Scooter, Rs 5,000 stolen from market

CHANDIGARH, May 15 — A scooter and Rs 5,000 in cash were stolen from the furniture market in Sector 52. Mr Bhagwan Dass of Sector 32 alleged that his scooter (CH-01-E-3810) and the cash were stolen from the market. A case under Section 379 of the IPC has been registered.

Child injured: A child, Vicky, of Colony Number 4, was hit by a motorcycle (HR-33-A-0069) in Industrial Area. The vehicle sped away. The injured child was admitted to the General Hospital, Sector 16.

Three arrested: A resident of Kurukshetra, Dinesh Kumar Mittal, was arrested from Sector 31 while carrying 150 pouches of country-made liquor. A case under the Excise Act has been registered. Meanwhile, Inder Singh Negi of Dadu Majra village and Ram Lal of Sector 27, have been arrested for gambling at a public place in Sector 17. A case under the Gambling Act has been registered.

Harassed: A woman of Sector 27 has alleged that she was being harassed and maltreated by her husband and in-laws for bringing insufficient dowry. Ms Indu Arora has alleged that Gopal Krishan, Shiv Dayal and Rajni, all of Subzi Mandi, Delhi, used to harass her for bringing inadequate dowry. A case under Sections 406 and 498-A of the IPC has been registered against the accused.

LALRU

One dead in accident: A local resident died in a collision between a truck and a scooter near Government Senior Secondary School, Lalru.

According to sources, the truck (RSA-4335), hit the scooter (HR-05-TP-6064) which resulted in the death of the scooterist, Mr Salinder Singh, a 22-year-old man. The police has registered a case against the truck driver.

PANCHKULA

Case solved: With the arrest of Karam Singh, a resident of Alipur village, the Pinjore police has solved the case of a stolen tractor from the HMT factory, Pinjore. According to the police sources, the tractor belonged to the Chaudhry Transport. The accused is alleged to have stolen the tractor on the night of May 11.

Meanwhile, police has registered a case under Section 379 of the IPC.Back

Cabbage price rises

CHANDIGARH, May 15 — While the price of cabbage has increased a number of commonly used vegetables have become cheaper in the local market during the past two days.

During a survey of the local market today it was found that a kg of cabbage, priced at Rs 6 just two days back, was available today for Rs 10. The wholesale price of the vegetable has risen from Rs 25 to Rs 35 per five kg. The hike was attributed to lesser supplies from Himachal Pradesh.

Similarly, the price of beans has gone up during this period. A kg of the vegetable, priced at Rs 12 two days back, was available today for Rs 20 in different parts of the city. The wholesale price of the vegetable has increased from Rs 50 to Rs 80 for five kg during this period. The traders said the during the past two days the arrivals were less from Saharanpur and certain parts of Himachal Pradesh which have been the main source of the crop in the absence of local varieties in the market.

On the other hand, the prices of a number of vegetables have witnessed a dip during this period. A kg of brinjal, which was available for Rs 14 a few days back, was priced at Rs 10 today in different city markets. The wholesale price of the vegetable has come down from Rs 55 to Rs 40 per five kg during this period. According to traders, the fall was due to enhanced arrivals from different parts of Punjab and surrounding areas of the city.

The same was the case with lemon, as its price has come down from Rs 30 a kg to Rs 20 to Rs 24 in different city markets. The wholesale price of the vegetable has come down from Rs 125 to Rs 80 per five kg. The fall was owing to less demand due to the changed weather and due to increasing arrivals in the market.

Similarly, the price of sqashgourd has come down from Rs 20 to Rs 15 a kg during this period. The wholesale price of the commodity has dipped from Rs 80 to Rs 60 per five kg during this period. Similarly, the price of capsicum has fallen from Rs 30 to Rs 24 a kg during this period. The wholesale price of the vegetable has come down from Rs 125 to Rs 100 per five kg.

On the other hand there were vegetables, the prices of which remained unchanged during this period. If a kg of cauliflower was priced at Rs 16 a kg it was still available at the old price. Similarly, peas were still available for Rs 40 a kg and gourd at Rs 10 a kg. A kg of cucumber and tomato was also available at the old prices of Rs 6 a kg.

On the other hand, if a kg of ginger was priced at Rs 50 a kg two days back, it was available for Rs 60 a kg, while the price of a kg of garlic has increased from Rs 20 to Rs 32 a kg. The same quantity of onion and potato was available at Rs 8 and Rs 4 a kg , respectively.Back



 


Under-10 footballers, parents get together

CHANDIGARH, May 15 — It was a get-together of under-10 footballers, their parents, coaches and the Principal at the first anniversary of the first-ever football academy for children below 10 started by the St Stephen’s School here.

The academy has 25 children on the rolls. Two coaches — Bhupinder Singh and Surinder Singh have a big task as the children are below 10 years of age. According to Principal Harold Carver this is the best age for the football nursery. A special academy bus picks up the students and drops them back to school, where teachers brush them up with the homework.

The parents listened as Principal Carver talked about the massive expenditure going into the academy. But then all this was going into producing good footballers. He said his dream was to see one of the young trainees donning India colours. A total of Rs 8.47 lakh had gone into the academy in the first year. This included the cost of a special academy bus, special an diet, kit and coaching classes.

