Elected:
The following have been elected office-bearers of the Bharat Vikas Parishad, Malout: president — Mr Bharat Bhushan Verma; vice-presidents — Mrs Anuradha Nagpal and Mr Satinder Kathuria; secretary — Dr Baldev Kansal; joint secretary — Mr Jeevan Garg; and treasurer — Mr Navin Goyal.

GARHSHANKAR
Elected:
Mr Preet Mohinder Pal Singh and Dr Jaswinder Kaur of SGGS Khalsa College, Mahilpur, have been elected president and secretary, respectively, of the local unit of the Panjab and Chandigarh College Teachers Union. In the district-level election Prof Vinod Vij of SPN College, Mukerian, has been elected president.

JALANDHAR
Waste treatment plant:
A solid waste treatment plant will be set up near Variana village. This plant will solve the problem of garbage in the city and provide fertiliser to the farmers.

PSEB official held: The vigilance bureau arrested Krishan Kumar, a Junior Engineer of the PSEB, Nadala, on Thursday for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 1500 from Mr Jarnail Singh, a resident of Model Town, Talwada, in Kapurthala District, according to Mr Amrik Singh, DSP. A case has been registered against him.

NAWANSHAHR
Laboratory inaugurated:
The state government is planning to set up soil testing laboratories at the block-level. This was stated by Agriculture Minister Gurdev Singh Badal after inaugurating a soil testing laboratory at Saroya village, 25 km from here, on Friday. A district-level farmers training camp and oil seed seminar was also organised on the occasion. He said the government had decided to distribute 1 lakh mini kits of peas, 4,000 of maize seeds, and 1 lakh tonnes of urea at the old price among the farmers.

PANIPAT
Imprisonment:
A local court on Friday sentenced three rapists to 10-year rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs 4,000 each. According to the prosecution, the three had raped a 16-year-old girl on May 2, 1996, here.

PATIALA
Two injured:
Two students were injured on the university campus on Thursday when they were allegedly attacked by other students of the university. According to the police, Rishi, a student of MBA, and Rajpal, a student of Law Department, were injured in an attack.

Elected: Mr K. Surjit Singh and Mr K.K. Kaul have been elected President and General Secretary of the Chandigarh Regional Chapter of the Institute of Town Planners. Mr Gurpreet Singh and Mr M.L. Arora have been elected Treasurer and Auditor of the chapter respectively. The chapter also elected Mr Gurmukh Singh Girn and Mr Jaswant Singh, the Chairman and Secretary of the Building Committee, respectively.

Rally: A 'surya namashkar' and rally will be organised at the Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 33 on the occasion of International Sun Day on Monday at 8.30 am. The function will be organised by the Children Alliance for the Protection of Environment (CAPE).

Demanded: The Association of Retired Excise and Taxation Officers, Punjab has demanded that the Punjab Government should release the DA instalment of 10 per cent of basic pension. Mr H.K.S. Bakshi, Secretary of the association said that they wanted the pension to be released from January 1, this year.

Sunil Dutt: Renowned film star Sunil Dutt will be the chief guest at a state-level function being organised at Kajheri village by Shaheed Bhagat Singh Sports and Cultural Club at 10 am on Sunday. Mr Dutt will address the youth of the village, according to a statement by Mr Surjit Singh and Mr Jatinder Kumar, president and secretary of the club, respectively.

PANCHKULA
Programme:
The Family Planning of India (FPAI) organised an interaction programme for parents and teachers on "sexual and reproductive health and needs of adolescents" at the DC Model School in Sector 7 here on Saturday. As many as 65 parents, teachers, and volunteers of the local branch of the FPAI participated in the programme. The teachers asked for orientation training for themselves and the parents. The Branch Manager of the FPAI, Mr Amit Gupta, said the principals of different schools agreed to work on a curriculum regarding sexual education in consultation with the FPAI.

May Day: The Labour Nirman Sangh observed May Day at Labour Chowk in Sector 16 here on Saturday. The President of the sangh, Mr Jagdish Kashyap, said the administration had provided a temporary water connection at the site for the convenience of labourers.

SIRSA
Woman held:
Jagdish Singh, a resident of Mandi Kalanwali in Sirsa district, was allegedly murdered by Darshana, daughter of Ram Singh, on Thursday. In a complaint, Mr Naib Singh of Mandi Kalanwali alleged that Darshana was responsible for murder of her brother. The police has registered a case under Section 302, IPC, against her.

BILASPUR
Cases settled:
The Deputy Commissioner, Mr Ramesh Kapil, presided over a district-level "prashashan janta ke dwar shivir" held at Bachhretu village, 78 km from here, on Thursday. As many as 100 of the 110 cases were settled. The remaining cases were referred to the departments concerned. He also visited Saneera, Kosarian, Naghiyar, Badagaon, Gallu, Jaddu, Gulzar and Gharan villages and surveyed the development works.

NURPUR
Forest fires:
As many as 15 forest fire incidents have been reported in the Nurpur forest division till Friday. According to the Divisional Forest Officer, Nurpur, about 77 hectare of forest land caught fire which has resulted a loss of Rs 1.84 lakh.
