Liquor smuggler arrested

PANCHKULA, June 5 — Harbilas, a resident of Toda, was arrested by the police while he was carrying 65 pouches of country liquor at Raipur Rani, near here, on Friday. The Police has registered a case under the Excise Act.

Two arrested: The local police has arrested two persons for smuggling 1 kg opium, worth Rs 7,000, today. The police has also seized the scooter (PBS-5350) used by the suspects in smuggling.

According to a press note issued by Mr H.S. Sidhu, SSP of Patiala, the suspects, Gursewak Singh, a resident of Sanaur, and Darshan Singh, a resident of Badshahpur, were caught by the police near the Dhillon factory adjacent to Chhat Baggar village.

Harry to clash with Tanveer in final

CHANDIGARH, June 5—Tejinder Harry and Mohammad Tanveer will clash in the men's singles final while in the women's section Anjali Negi will take on her arch rival Saroj Chandel in the final of the St Stephen's Ranking Carrom Tournament at the St Stephen's School,Sector 45 , here tomorrow.

On the penultimate day of the tournament today, Gagandeep gave a harrowing time to Tejinder Harry in the men's singles semi-final, before the latter could win at 25-21, 19-25, 25-17. In the second semi-final, Mohammad Tanveer got the better of Ramanpreet, winning 25-8, 25-24.

The other players who have made it to the finals in various events include Pallavi and Eveleen in the girls sub-junior event, Puneet Lamba and Nabhi Sahni in the junior girls section, Ramanpreet and Aita Ram in the sub-junior boys event, and Jagdev Mann and Gagandeep in the junior boys section.

Results:-Men's singles (quarterfinals): Tejinder Harry b Charukh Goyal 25-8, 25-3; Gagandeep b Sanjay Negi 17-25, 25-22, 25-6; Mohd. Tanveer b Ajay Gupta 25-9, 25-4; Ramanpreet b Jagdev Mann 25-5, 25-23. (semi-final): Tejinder Harry b Gagandeep 25-21, 19-25, 25-17; Mohd. Tanveer b Ramanpreet 25-8, 25-24.

Women's singles (quarterfinals): Veena Dumra b Inder Kanta 5-25, 24-1, 25-9; Saroj Chandel b Bhavna Sachdev 25-0, 25-0; Nabhi Sahni b Puneet Lamba 21-11, 13-18, 25-2.

Junior boys( quarterfinals) : Rozario b Sumit Chakarvorty 25-18, 25-11; Jagdev b Baninder singh 25-17, 25-10; Devinderjit Singh b Anu K Papneja 25-12, 25-5; Gagandeep b Taranpreet 25-10, 25-0. (semifinals): Jagdev Mann b Rozario 25-5, 25-0; Gagandeep b Devinderjit 25-0, 25-7.
