AMRITSAR
Group song competition:
The team of Guru Nanak Dev University, which represented India in the group song (National competition), got first prize at the "SAARC Fest-99". The festival concluded recently at Gulbarga (Karnataka). It was organised by the Department of Youth Affairs and Sports, Ministry of Human Resource Development. The university had earlier won the overall runners up trophy and AIU Theatre Trophy at the national youth festival organised by the Association of Indian Universities.

FEROZEPORE
Eye camp:
A six-day free eye camp, which was organised here by the Aggarwal Friends Society concluded on Wednesday evening at the Frances Newton Hospital. Nearly 400 patients suffering from various eye ailments were examined and treated by eye specialists and as many as 46 cataract operations were performed at the camp. The patients were provided free board and lodging. Spectacles and contact lenses were given free of cost to the poor patients.

LUDHIANA
Grant for PFA:
The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment has sanctioned an amount of Rs 4,50,000 to the local chapter of the People for Animals Organisation. The amount has been sanctioned for the purchase of an ambulance for animals in distress.

Open darbar: During an open darbar held at the office of the Deputy Commissioner, Mr Arun Goel, here on Thursday, as many as 300 persons came forward with their complaints. Most of the complaints were redressed on the spot and the rest were forwarded to the officials concerned for redressal, within a week.

NAWANSHAHR
Rehabilitation of disabled:
The local unit of the Association of Physically Handicapped in collaboration with the NRI branch of the State Bank of Patiala, organised a rehabilitation of the disabled-cum-awareness camp here on Thursday at Doaba Club. The camp, which was presided over by the Deputy Commissioner, Dr Roshan Sunkaria, aimed at providing information to the handicapped persons about various welfare schemes launched by the government for their rehabilitation. Dr Sunkaria said the district administration had prepared a directory of the disabled persons residing in the district and had chalked out a comprehensive plan for their rehabilitation.

PATIALA
Inaugurated:
A three-day workshop on the development of self instruction materials organised by the Department of Correspondence Courses, Punjabi University, in collaboration with the Indira Gandhi National Open University, was inaugurated here on Thursday by Dr R.M. Goel, Pro-Vice-Chancellor. Dr Santosh Panda, chief speaker, stressed the need and importance of converting the traditional print material into self instructional material in order to develop the students' capability for independent learning.

Competition: The Maharani Ladies Club organised a flower arrangement competition here. In the fresh flower arrangement competition Ms Sarla Puri, Ms Mehtab Singh and Ms Kanchan got the first, second and third prizes respectively, according to a press note issued by the club here on Thursday.

Book released: Dr Joginder Singh Puar, Vice-Chancellor of Punjabi University, released a book "Human Growth — A Multidisciplinary Approach" edited by Dr D.P. Bhatnagar, Dr S.K. Verma and Dr (Mrs) R. Mokha at a function held in the university, here.

ROPAR
Truck found:
The local police has found a truck carrying 300 cement bags after it was abandoned by thieves at Mianpur village. The truck had been stolen from Lohgarh village. According to Mr Jagdish Singh Kahlon, SP (Detective), Ropar, the thieves had stolen it when the driver of the truck, Manohar Lal, was having his meals near Lohgarh village on Sunday night.

Lecture:
The local Panchnad Research Institute will organise a lecture on “Conversions: its constitution and social implications” at IMA hall in Sector 15 here on Saturday. The State Education Minister, Mr Rambilas Sharma, will preside. Prof K.S.Arya, a former Principal of DAV College, at Chandigarh, will also speak on the occasion.

Craft centre: The local unit of the Family Planning Association of India (FPAI) has started a craft centre at its premises in Sector 4 here. Dr M.N.Tavergiri, Vice-President (All-India Council), Family Planning Association of India, Mumbai, inaugurated the centre. A spokesman of the FPAI said 21 girls had got themselves registered at the centre.

KARNAL
Bribery:
The manager of the Haryana Financial Corporation was caught red-handed while accepting bribe of Rs 5,000. Mr Ved Prakash, a resident of Dhana, who had applied for a loan for setting up a factory, had complained that the officer had demanded a bribe for clearing his loan application. A case of corruption under Section 71 of the Anti-Corruption Act has been registered.

PANIPAT
Arrested:
The Samalkha police has arrested a dacoit, Gopal, a resident of Muzaffarnagar (UP) for his involvement in many cases of murders and robbery in the last two years. The Superintendent of Police, Mr Manoj Yadav, said the accused was a member of Sikender, alias Satpal gang.

ROHTAK
Abduction:
A 16-year-old Dalit girl has been allegedly abducted by a youth at Chandi village in the district. According to the police the girl was abducted by a resident of the same village on Monday. A case has been registered under Sections 363 and 366 of the IPC. In another incident a car was stolen from Para Mohalla locality on Wednesday night.

SIRSA
Woman dies:
Tirlochan Kaur mother of two children and a resident of Noharia Bazaar, here died due to burn injuries at the Civil Hospital on Wednesday night. She was allegedly under depression and had set herself on fire at her residence. The body was handed over to her family after a post-mortem examination.

Rozgar scheme: Under the Prime Minister's Rozgar Scheme 69 unemployed youths of district have been given loans worth Rs 40.20 lakh. As many as 103 applications of unemployed youth have been sent to different banks for sanction of loans. The Deputy Commissioner, Dr Avtar Singh, said the district Industrial Centre had disbursed loans of Rs 4.27 lakh to five entrepreneurs last month under schemes for rural and small scale industries.

Suicide bid: Jasvir Kaur (35), consumed some poisonous substance at her residence here on Wednesday and was admitted to the Civil Hospital here. Her condition was stated to be critical. She was reportedly suffering from depression for the past several days.

Molestation: Sugreev, a resident of Jandwala Bishnoian village in the district, was arrested by the police for allegedly molesting a minor. Mrs Shimla Devi, a resident of Dhani Jandwala Jatan and mother of the girl had lodged a complaint alleging the accused had molested her daughter on February 26 in fields when she was returning from school. A case under Section 323 and 354 of the IPC had been registered against the accused.

SONEPAT
Elected:
Dr P.M. Gaur, a candidate of the Haryana College Teachers Union (HCTU), has been elected for the Academic Council of the Maharshi Dayanand University, Rohtak on Wednesday.

Inspection: The Haryana Government has ordered an inspection of all godowns and stocks of the traders in the state to check possibilities of adulterated mustard oil going to the retailers. The health Department has been directed to take samples of the oil being produced at the mills. top

Resented:
Twentyfive gram panchayat pradhans of Nurpur block in a memorandum submitted to the Chief Minister and Minister of State for Panchayati Raj, have resented the move to form vigilant committees in the panchayats to supervise the construction works costing less than Rs 50,000. They alleged that the government had been ignoring the democratically elected panchayat bodies.
