2 held on cheating charge

CHANDIGARH, June 28 — The police has arrested two persons for cheating Mr Jagmohan Singh, a resident of Sector 42, of two LPG cylinders, a stereo and a TV set.

According to the police, the two — Lila Ram and Ram Kumar — took these articles from his servant on the plea that these were needed in a marriage function of Mr Jagmohan Singh.

A case has been registered.

Thief held: The police has arrested a thief and a resident of Modern Housing Complex, Mani Majra, Rachhpal Singh.

As many as five stolen spare wheels of scooters and some scooter and motor cycle batteries have been recovered from his possession.

With his arrest four other cases of theft in the complex have been solved, the police said.

Arrested: The police has arrested Ghanshyam and recovered old parts of aeroplane which he allegedly stole from the Air Force Station.

A case has been registered.

Liquor seized: A resident of Colony No. 5, Anil Kumar, has been arrested and eight bottles of whisky recovered from him.

A case under the Excise Act has been registered.Back



 

Campus beat
BBA/BCA candidates to submit forms

CHANDIGARH, June 28—The students who appeared in the BBA/BCA entrance test conducted by Panjab University on June 27 are required to apply for admission to the said courses on the prescribed form delivered to them in the examination hall and submit it to the coordinator after the declaration of the results, a press note issued by the Registrar, Prof Paramjit Singh, said here today.

While the coordinator for the BBA course is Principal D.P. Singh, Government College, Sector 46, that for BCA is Mrs Harmit Kaur, Principal of Ramgarhia Girls College, Miller Ganj, Ludhiana.

In case of non-availability of an additional admission form, a photostat copy may be used for the purpose.

The last date of receipt of forms at the respective colleges is July 24 up to 5pm. The interviews for admission to the BCA course will be held from July 29 to August 1 from 9 a.m. onwards while those for the BBA course are slated to be held from August 2 to 5. No separate letters for the interviews shall be issued and the candidates are required to look up the detailed interview schedule in the leading newspapers, the note added.Back

A tribute to Kargil martyrs

CHANDIGARH, June 28 — As a tribute to the martyrs of Kargil, theatre actors of the city have decided to stage a street play, ''Shaheed Ki Wapsi'', in all the sectors of Chandigarh under the direction of Mr Sudesh Sharma.

The decision was taken today at a meeting held by the artistes and directors of various theatre groups, including Sri Sai Arts, Lok Kala Manch, Indian Performing Arts and Theatre Lab, under the chairmanship of Mr Umesh Kant, theatre director, at Punjab Kala Bhavan, Sector 16.

The staging of the street play would be held from July 1 onwards. On every Saturday and Sunday, shows would be staged at the Sukhna Lake, Rose Garden, Terrace Garden and Rock Garden. On weekdays ''Shaheed Ki Wapsi'' would be played at the Sector 17 Plaza, Bank Square in Sector 17, Hotel Aroma in Sector 22 and the High Court premises.

Among those who would be acting in the play are Tej Ban Gandhi, Yogesh Arora, Rajiv Mehta, Suvinder Pal, Yogesh Tungal, Manpreet Singh, Harpreet Singh Virk and Kuldeep Singh.Back



 

Price Watch
Cabbage, cucumber dearer

CHANDIGARH, June 28 — A number of vegetables, including cabbage, cucumber and tomato have become costly, while the prices of some other vegetables have remained stable in the past few days.

After a survey of the local market today, it was found that if a kg of cabbage was priced at Rs 6 two days back, it was available at Rs 8 in city markets today. Its wholesale price has increased from Rs 25 to Rs 30 per 5 kg in this period.

Cucumber has also gone the cabbage way as its price of has gone up from Rs 8 per kg to Rs 10 per kg in the retail market and from Rs 30 per 5 kg to Rs 35 per 5 kg in the wholesale market. Traders said that the hike was an outcome of decrease in arrivals from neighbouring states of Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh.

Tomato price also witnessed an upward trend. A kg of it, which was priced at Rs 8 just two days back, was priced today at Rs 10 in the local market. Retailers attributed the hike to a shortage of the vegetable in the wholesale market.

On the other hand, prices of some vegetables have come down. A kg of lady's finger could be bought by paying Rs 8 today, while it was priced at Rs 10 two days back.

