GARHSHANKAR
Woman set afire:
Mr Mohinder Singh, an NRI in an affidavit, alleged that his daughter, Balbir Kaur, was burnt to death by her in-laws for dowry. In her dying statement which was given to the judge at the DMC, Ludhiana, she said that her husband, her mother-in-law and her sister-in-law set her on fire. Her statement has been despatched to the Sessions Judge, Hoshiarpur.

GURDASPUR
Robbers:
The local police arrested a gang of robbers on Wednesday and recovered a gold chain weighing 30 gm. According to Mr Varinder Kumar, SSP, the robbers had snatched the chain from Mrs Amita Gupta on March 2 in Mian Bibi Khara Chowk, Pathankot.
Chetna Week: The district Health Department celebrated Family Welfare Chetna Week and examined 8,000 patients in 90 medical camps involving 350 teams of doctors. According to Mr D.P.S. Sandhu, a Civil Surgeon, 28,593 persons have been identified to be examined for sex-related diseases.

HOSHIARPUR
Power control rooms:
The Hoshiarpur division of the PSEB has set up six control rooms in various localities for monitoring the supply of electricity. Mr M.S. Walia, Additional Executive Engineer, PSEB in a press note advised the consumers to contact these control rooms in case of any fault in the supply of electricity.
Indian Medical Association: The following have been elected office-bearers of the Dasuya unit of the Indian Medical Association: President - Mr R.H.S Sandhu; Secretary - Dr A.S Basra; and Treasurer - Dr Surinder Pal Singh.
Water supply: Residents of over 72 villages of the Kandi area of Hoshiarpur are facing an acute shortage of drinking water. Mr Romesh Chander Dogra, MLA, Dasuya, said most of the tubewells in the area were out of order. He said women had to travel over 5 km daily in search of water. He demanded the immediate release of funds for the repair of old machinery at the tubewell.

JALANDHAR
Appointed:
Mr Jagjit Sandhu has been appointed president of the All-India Rajiv Gandhi Brigade (Punjab) by its chief patron, Mrs Sonia Gandhi.
Youth Congress: Mr Raman Dutt has been appointed secretary of the Punjab Pradesh Youth Congress by Mr Davinder Singh Babbu, president, PPYC.

KHARAR
Awareness camp: The local Rotary Club is organising a traffic awareness camp here in association with the district transport authorities on May 8. According to a press note issued by Mr J.P. Dhiman, the camp would be inaugurated by Mr Ashwani Kapur, DSP, Kharar, near Civil Rest House.

MOGA
Pay Commission:
Pensioners from various villages in the district have urged the state government to implement the Fifth Pay Commission report immediately. They have threatened to launch an agitation in case their demand was not met.
Intoxicants:
The police has recovered intoxicants from various persons during raids in several villages. The SSP, Mr Sharad S. Chauhan, said Sandip Kumar, a resident of Basti Gobindgarh, was arrested following the recovery of 2 kg of opium from his possession. He said 14 kg of poppy was recovered from Dev Raj of Rode village.

MULLANPUR
JTOA meeting:
A general body meeting of the Junior Telecommunication Officers Association held under the chairmanship of Mr Inderjit Singh on Wednesday noted with concern the cancellation of department qualifying-cum-competitive examination for promotion to TES Group "B" without giving due publicity thereby causing harassment to all, particularly those coming from distant stations.

PHAGWARA
Lecture:
The local branch of the Bharat Vikas Parishad organised a lecture on the importance of sewa in present times here on Tuesday. Educationist Balraj Mazria delivered the keynote address. Mr Rakesh Gupta, secretary of the parishad said the parishad had decided to honour all meritorious students of various schools in Phagwara.
Roads: Under a special project, roads in Punjab will be repaired by the end of June at a cost of Rs 570 crore. This was disclosed by the Minister of State for Education, Mr Swarana Ram while addressing a function at the local Kisan Bhavan on Wednesday. The minister also distributed cheques worth Rs 13 lakh to panchayats for the development of villages.

PATIALA
Medical camp:
The Patiala chapter of the Indian Obstetrics and Gynaecological Society held a free medical camp at New Yadvindra Colony on Tuesday in which 60 women were examined and medicines distributed to them. The president of the society, Mrs Ashi R Sareen, said members of the society had decided to provide free check-up facilities at their respective clinics to the patients checked by them at the camp.

BHIWANI
Crushed:
Raj Kumar (35), a resident of Jaipur, was run over by a train when he was attempting to board it. He along with his family, had come from Mandi Dabwali after performing the engagement ceremony of his younger brother. The police has registered a case.
Held: The police has arrested Lokesh of Bhiwani on a charge of abducting a seven-year-old girl Sonu. A case under Sections 363 and 366-A of the IPC has been registered.

ROHTAK
Murder:
A man was allegedly murdered by three persons in Chhudani village of Bahadurgarh subdivision on Wednesday. According to the police, the deceased has been identified as Ramesh. He was attacked with a sharp-edged weapon at about 6.30 a.m. A case under Section 302 of the IPC has been registered.

