Tribune News Service

CHANDIGARH, July 26 — The art exhibition ‘Homage to Kargil Heroes’, put up by 25 senior artists of the city, at the Government Museum and Art Gallery, Sector 10, which was to conclude on July 25, has now been extended till August 1. This was announced here today by Mr Shiv Singh, Chairman, Chandigarh Lalit Kala Akademi.

The exhibition was organised by the Chandigarh Lalit Kala Akademi, in collaboration with the Chandigarh Administration, in order to collect funds for the Kargil cause. The prices of the exhibits were slashed heavily, to motivate the ordinary buyer to consider buying these.

Only two exhibits, works of photographer Devinder Singh, were sold and that too on the first day. The Government Museum has now bought six of these works. The artists whose works have been bought by the Museum include Parminder Lal, Malkiat Singh, R K Jain, Satwant Singh, Madan Lal and Dhami. The Director of the Museum, Mr V N Singh, six exhibits had been procured by them, but failed to give names of the artists.

Meanwhile, the Punjab Arts Council, in collaboration with the Punjab Lalit Kala Akademi (PLKA), has decided to hold a painting workshop, from July 28 to August 1, on the theme of Kargil at the Punjab Kala Bhavan Complex, Sector 16. The paintings produced in this workshop would be donated by the artists voluntarily to the PLKA, who would later organise a pubic exhibition of these works for sale to generate funds for the Kargil cause. The PLKA also plans to exhibit for sale about three dozen paintings, which are lying in their stock, as their contribution towards this cause.

The Secretary, PLKA and the convener of this exhibition, Mr Jarnail Singh, said, “This exhibition would be our effort to generate funds. We hope that people come forward to buy these works of art.”

Mr Shiv Singh added, “People of the city are not really exposed to art exhibitions, and shy away, especially when it comes to buying art. But with senior artists having donated their works at such reduced prices, the exhibition had been a sincere effort on our part.”Back

Consumer Courts
Tailor told to compensate client
Tribune News Service

CHANDIGARH, July 26 — The UT Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum-I has directed a tailor to refund a consumer Rs 515 for his failure to deliver him a stitched shirt.

In his complaint, Mr Dinesh Bhardwaj, a resident of Sector 23, had contended that he had given a piece of cloth for stitching of a shirt to SB Tailors, Sector 40, on May 27, 1998. The tailor had promised to deliver the shirt by June 10, 1998, but despite numerous visits the shirt was not delivered. However, the trouser which was given along with the shirt was delivered.

A notice was issued but since the counsel after seeking time to file a reply neither appeared nor filed a reply, he was proceeded against ex parte.

The forum bench comprising its President, Mr H.C Modi and members Mr R.K Behl and Ms Shashi Kanta held the tailor guilty of deficiency in services. After going through the affidavit submitted by the consumer, they directed the tailor to pay Rs 350 as the cost of the cloth, Rs 65 as the stitching charges, besides Rs 100 as costs.

Gas connection

The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum-II has directed M/s Sabharwal Gas Agency, Sector 47 C to release the gas connection to a complainant immediately without insisting her to purchase the hot plate from them and also pay costs of Rs 2100 as compensation.

In her complaint, Mrs Kamla Malik had stated that she had booked an LPG connection with M/s Saraswati Gas Agency, Pehowa, in 1991 and had applied for the transfer of the connection when she shifted to Chandigarh. The gas connection was shifted but the gas agency refused to release the same on the ground that she was not prepared to purchase the hot plate from it. The complainant told the HPC officials that she already has the required hot plate.

In its reply, the gas agency submitted that it was willing to release the gas connection provided the complainant gives proof of her residence and the possession of a hot plate.

The forum bench comprising its President, Mr R.P. Bajaj and members Mr H.S Walia and Mrs Kamlesh Gupta accepted the contention of the complainant and observed that it has become a practice with the gas dealers to insist upon the consumers to purchase the hot plate from them before the release of the new gas connection. They further held that consumers are being simply harassed and the common grievance expressed by the consumers was that gas dealers supply inferior quality hot plates at higher cost.

While allowing the complaint, they directed the gas agency to pay Rs 2100 as costs, including compensation for harassment.Back
