CHANDIGARH, June 28
Gurbaaz Mann clinched the Chief Commissioner's Cup
winning a one-sided final against his experienced but
off-colour opponent Harjinder Kang at the Chandigarh Golf
Club course here yesterday.
Sixteen-year-old
Gurbaaz, a plus-one commerce student of Bhavan Vidyalaya,
displayed superb golf to wrap up the match on the 14th
hole being 5-up with four holes to go. He birdied the
second, fourth and eighth holes and dropped a shot on the
sixth. Scratch handicapper Gurbaaz had a brilliant start
being 4-up in the first four holes but Kang fought back
valiantly to decrease the lead to two by birding the
fifth and having par on the sixth. Gurbaaz won the
seventh and eighth holes to take the lead back to four.
Pars on the ninth and 10th by both finalists saw Gurbaaz
leading by four holes on the 11th tee. He hit a perfect
shot on the par-3 green while Kang, by now playing under
pressure, plugged his drive into the bunker wall.
Kang's strong point, his
short game, deserted him when he needed it most leading
to a bad pitch resulting in another crucial hole lost
increasing the lead to five holes. Kang missed his chip
and putt from the fringe of the 12th temporary green
while Gurbaaz made it. Leading by six holes Gurbaaz hit a
perfect drive followed by Kang who hit an excellent drive
too. Kang won the 13th hole on a birdie. Both hit the
14th green and made par to finish the match in Mann's
favour.
Controlling his
excitement an inspired Gurbaaz said he was delighted with
the way he hit his irons. He concentrated on his own game
without paying too much attention to what his opponent
was doing. He went for regulations and was happy when the
birdies dropped.
The Chief Commissioner
Cup is a match play on a knock-out basis to declare the
Club Champion.
