LONDON, July 28 (AP) — Britain’s first Sikh peer took his seat in the House of Lords after being formally sworn in as Lord King of West Bromwich. Mr Tarsem King, (62), a leader of Sandwell Council and Managing Director of Sandwell Polybags, near Birmingham in central England, became the latest labour working peer to take his seat.

NSCN ultras kill 6
GUWAHATI, July 28 (PTI) — In a major ambush in Assam today, NSCN ultras killed six persons, including five policemen, and injured six others. Official sources said here a police party in a truck was proceeding from Longsuliate to Sikaribasti in Karbi Anglong district of Central Assam for an operation when NSCN ultras fired on them from automatic weapons resulting in the death of six persons on the spot and injury to six others. The Chief Minister said arrangement was being made for ex-gratia payment of Rs 5 lakh to those killed and some amount for the injured.

Bihar flood toll 141
PATNA, July 28 (PTI) — The overall flood situation in Bihar worsened today with major rivers Burhi Gandak, Kosi, Bagmati and Punpun eroding embankments at several places as the death toll rose to 141, official sources said. Six more deaths were reported from Darbhanga (two), Saharsa (one), Supaul (one), West Champaran (two) since yesterday, the sources said.

31 killed in Lanka
COLOMBO, July 28 (UNI) — As many as 23 LTTE Tigers were killed in fresh fighting with government troops in the embattled North Eastern Sri Lanka, during the past 24 hours, while six persons and two security personnel died when a LTTE gang opened fire at a boutique yesterday, reports said today.

Last solar eclipse
MUMBAI, July 28 (UNI) — August 11, 1999, will be the day of the dark sun and some parts of Kutch, Saurashtra, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh will be swept by a narrow band of the shadow of the moon for a minute. This will be the last solar eclipse of this millennium, and will occur at about 6 pm when the sun is about to set on the day.