SIRSA
Crime rate falls:
The crime rate here has come down compared to last year. According to the SSP, Mr B.S. Sandhu, in the first quarter of this year, only 11 murder cases were registered against 21 in the corresponding period last year.
Suicide: Ishwar Singh of Taruana village reportedly committed suicide here on Wednesday. According to a report, Ishwar Singh killed himself after his in-laws reportedly refused to send their daughter with him.
Dowry case: A case under Section 304-B/34, IPC on a charge of dowry death was registered on Wednesday against Kulwant Singh, his brothers Jangir Singh and Balwant Singh and mother of Titukhera village following a complaint of Rajinder Singh which alleged that his sister was strangled by them for want of more dowry. The accused are reportedly missing.
Plea for college: Prof Ram Bilas Sharma, Education Minister, Haryana, Mr Munish Jindal and Mr Naresh Sachdeva, vice-president and treasurer, respectively of Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad, Mandi Kalanwali, have urged that the government should set up a college at Mandi Kalanwali as students had to go to Bathinda or Sirsa for higher education.
Six arrested: Six persons were arrested under the Gambling Act on Wednesday. The police recovered Rs 2,202 from their possession.
Transporter held: Charanjeet Singh, a transporter, was arrested on Wednesday and a case under Sections 353, 186, 332, 506, IPC was registered against him for allegedly assaulting an inspector of octroi of the local Municipal Council.
Raid condemned: Ram Kumar Neoal, state president, Haryana Kisan Mazdoor Ekta Samiti, in a statement alleged here on Thursday that the police raided the house of Tara Chand, a sarpanch of Taheana village, without any search warrant and took away Rs 50,000 and two jeeps. He demanded a probe into the incident.
Case against 5: The railway police has registered a case against five persons under Sections 306/36, IPC in connection with the death of Ramesh Chand who reportedly committed suicide. His 15-year-old daughter, who could not survive the shock, also died.
Boy kidnapped: Five-year-old Shivam, a student of the local Hindu Vidyapeeth was reportedly kidnapped by a former domestic servant here on Wednesday. According to a report lodged by his father, Mr Sunil Kumar, a trader, his son had been missing from school.

SONEPAT
Clinical session:
The Haryana chapter of the Indian Orthopaedic Association will organise a one-day clinical session on the premises of Girdhar Regency here on Sunday. Clinical problems faced by orthopaedic doctors in the state will be discussed. Dr K.K Dua, a member of the state executive committee said delegates from all over the state would take part in the session.
Irrigation Department: The Haryana Government has ordered the shifting of construction divisions 27 and 29 in the Irrigation Department from Sonepat to Fatehabad and Rewari, respectively. This has caused resentment among the farmers of this district as work on the irrigation schemes would be affected. Representatives of various farmers' organisations have urged the Chief Minister, Mr Bansi Lal, to direct the authorities concerned not to shift these divisions.
Power supply: The Haryana Vidyut Prasaran Nigam's failure to replace the damaged transformer in the Harijan Basti of Rattangarh village has caused resentment among people, who have been facing hardships in the absence of power supply.
Protest: The Sonepat Citizens’ Council on Tuesday protested against the alleged harassment to the people seeking driving licences from the office of the SDM here.
Market Committee: The Haryana Government has reconstituted the Market Committee of Sonepat and nominated Mr Kanwal Singh, president of the district unit of the Haryana Vikas Party (HVP) as its chairman and Mr Arun Kumar as its vice-chairman.

BILASPUR
Arrested:
The police has arrested Hoshiyar Singh of Duhakli village on a charge of starting a fire in the Bandla Dhar Forests. Soma Devi of Saifarda village was also arrested for a similar crime under Section 285 of the IPC. The Superintendent of Police, Mr Anurag Garg, said on Wednesday that Soma Devi was responsible for starting a fire in the Parnali forest area.
Camp: A 10-day camp organised by Government Senior Secondary School, Panjgain, under the National Service Scheme concluded here on Tuesday. The programme officer, Mr Rattan Pal Singh said 43 students, including 13 girls, levelled the school playground and the adjoining areas.

JAWALAMUKHI
HelpAge India:
HelpAge India will launch various programmes for senior citizen in Himachal Pradesh to make them self reliant. This was stated by Mr Ajaib Singh, Senior Programme Adviser, Helpage India (Chandigarh region) here on Thursday. He said Rs 2 crore would be spent for the welfare of the aged under a mega plan throughout the country. Of this Rs 20 lakh had been earmarked for Himachal Pradesh.

NAHAN
Potable water:
The local division of the Irrigation and Public Health Department has launched a unique programme of cleaning over 1100 drinking water sources and more than 800 storage tanks.
Cases settled: Twentyfour cases were settled on the spot by the District Grievances Redressal Committee which met here on Wednesday under the Chairmanship of the Deputy Commissioner, Sirmour.
