PWD association:
Mr Avtar Singh Dhillon has been elected president of the Punjab PWD (B and R) Ministerial Association for the third consecutive term. Mr Vijay Marjara has been elected general secretary of the association unanimously for the second consecutive term.

Youth Akali Dal:
The following have been nominated the office-bearers of the All-India Shiromani Youth Akali Dal: president — Mr Hartej Singh Mehta: senior vice presidents — Mr Balraj Singh and Mr Harcharan Singh; general secretaries — Mr Balwinder Singh; and Naib Singh; vice-president — Mr Balwant Singh; organising secretary — Mr Sahib Singh and Mr Jasvir Singh; joint secretary — Mr Anand Kumar Garg and Mr Basant Singh Jandewala; finance secretary — Mr Vajinder Singh; and press secretary — Mr Sukhpal Singh.

Funds for salaries: The Engineering College Technical Employees Association of the local GZS College of Engineering and Technology has urged the Punjab Technical Education Minister, Dr Upinderjit Kaur, to allocate separate funds for the salaries of the staff members. In a memorandum submitted to the minister, the association pointed out that for the past one year there had been uncertainty about the availability of funds for salaries. The association also demanded that Punjab Government holiday calendar should be implemented in the college and employees should be given the right to avial holidays under the Negotiable Instruments Act.

JALANDHAR
Inaugurated:
The Shivalik Kshetriya Gramin Bank’s Passi Kandi branch at Dasuya was inaugurated by the chairman of the bank, Mr S.C Vithal. Besides providing locker facilities, the branch would also offer Krishi Card to the farmers to enable them to buy agricultural inputs and even consumer goods through credit card, a facility hitherto limited to the privileged urbanites only.

PATIALA
Campaign launched:
The local Rotary Club, launched the annual tree plantation campaign on Tuesday at Saket Hospital, Dr P.C Gupta, Chief Medical Officer, was the chief guest. The project was organised and attended by Dr Ashok Gupta, president of the club, and other members.

Donated: Employees of Government Medical College, Dental College, Rajindra Hospital and T.B Hospital here have decided to donate their one-day salary for the benefit of soldiers, injured or killed in Operation Vijay. Dr S.S. Sidhu, Principal of the Government Medical College, said the decision had been taken at a meeting of various employees associations of the institutions.

Medical camp: A free medical check up camp was organised by the Lions Club (Patiala Central) here on Tuesday at Navjivni Home Care Centre for elders at Daru Kutia colony, Sular village. Ninety patients were examined and the aged patients were given medicines free of cost by the club.

Rotary club: Dr Ashok Gupta has been elected president of the local Rotary Club, stating this here on Tuesday Mr Manmeet, M.P. Singh, Chairman Public Relations, said the club had also donated Rs 25,000 to the Armed Forces Welfare Fund.

Kayastha Sabha: The local Kayastha Sabha has appointed Mr J.N Andlay as acting president after accepting the resignation of former president Dr R.P Srivastva. Mr Subhash Chand Mathur, secretary of the sabha, said the committee had held no official general body meeting to elect the president.

Elected: The following have been elected office-bearers of the Rotaract Club (Central) R.I. District 3090: president — Mr Lovleen Saini; vice-president — Mr Sanjay Jain; secretary — Mr Sukhwinder Jit Bham; joint secretary — Mr Karamjit Singh; and treasurer — Mr Balbir Singh Zorra.

Rape case:
A case under Sections 376 and 506 of the IPC has been registered against ‘Baba’ Karam Singh, head of Dera Baba Dhakana, Patti, for raping a married woman of Talwandi Sobha Singh village. The woman and her husband had approach the "Baba" regarding some domestic problem. He raped the woman in his room while her husband was waiting outside. The culprit is absconding.

Reinstated: The UT Administration on Wednesday reinstated Mr Umesh Kumar, Sarpanch of Hallo majra village. Mr Avtar Singh, Social Education and Panchayat Officer, was asked to hand over the charge of the panchayat to Mr Umesh Kumar.

FATEHABAD
Darbar held:
An open darbar was organised in the Deputy Commissioner's office here on Wednesday. The City Magistrate, Mr Dharampal, presided over the function. Officers of various government departments were present on the occasion. Complaints mainly regarding power, water and health were taken up by the City Magistrate and referred to officers of the departments concerned for redressal.