Majority of the vegetables did not register any fluctuation in different parts of the city. 'Pahari' variety of Potato was priced at Rs 10 per kg, whereas, the ordinary variety could be purchased by paying Rs 8 per kg.

Other vegetables like onion, cauliflower and brinjal were priced at Rs 10 per kg each, whereas, beans and capsicum were available at Rs 20 and Rs 16, respectively. Lemon and gourd remained stable at Rs 20 per kg each.

Retailers fear that prices of some vegetables coming from Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh may shoot up in the next few days due to pre-monsoon showers.Back



 


Gurbaaz tames Harjinder to clinch CC's Cup

CHANDIGARH, June 28 — Gurbaaz Mann clinched the Chief Commissioner's Cup winning a one-sided final against his experienced but off-colour opponent Harjinder Kang at the Chandigarh Golf Club course here yesterday.

Sixteen-year-old Gurbaaz, a plus-one commerce student of Bhavan Vidyalaya, displayed superb golf to wrap up the match on the 14th hole being 5-up with four holes to go. He birdied the second, fourth and eighth holes and dropped a shot on the sixth. Scratch handicapper Gurbaaz had a brilliant start being 4-up in the first four holes but Kang fought back valiantly to decrease the lead to two by birding the fifth and having par on the sixth. Gurbaaz won the seventh and eighth holes to take the lead back to four. Pars on the ninth and 10th by both finalists saw Gurbaaz leading by four holes on the 11th tee. He hit a perfect shot on the par-3 green while Kang, by now playing under pressure, plugged his drive into the bunker wall.

Kang's strong point, his short game, deserted him when he needed it most leading to a bad pitch resulting in another crucial hole lost increasing the lead to five holes. Kang missed his chip and putt from the fringe of the 12th temporary green while Gurbaaz made it. Leading by six holes Gurbaaz hit a perfect drive followed by Kang who hit an excellent drive too. Kang won the 13th hole on a birdie. Both hit the 14th green and made par to finish the match in Mann's favour.

Controlling his excitement an inspired Gurbaaz said he was delighted with the way he hit his irons. He concentrated on his own game without paying too much attention to what his opponent was doing. He went for regulations and was happy when the birdies dropped.

The Chief Commissioner Cup is a match play on a knock-out basis to declare the Club Champion.

Tuli shines

Fine allround performance by Arun Tuli (43 not out and 2 for 21) enabled Godrej Cricket Club beat Pace XI by three wickets and enter the final of the Shine Star Cup Cricket Tournament here on Sunday.

Electing to bat, Pace XI were propped up by a partnership of 51 runs between R. Nain (38) and Vineet Soni (28). The introduction of spin in the form of Arun Tuli and Vijay Pal not only reduced the run rate but also enabled the Godrej Club to captured six wickets. The Pace XI scored 154 runs in the allotted 25 overs.

Replying to this total, Godrej Club lost two early wickets. However, Sukhwinder Tinku (27) and Rajesh Patha (28) consolidated the innings with a partnership of 49 runs. Patha scored an hurricane 28 off just 11 balls which included 16 in one over of Parveen.

In the last 10 overs Godrej Club required 61 runs for a win . At this stage Arun Tuli (43 not out ) and Vinod Binta (31 not out ) kept their cool and took their team past the victory target with one over to spare.

Brief scores: Pace XI 154 all out in 24.5 overs (Ravinder Nain 38 , Jatinder 36, Vineet Soni 28, Vijay Pal 3 for 4, Arun Tuli 2 for 21 , Sukhvinder Tinkoo 2 for 29). In another match Fighter Cricket Club defeated Kalsi XI by 32 runs.

Title for Nadia

Nadia Saini, a student of DAV Public School, Sector 8, clinched the cadet girls title in the Chandigarh Table Tennis Championships at the Sector 23 Table Tennis Hall here on Monday. In the final, Nadia got past Taranpreet Kaur of Government Model Senior secondary School, Sector 38, 21-15, 21-12.

Adiyta Puri of Manav Mangal High School, Sector 21, won the title in boys cadet section. He beat Sajal Kaushal of Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 35, 24-22, 21-13.
