CHANDIGARH, May 15 It was a get-together of under-10 footballers, their parents, coaches and the Principal at the first anniversary of the first-ever football academy for children below 10 started by the St Stephens School here. The academy has 25 children on the rolls. Two coaches Bhupinder Singh and Surinder Singh have a big task as the children are below 10 years of age. According to Principal Harold Carver this is the best age for the football nursery. A special academy bus picks up the students and drops them back to school, where teachers brush them up with the homework. The parents listened as Principal Carver talked about the massive expenditure going into the academy. But then all this was going into producing good footballers. He said his dream was to see one of the young trainees donning India colours. A total of Rs 8.47 lakh had gone into the academy in the first year. This included the cost of a special academy bus, special an diet, kit and coaching classes. He lamented that there was no football tournament for this age-group. But this year the school proposed to start a tournament in this age group. He was all for giving the youngsters competition with older children of the same school. The young players occupied the back seats while their parents were all attention as Principal Carver stressed on the academic side saying all the players were being helped by the teachers in the homework. He wanted the children to become robust as football was for the sturdy. Any problems, Mr Carver asked the parents. It has been a wonderful experience. You have a very dedicated coach, said Dr A.K. Chopra, one of the parents. Very encouraging indeed. I am ready to present a running trophy, said Col Patheja, another parent. There were rounds of applause as another parent said There are no problems. Another round of applause went up as the Principal said special football boots for the 10-year-olds would be imported from Thailand. Coach Bhupinder Singh said it was a tough task as there were many detractors who said It will not last for more than three months. But the enthusiasm shown by the youngsters as also the parents and the guidance of the Principal had shown how well the nursery had completed one year. Give our children rest for the holidays. Yes, agreed the coach and said they definitely needed rest. The academy would resume after a the summer break on June 21. One of the former school students, Jaideep who represented India in the Youth Football for the under 19, at Korea, was at hand to give the youngsters the boost.
