KAPURTHALA
Run over:
Charanjit Singh (52), a technician in Rail Coach Factory, Hussainpur, was run over by a goods train near the coach factory on Friday. In another incident, Sada Singh (45), a Subedar in Indian Army, died of electrocution in Lakhan Ke Padde village on Friday. The police has registered cases in both the incidents.

PHAGWARA
Mishap: Five pilgrims, including three boys and a girl, died and three others were injured when the tractor they were travelling in overturned on the Garhshankar-Anandpur Sahib road on Friday.

Nominated: Mr Randhir Singh, District President of the Indian National Lok Dal, in a statement issued on Sunday, said Mr Rohit Mehal had been nominated the President of the city youth wing of the party.

Sammelan: Yogi Bachan Nath Bachan delivered religious discourse on the third day of the 69th Harinam Sankirtan Sammelan which started in Sector 20, Chandigarh, last Friday. Free medicines for diabetes were being given to patients at the sammelan, said Mr M.L. Saini, an organiser.top

KAITHAL
Bodies extricated:
Bodies of the two labourers, who were buried under the debris of a collapsed wall of a tubewell at the Dasherpur village in Guhla subdivision, were extricated after four days here on Friday. The deceased — Bagga and Ranjha — went down in a 60 ft deep tubewell pit to repair a electric motor on Tuesday, but were buried under as a kucha wall caved in. The Deputy Commissioner, Ms Jaiwanti Sheokand, has announced an ex-gratia of Rs 70,000 each for the next of kin of the deceased labourers.

Animals ill: According to reports received from some villages of Guhla subdivision, a number of animals have fallen ill after consuming water from a drain passing through or in the vicinity of these villages. It is reported that the drain carries water released by some industrial units which is untreated and contains chemicals. There is resentment among villagers against non-action by the state's pollution control board. Kharkan, Polar, Andli, Kharak, Pissol, Chakuladana are some of the worst affected villages.

SHAHABAD
Freedom fighter dead:
A veteran freedom fighter and former Member of Parliament, Dr V K Satyavadi (95), died after prolonged illness here on Saturday. He was cremated with state honours on Sunday. The SDM, Mr Lajvir Singh, laid a wreath on the body on behalf of the state government and district administration on the body.

SIRSA
Dead:
Diwan Chand Narang (65), father-in-law of Ramesh Chawla, arhtiya of new mandi here, died here on Friday. Diwan Chand went into coma after hearing news of the death of Ramesh Chawla on Thursday. It may be recalled that Ramesh Chawla committed suicide by jumping before a passenger train on Tuesday last and his daughter Sunita (15) also died after receiving information of death of her father on the same day. A criminal case has been registered against five persons under Sections 306/34, IPC on a complaint by Rajinder Kumar, partner of deceased, in which he alleged that all five accused, including Vice-Chairman of Market Committee, Sirsa were responsible for death of Ramesh Chawla. All five have absconded.

Held: A police party headed by ASI Jagdish Rai arrested Sukhdev Singh, alias Mukha, alias Mukhtiar Singh of Nigarana village near here on Saturday on charges of stealing vehicles. The accused had been stealing vehicles for the past several months. Mr B S Sandhu, SSP, said that a scooter had been recovered from his possession which was stolen on November 18,1998. The arrested accused was remanded to police custody.

Arrested: Dr Diwan Chand Mehta of Talwara Khurd village in the district was arrested by the Ellenabad police on Friday on a charge of beating Parveen Rani on April 26 last. A criminal case under Sections 447, 324, 326, IPC, was registered against accused on April 27 on a complaint lodged by Madan Lal, husband of Parveen, in which it was alleged that his wife was seriously injured by the accused.

Dead: Khivali Ram (40), a farmer of Ram Nagria village in the district, died at local Civil Hospital on Friday. According to sources he had fallen in the fields while spraying his crops and had gone into coma due to scorching heat.

Red Cross Day: The World Red Cross Day was celebrated here on Saturday. A blood donation camp was also organised at local Deaf and Dumb centre in collaboration with the Nehru Yuva Kendra and the Indian Medical Association here. It was also celebrated at Mandi Dabwali.

Raid: In order to check the repeated complaints of local residents against the sub-standard medicines being sold openly, a team led by Mr Lalit Mittal, Senior Drug Inspector, conducted raids here on Friday. They sealed some samples of medicines which were not for sale but were being sold by medical store owners.

Stolen: A truck (BJ 31G-181) was reportedly stolen by unidentified persons near local Hathi Park here on Friday. The police has registered a criminal case under Section 379, IPC.

Urged:
The Gram Sudhar Sabha, Berry-Darolan, near here and the Kisan Kalayan Sangathan, Gehadwin, about 10 km from here, led by NGO leader Ram Singh and former Havaldar Santram Sharma, respectively, have urged the Chief Minister and the Health and Family Welfare Minister to give instructions to construct a bridge on River Sutlej here with the town from Berry Darolan to Luhanu Ghat to provide easy to the district headquarters at Bilaspur town.

JAWALAMUKHI
Stabbed:
A woman was allegedly stabbed to death over a property dispute in Tipri village of Dehra subdivision of Kangra district on Friday. Owing to a family dispute Laxmi Devi (38) was allegedly killed. A criminal case has been registered by the police under sections 302, 201,IPC.