HISAR
Students protest:
Students of Haryana Agricultural University staged a dharna on Tuesday in front of the office of the Vice-Chancellor in support of their demands. They raised anti-Vice-Chancellor slogans and criticised university administration for adopting an indifferent attitude towards their demands. Striking students have threatened to intensify their agitation if the university failed to accept their demands. Mr Rajinder Sharma and Mr Bijender Sharma, ex-presidents of the students union of HAU, were among those who addressed the rally.

Bodies recovered: The police have recovered the body of a woman, Parmeshwari Devi (30) from a canal and that of her nephew, Surjit Kumar, from a field in Satrod village. A case under Sections 302 and 34 of the IPC has been registered against Dalbir Singh of Satrod village on the basis of a complaint lodged by Mithu Ram of Kulan village in Tohana tehsil. However, no arrest has been made so far.

Prohibited: The Deputy Commissioner, Mr Apoorv Kumar Singh, issued an order on Wednesday prohibiting the sale of overripe fruits and vegetables and cut fruits. The order has been issued to prevent the spread of cholera, gastroenteritis, diarrhoea and dysentery in the district. The sale of ice candies, ice cream and locally manufactured soft drinks has also been banned. The order authorises the Health Department staff to destroy stocks, if necessary.

Banned: The district administration has banned the release of arms licences with immediate effect. The Deputy Commissioner said here on Wednesday that the step had been taken in view of the declaration of the Lok Sabha elections. The ban will continue till the end of elections.

SIRSA
Protest:
Several members of the all-Haryana PWD Mechanical Employees Union staged a dharna outside the Deputy Commissioner's residence. Addressing the rally the state secretary of the union, Mr Raj Kumar, warned that their struggle would be intensified if the demands of the employees of the Public Health, Irrigation and Public Works Departments were not fulfilled. Several other local unit leaders also addressed the rally.

Open darbar: In the weekly open darbar organised at the local Patwar Bhawan, presided over by ADC Neerja Shekhar, nearly 126 complaints were redressed on the spot. The ADC demanded a report on these cases by July 19 and ordered the officials concerned to settle the pending cases.

Office-bearers: The following were elected office-bearers of the district Sofa Workers Union here on Monday: president — Mr Sohan Lal; chairman — Mr Narian Singh; general secretary — Mr Prem Kataria; agenda secretary — Mr Madan Lal; and treasurer — Mr Mukesh Rathor.

Rotaract Club:
The following persons have been elected office-bearers of the Rotaract Club, Gohna town: president — Mr Amit Garg; vice-president — Mr Sachin Jain; general secretary — Mr Ajay Jindal; and treasurer — Mr Suresh Jain.

Nominated: Mr Bhupinder Singh Hooda, HPCC President, has nominated Mr Rajbir Singh Dahiya as Chairman of the Media Committee of the district unit of the party. Mr Dharamvir Sharma of Garhi Brahminan village, Mr Jai Narain Gupta of Gohana and Mr Ghanshyam Dass Kalia have been nominated members of this committee.

Installation: The District Governor of the Rotary International Mr Ranjan Dhindgra installed Mr Sanjay Sharma as president of the Rotary Club (Midtown), at a function here on Tuesday. Many prominent citizens and members of the club were present on the occasion.

Resentment: A street near Shiv Mandir Chhoti Masjid in Mohalla Kalan has been dug up since July1, by a contractor of the Public Health Department for laying the drinking water pipeline and this has posed a serious threat to the residents especially at night as most of the streetlights in the area are not working. Residents are resenting the slow pace at which the work is being taken up.top

BILASPUR
Dharna:
Members of the district unit of the Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarathi Parishad staged a dharna and demonstrated in town bazaars here on Tuesday to protest against the increase in college tuition fee and charging of late fee by college authorities here. While addressing the rally, Mr Mukesh Thakur warned the government and university authorities that the parishad would launch a state-wide agitation if its charter of demands was not accepted immediately.

KANGRA
Liquor seized:
The Kangra police has seized 48 bottles of country made liquor and impounded a scooter used to transport the liquor, at Kachari village, near here on Wednesday. The Subdivisional Police Officer, Mr P.C. Thakur, said the police seized the liquor at Kachari after following the suspect. He said Des Raj, alias Hanuman, and Gogi both residents of Kachari village were absconding. The police has registered a case.
