSAR
Elected :
The following have been elected office-bearers of the District Sales Tax Bar Association: President — Mr B.M.Uppal; Vice-President- Mr Naveen Rattan; Secretary - Mr Balbir Kumar; and Joint Secretary - Mr Om Parkash Sharma.

Award: Dr Jatinderpal Singh Jolly, a lecturer in Punjabi at Guru Nanak Dev University and Ilias Ghuman, Editor and a writer from Pakistan, have been selected for the Punjab Sanjh award by the J.S.Chauhan Punjabi Sahit Trust, according to Mr Asif Shahkar, president of the trust. He said the award would be presented on May 16 at London.

Election: The election of the Guru Nanak Dev University Officers Association will be held on June 11, according to Mr G.P. Arora, Secretary of the association. Dr Kashmir, Singh, Head, Department of Law, will be the Returning Officer for the election.

FEROZEPORE
Award:
Mr Anirudh Gupta, Chief Coordinator, DCM Group of Schools, will receive the National Education Excellence award at a seminar to be held at New Delhi on May 25. The award will be given by the Indian Economic Development and Research Association in recognition of his service in the field of education.

Threat: The local unit of the Senior Citizens Welfare Association has threatened to hold demonstrations in case the Punjab Government failed to issue notification regarding the Rent Control Act. The association in a press note issued here on Friday, demanded immediate release of the notification.

JALANDHAR
Two cars stolen:
Two cars were reportedly stolen in the city on May 12. Mr Gursharan Singh, a resident of Phagwara Gate, said his Maruti car (DL-3C-6624) was stolen from his house. The second Maruti car (PB-08-270) of Mr Rajesh Kumar was stolen from Devi Talab Mandir. The police has registered cases.

Association: The following have been elected office-bearers of the Punjab Government Pensioners Welfare Association : President - Mr Achhar Singh; Senior Vice-President - Mr M.L.Sharma; General Secretary - Mr M.L. Agnish; Joint Vice-President - Mr Gulshan Lal; and Treasurer - Mr Manohar Singh.

Agitation: A meeting of the Punjab State Veterinary Officers Association was held here on Friday and decided to participate in a dharna at Chandigarh in front of the office of the Director, Animal Husbandry, Punjab, on May 25 in protest against the non-acceptance of its demands.

LUDHIANA
Visit:
Dr Nicole Brunet, Senior Research Officer, International Service for National Agriculture Research (ISNAR), Netherlands, visited Punjab Agricultural University on Friday. She met Dr G.S.Kalkat, Vice-Chancellor, and shown keen interest in the communication model developed by the Communication Centre of the university. She emphasised the efforts of the university towards agricultural research and management.

Legal cell: Mr Gursimarjit Singh Manshahia, advocate, has been appointed Vice-Chairman of the legal cell of the Punjab Pradesh Youth Congress. This was announced here on Friday by Mr Davinder Singh Babbu, President of the Punjab Youth Congress.

Appointed: Dr Ashok Mehta, Associate Director, Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Gurdaspur, was appointed Zonal Coordinator of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research at Punjab Agricultural University on Friday.

MUKTSAR
Two arrested:
The district police arrested Sat Pal and Gurtej Singh on Wednesday for allegedly looting a petrol station at Malout on May 3. The police seized a gun from Sat Pal and a revolver from Gurtej Singh. A case under the Sections 307 and 34 of, IPC, and Section 25 of the Arms Act was registered against them.

Inaugurated:
Mr Anirudh Tiwari, Deputy Commissioner, Sangrur, inaugurated Sai Saraswati Vidya Mandir, a free education primary school at Sai Dham, near Bhakra Canal, here. Prominent among the dignitaries were Mr V.K. Kapoor, Mr R.P. Bibra, Malkiat Singh, Mukandi Lal, Dr Prabh Dayal and Mr B.D. Sharma, coordinator of school managing committee.

Dinner hosted: The Central Government Employees Welfare Co-ordination Committee hosted a dinner in honour of Lieut-Gen B.K.N. Chibber (retd), Administrator, UT, and Governor, Punjab, at the Chandigarh Club on Saturday. Brigadier K. S. Khatri, Secretary of the committee, thanked him for allotting land for the construction of dwelling units in Chandigarh.

