CHANDIGARH, June 11 — The Panjab University Teachers Association (PUTA) yesterday presented a representation to the Vice-Chancellor for the removal of anomalies in the fixation of pay in the revised pay scales.

In a press note issued here, PUTA said that many professors of the university had not been granted one increment for every three increments they had in the unrevised pay scale as stipulated in the pay revision rules. PUTA said that the university should take a decision to provide at least two increments to all such teachers who had never received any benefit of increments on account of PhD throughout their career in the university.

On the Career Advancement Scheme (CAS), the PUTA President pointed out that the UGC had provided that the total service of a teacher might be counted for determining eligibility for promotion under the CAS, but no modalities for counting the total service had been finalised.Back

Expression of life's rhythms

CHANDIGARH, June 11 — It was an aesthetic expression of the rhythms of life in the form of a kathak dance at Pracheen Kala Kendra, this evening. Budding artiste Madhura Pathak, a disciple of kathak virtuoso Shovana Narayan, presented traditional kathak items of both Lucknow and Jaipur Gharanas in a composite performance of nritta, nritya and abhinaya.

Madhura commenced her performance with a devotional rendering to envoke Goddess Saraswati in Raga Vasant. In teen taal, her movements had the sublimity of the Lucknow Gharana combined with the natural grace of the Jaipur Gharana. She then presented Nritta of pure-dance items in teen taal. A cheerful Madhura, performed to the sheer delilght of the audience which appreciated her agility and perfect control over rhythmic patterns.

Her next item was 'Draupadi Cheer Haran'. The mythological tale of devotion was well enacted in the form of a dance drama. In the composition 'Shyam Rang Mein Hui Nihal', depicting intense longing for God, both physical and metaphysical, she presented a fine blend of the physical with the sublime.

Peas, tomato costlier
Tribune News Service

CHANDIGARH, June 11— Even as the prices of a number of commonly used vegetables remained stable, peas, tomato and brinjal have become costlier in the market during the past 24 hours.

During a survey of the local market, it was found that there was a sharp hike in the prices of peas, brinjal and tomato. A kg of tomato, priced at Rs 12 yesterday, was available today for Rs 16. The wholesale price of the vegetable has increased from Rs 40 to Rs 60 per five kg during this period. According to traders, the price has gone up due to lesser arrivals of the vegetable from Himachal Pradesh and shrinking supplies of local variety of the vegetable from different parts of Punjab and Haryana.

"Though, local variety of tomato is coming in the market, it is not up to the mark. Hence, people prefer the 'pahari' variety which has resulted in a hike in demand , thus causing a scarcity of the vegetable in the market," said a Sector 20 trader.

The same was the case with peas, as its price has shot up from Rs 40 a kg to Rs 50 a kg during this period. The wholesale price of the vegetable has gone up from Rs 180 to Rs 225 per five kg.