He lamented that there was no football tournament for this age-group. But this year the school proposed to start a tournament in this age group. He was all for giving the youngsters competition with older children of the same school.

The young players occupied the back seats while their parents were all attention as Principal Carver stressed on the academic side saying all the players were being helped by the teachers in the homework. He wanted the children to become robust as football was for the sturdy.

“Any problems”, Mr Carver asked the parents.

“It has been a wonderful experience. You have a very dedicated coach”, said Dr A.K. Chopra, one of the parents.

“Very encouraging indeed. I am ready to present a running trophy”, said Col Patheja, another parent.

There were rounds of applause as another parent said “There are no problems”.

Another round of applause went up as the Principal said special football boots for the 10-year-olds would be imported from Thailand.

Coach Bhupinder Singh said it was a tough task as there were many detractors who said “It will not last for more than three months”. But the enthusiasm shown by the youngsters as also the parents and the guidance of the Principal had shown how well the nursery had completed one year.

Give our children rest for the holidays”. “Yes”, agreed the coach and said they definitely needed rest. The academy would resume after a the summer break on June 21.

One of the former school students, Jaideep who represented India in the Youth Football for the under 19, at Korea, was at hand to give the youngsters the boost. Back

POA grant for former Asiad star

CHANDIGARH, May 15 —The Punjab Olympic Association (POA) has sanctioned a grant of Rs 21,000 for former international athlete Parduman Singh. Winner of two gold medals in shot put and discus throw in the 1954 Manila Asian Games, Parduman Singh, now 72 years old, after suffering a paralytic attack, is living in his home village Bhagta Bhai in Ferozepore district.

After his triumph at the Manila Asian Games, Parduman Singh repeated his medal-winning feat in the 1958 Asian Games at Tokyo. Parduman, later captained the national squad in the 1962 Jakarta Asian Games where he won a silver medal in discus throw.

Hearing of his present plight, the President of the Punjab Olympic Association, Mr Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa, sanctioned Rs 21,000 for Parduman, according to Mr Arvind Khanna, Secretary-General of the POA. This gesture of goodwill impelled other sports associations to follow suit and offer financial assistance to the former Indian athletics star.

Mr K.S. Kang, President of the Punjab Archery Association, has sanctioned Rs 11,000 while Mr Kulbir Singh Sandhu, President of the Ropar District Olympic Association, has sanctioned Rs 21,000. Mr S.J.S. Grewal, President of the Punjab Cycling Association, has contributed Rs 5,000 for Parduman Singh.

The Punjab Government has also not lagged behind. The Punjab State Sports Council has sanctioned a monthly pension of Rs 600 for Parduman Singh from January last.

The matter has also been taken up by the President of the POA with the Department of Sports of the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development for conferring Arjuna Award, besides sanctioning a suitable amount of pension, under the existing scheme, to help such sportspersons.

FCI Club win

Fine batting performance by Sumit Walia, who scored 90, and good bowling by Pouras (4 for 25) helped FCI Cricket Club to beat Canara Bank in the last match of the league round of the Chandigarh League-cum-Knockout Cricket Tournament.

The FCI won the toss and scored 176 runs in the stipulated overs. Sumit Walia (90) and Rakesh Kumar (67) scored 145 runs for the first wicket. Chasing the total, Canara Bank were bundled out for 109 runs.

Brief scores: FCI Cricket Club: 176 runs for 3 wkts, (Sumit Walia 90, Rakesh 67) Canara Bank: 109 runs all out (Charan Dass 54, Sanjeev Sekri 18, Pouras 4 for 25, Rakesh 3 for 19).

In another match, Piccadily XI got a walkover against A-One Club.

The State Bank of India 'B' and the Punjab and Sind Bank sailed into the pre-quarter finals in the team championship of the State Bank of Patiala Inter-Bank Table Tennis Tournament being played at the Reserve Bank of India, Recreation Club, here.

In the first match, the State Bank of India 'B' beat Allahabad Bank 3-0. K.K Trikha played a stellar role by winning both singles matches. He outclassed Sandeep Garg of Allahabad Bank 21-16, 21-9 and then outwitted Ramesh Lal 21-15, 21-12. In the third match, C.S. Kaler rapped up the tie, defeating Ramesh Lal, 21-12, 21-7.

In another match, the Punjab & Sind Bank beat the Oriental Bank of Commerce 3-0. Sunil Manchanda beat Jatinder Veer 21-13, 21-19. Then J.P.S. Grover beat Sanjeev Jain 21-9 20-22, 21-12 while in the third match, Jatinder Bhalla beat T.K Datta 23-21, 19-21, 25-23.

Titles for city boys

Tushar Liberhan of Chandigarh won the boys under-14 singles title in the Adidas Junior Circuit Tennis Tournament which concluded at Delhi yesterday. He beat Wrik Ganguly of Delhi 6-1, 6-0. In the boys under-16 section, Amanjot Singh of Chandigarh beat C.S. Mohanti of Delhi 7-6 (7-3), 6-3.Back