Pollution camp: The Build India Group and the UT Environment Department organised a joint pollution camp near Shiv Mandir, Sector 19, on Saturday. Both two and four wheelers were checked, certificates were issued and the services of a mechanic were provided free of charge, according to a press note issued by Ms Meenakshi Saxena, the President of the group.

Office-bearers: The following have been elected office-bearers of the Welfare Association Water Works Complex, Sector 26: President — Mr Didar Singh Sandhu; Senior Vice-President — Mr Maan Singh; General Secretary — Mr Nirmal Singh; and Joint Secretary — Mr Sukhdev Pal Singh.

Programme: Students of Shivalik Public School will present a cultural programme of harvest songs and dances at the World Roma festival, to be held in Norway in September. The Principal of the school, Mr D.S. Bedi, said free education, boarding and lodging facilities would be given to Roma children, the gypsies of Europe, from next year.

Criticised: The Bharatiya Janata Party and the Shiromani Akali Dal have criticised Mr Raghbir Lal Arora, councillor, for instigating the public against the authority of the corporation. The corporation had passed a resolution to remove encroachments on public land but Mr Arora had obstructed its staff from carrying out its duty.

Student elections: The students of classes VI to X in Government Model High School, Sector 28, have elected Sneh Sharma "Girl Prefect" and Simranpal Singh and Sumit Goel "Boys Prefect".

Medication camp:
A medication camp was held at Yadavindra Public School, SAS Nagar, from May 1 to 12. The local branch of the State Bank of Patiala organised the camp, in which 120 students participated.

ROHTAK
Cases solved:
The district police claims to have seized theft property worth Rs 3.39 lakh by solving 11 cases of theft during the last month. In a press note issued here on Friday the police said as many as six murder, two robbery, one dacoity, 16 snatching and 25 theft cases were registered during the period. He said 20 cases under the Excise Act and six under the Arms Act were registered.

Relief for victims: Mr Anil Kumar, Deputy Commissioner, and Chairman of the District Red Cross Society, has despatched 200 blankets to tremor affected people of Chamoli on behalf of the society. He said the Bharat Vikas Parishad, Meham, had already sent a wheat bags to the affected families.

Mill sealed: The District Food and Supplies Department sealed a flour mill on Friday at Kiloi village, near here, for allegedly running the mill without licence. A case under the Sections 7, 10 and 55 of the Essential Commodities Act has been registered against the mill owner. The police has arrested his son, Mukesh, for interrogation.

Urged: Mr Sushil Saini, district president of the Janata Dal, had condemned the alleged police atrocity committed against women belonging to a particular community at Rewari recently. In a statement here on Friday, he demanded action against the culprits.

Sentenced:
Dr Abdul Mazid, Magistrate, awarded three years imprisonment and a fine of Rs 9,000 to Hazari Lal of Balasar village in the district on Thursday for injuring and threatening his elder brother, Kanshi Ram.

Poppy seized: Hardev Singh of Mulewala village in Sangrur district was arrested on Friday by the Dabwali police on a charge of smuggling poppy husk. The police seized 10 kg of poppy from his possession. A criminal case under the Sections 15, 16, 61, 85 of the NDPS Act has been registered against him.

Suicide: Prabhu Ram (50) of Nathusari Chopta village in this district allegedly committed suicide by consuming poison on Friday.

Succumb to injuries: Ram Vashist (35), a local resident, succumbed to his injuries at the local Civil Hospital on Friady. According to sources, he was under depression and allegedly burnt himself by sprinkling kerosene on his body three days back.

KULU
No parking areas:
The District Magistrate, Kulu, has notified the no parking areas for vehicles in Manali. In a press note issued here on Friday, the national highway from Bombay Kothi to Beas Bridge, Rambagh Chowk to Hidimba Temple and Manalsu Bridge have been declared as no parking zone.

PALAMPUR
Killed:
Vijay (32), a khoka owner of Dharamsala, was killed in a tragic accident on Thursday. According to the police, Vijay fell down from a hillside near Sidhbari Cooperative Tea Factory. His body was found on Friday. The police has registered a case after post-mortem.

SHIMLA
Funds allocated:
Mr Ramesh Chand, Irrigation and Public Health Minister, said here on Friday that Rs 2.14 crore had been allocated to the Deputy Commissioners for installing 426 hand pumps in the state. He said water would also be supplied through tankers at places where hand pump could not be installed and for this Rs 2.20 crore has been provided. The Irrigation Department has provided additional Rs 3.75 crore for installation of hand pump and rigs.
