ABOHAR
Accepting bribe:
Amar Dass, a clerk at the subdivisional office complex, here was arrested by a vigilance team on Thursday. He was allegedly accepting Rs 500 as bribe for paying compensation to a farmer, Surjit Singh, of Dhaba Kukrian village against his land acquired by the state government.

AMRITSAR
Polythene bags:
The Amritsar Vikas Manch has sought a ban on the storage, sale, manufacture and use of polythene bags. In a letter to the Deputy Commissioner, the General Secretary, Dr Charanjit Singh Gumtala, said the District Magistrate, Bathinda, had already banned polythene bags in the district from April 1.

FEROZEPORE
Welfare camp:
The IFFCO here on Thursday organised a welfare camp at Shahdenala village. Children and widows were given schoolbags and sewing machines, respectively.

GURDASPUR
Arrested:
The police on Wednesday arrested Thamas of Pathankot and Mukhtiar Singh, a truck driver, for allegedly stealing spareparts and scrap iron worth Rs 60,000 from the PWD Water and Sewerage Department, Chamba. A case under Sections 379 and 411, IPC, has been registered.

Identity cards: Farmers whose land fall beyond the border fencing will be issued identity cards soon. This was decided at a meeting of civil officers, panches and sarpanches at Dostpur village on Tuesday.

Shobha yatra: A shobha yatra was organised here on Wednesday on the eve of Ram Navami. Starting from Krishan Mandir, it passed through the town bazaar.

Telephone adalat:
A telephone adalat of Jalandhar telecom district was held here on Thursday. Mr Rajesh Wadhwa, General Manager, Telecom, presided, Mr Gurbachan Singh, Director, Finance and Accounts, and Mr S.K. Khullar, Deputy General Manager (Operation), were among those present.

Eye operation camp:
A free eye operation camp was organised by the Citizen Welfare Club at Civil Hospital here on Thursday. Ms Gurkanwal Kaur, president, Punjab Mahila Congress, presided .

PATIALA
Honoured:
Anjana Srivastva, a theatre and TV artist, and President of IPTA Trishala Kapoor were honoured by Mr T.N Sharma, Chairman, Youth Lions Club International, for their services and efforts to promote Indian theatre and culture. This was stated in a press note issued here on Thursday.

Blood donation camp: The NSS (unit-III) of Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology organised a blood donation camp here recently. It was inaugurated by Dr C.B Kukreja, Dean, Research and Development.

PHAGWARA
Succumbed to injuries:
Sunita, who had sustained serious burns, died at a Jalandhar-based hospital on Thursday. She was allegedly set on fire by a person named Gora, with whom she had an affair, and his sister-in-law, Ashu, at the local Palahi Gate. A case has been registered.

Burglary: The cloth shop of Mr Krishan Gopal at the local Gaushala Bazaar was burgled on Wednesday The burglars had broken the shutters of the shop. A case has been registered.

TARN TARAN
Ram katha concludes:
The "Ram Katha" started by preachers of Jyoti Jagriti Sansthan, Noormahal, from March concluded here peacefully on Wednesday, in spite of protests by the Sikh sangat, who alleged that Guru Granth Sahib was being misinterpreted.

Plaza carnival: The Plaza Carnival at Sector 17 plaza on Saturday will present an entertaining programme of Punjabi folk music, songs and dances by Paramjit Sidhu and troupe of the ‘Nachdi Jawani’ group. The inmates of Mother Teresa’s Home, Old People’s Home, Prayas and Bal Niketan, Panchkula, have been invited to the programme. The chief guest will be Mrs Anuradha Gupta, Home Secretary.

Camp ends: A five-day social work camp organised by the Youth Club, Khuda Ali Sher, affiliated to Nehru Yuva Kendra, Chandigarh, ended on Friday with a colourful ceremony. The camp was held at the Government High School. The DPI (Schools and Colleges), Mr D.S. Mangat, was the chief guest. The Nehru Yuva Kendra District Youth Co-ordinator, Mr Gurmail Singh Bajwa, presided over the function.

Annual day:
The annual results day of St Soldier Divine Public School in Sector 16 will be celebrated in the school premises on Saturday. The Principal of the school, Mr H.S. Majhail, said horse-riding, baby show, dances and cultural activities would be organised on the occasion.

BHIWANI
Dead:
Devender Dangi (27) died when he was felling a tree from his residential plot at Charkhi Dadri recently . The tree fell on him and he got serious injuries on the head.

KURUKSHETRA
Power theft recoveries:
The Haryana Vidyut Prasaran Nigam, Operation Circle, Kurukshetra, collected Rs 9.88 crore from defaulters in February against Rs 7.23 crore in the same month, last year according to Mr V.P. Arya, Superintending Engineer.

SIRSA
Voter's list:
A computer cell has been established at the District Election Office here. The Deputy Commissioner and District Election Officer, Dr Avtar Singh, said voters of all Vidhan Sabha constituencies could check their name in the voter's list by depositing the stipulated fee.

Smuggler held: The Dabwali police in the district has arrested a woman smuggler after six years. According to police sources, Chhinder Kaur had been arrested in 1993 along with 10 kg of poppy husk but was granted bail. She had absconded and was missing since then.

Power theft: The Haryana Vidyut Prasaran Nigam here in a raid detected 68 cases of power theft worth Rs 7.86 lakh and recovered Rs 3.10 lakh from defaulters. According to the Deputy Commissioner, Mr Avtar Singh, said efforts were being made to streamline the supply of electricity by laying new LT lines.

Murdered: Durga Nathini (50), a "sadhvi" was found dead in her hut on the Railway road near the railway station here on Thursday. She is believed to have been murdered three days back.

Suicide: A 24-year-old newly married woman at Grewal Basti here allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself in her father's house, according to the police here on Friday. She was said to be mentally sick.

Injured: Gurmail Singh, a farmer of Sukhchain village in the district, was seriously injured with sharpedged weapons and lathis by his father Gurmeet Singh and brothers, Gurmeet and Jaspaul, at the village on Thursday. The accused have reportedly absconded.

Arrested: The Rai police arrested three persons on Thursday and foiled their attempts to smuggle cows from Haryana to Uttar Pradesh for slaughtering. According to a report, the police intercepted the four-wheeler carrying the cows near Kundli village.

SONEPAT
Assault:
Mr Umed Singh, a conductor of the Haryana Roadways, was beaten up by a group of ticketless youths at Barota village, 25 km from here, on Wednesday. According to a report reaching here, the youths also tried to assault Mr Hukam Chand, Traffic Manager. However, two inspectors, Mr Jai Kishan and Mr Ram Phal Malik, sustained minor injuries. A case has been registered.

BILASPUR
Contract lecturers:
All school lecturers working on contract in Himachal Pradesh would get extension in their services. This was stated by the Chief Minister, Mr Prem Kumar Dhumal, when a deputation of the Himachal Pradesh State School Contract Lecturers Association met him here recently.

HAMIRPUR
Car stolen:
A Maruti car was stolen from the main bazaar of the town on Thursday. The car belonged to a salesman of a cigarette company. A case has been registered.

NURPUR
Decision flayed:
The Himachal Pradesh Road Transport Corporation Employees Federation has expressed resentment against the government's decision to form a bus stand corporation in the state. Members of the federation said the new Corporation would adversely affect them and added that the proposed new transport policy had still not been implemented.

SHIMLA
