GARHSHANKAR
Woman set afire: Mr Mohinder Singh, an
NRI in an affidavit, alleged that his daughter,
Balbir Kaur, was burnt to death by her in-laws
for dowry. In her dying statement which was given
to the judge at the DMC, Ludhiana, she said that
her husband, her mother-in-law and her
sister-in-law set her on fire. Her statement has
been despatched to the Sessions Judge,
Hoshiarpur.GURDASPUR
Robbers: The local police arrested a
gang of robbers on Wednesday and recovered a gold
chain weighing 30 gm. According to Mr Varinder
Kumar, SSP, the robbers had snatched the chain
from Mrs Amita Gupta on March 2 in Mian Bibi
Khara Chowk, Pathankot.
Chetna Week: The district Health
Department celebrated Family Welfare Chetna Week
and examined 8,000 patients in 90 medical camps
involving 350 teams of doctors. According to Mr
D.P.S. Sandhu, a Civil Surgeon, 28,593 persons
have been identified to be examined for
sex-related diseases.
HOSHIARPUR
Power control rooms: The Hoshiarpur
division of the PSEB has set up six control rooms
in various localities for monitoring the supply
of electricity. Mr M.S. Walia, Additional
Executive Engineer, PSEB in a press note advised
the consumers to contact these control rooms in
case of any fault in the supply of electricity.
Indian Medical Association: The
following have been elected office-bearers of the
Dasuya unit of the Indian Medical Association:
President - Mr R.H.S Sandhu; Secretary - Dr A.S
Basra; and Treasurer - Dr Surinder Pal Singh.
Water supply: Residents of over
72 villages of the Kandi area of Hoshiarpur are
facing an acute shortage of drinking water. Mr
Romesh Chander Dogra, MLA, Dasuya, said most of
the tubewells in the area were out of order. He
said women had to travel over 5 km daily in
search of water. He demanded the immediate
release of funds for the repair of old machinery
at the tubewell.

Appointed: Mr Jagjit Sandhu has been
appointed president of the All-India Rajiv Gandhi
Brigade (Punjab) by its chief patron, Mrs Sonia
Gandhi.
Youth Congress: Mr Raman Dutt
has been appointed secretary of the Punjab
Pradesh Youth Congress by Mr Davinder Singh
Babbu, president, PPYC.
KHARAR
Awareness camp: The local Rotary
Club is organising a traffic awareness camp here
in association with the district transport
authorities on May 8. According to a press note
issued by Mr J.P. Dhiman, the camp would be
inaugurated by Mr Ashwani Kapur, DSP, Kharar,
near Civil Rest House.
MOGA
Pay Commission: Pensioners from various
villages in the district have urged the state
government to implement the Fifth Pay Commission
report immediately. They have threatened to
launch an agitation in case their demand was not
met.
Intoxicants: The police has recovered
intoxicants from various persons during raids in
several villages. The SSP, Mr Sharad S. Chauhan,
said Sandip Kumar, a resident of Basti
Gobindgarh, was arrested following the recovery
of 2 kg of opium from his possession. He said 14
kg of poppy was recovered from Dev Raj of Rode
village.

JTOA meeting: A general body meeting of
the Junior Telecommunication Officers Association
held under the chairmanship of Mr Inderjit Singh
on Wednesday noted with concern the cancellation
of department qualifying-cum-competitive
examination for promotion to TES Group
"B" without giving due publicity
thereby causing harassment to all, particularly
those coming from distant stations.
PHAGWARA
Lecture: The local branch of the Bharat
Vikas Parishad organised a lecture on the
importance of sewa in present times here on
Tuesday. Educationist Balraj Mazria delivered the
keynote address. Mr Rakesh Gupta, secretary of
the parishad said the parishad had decided to
honour all meritorious students of various
schools in Phagwara.
Roads: Under a special project,
roads in Punjab will be repaired by the end of
June at a cost of Rs 570 crore. This was
disclosed by the Minister of State for Education,
Mr Swarana Ram while addressing a function at the
local Kisan Bhavan on Wednesday. The minister
also distributed cheques worth Rs 13 lakh to
panchayats for the development of villages.
PATIALA
Medical camp: The Patiala chapter of the
Indian Obstetrics and Gynaecological Society held
a free medical camp at New Yadvindra Colony on
Tuesday in which 60 women were examined and
medicines distributed to them. The president of
the society, Mrs Ashi R Sareen, said members of
the society had decided to provide free check-up
facilities at their respective clinics to the
patients checked by them at the camp.
