Sampras advances as Philippoussis retires

LONDON, July 2 (AP) — Pete Sampras advanced to the Wimbledon semifinals today when Mark Philippoussis retired with a knee injury while holding a one-set lead over the five-time champion.

Andre Agassi, meanwhile, needed no favours as he overpowered Brazil’s Gustavo Kuerten 6-3, 6-4, 6-4, in just one hour, 35 minutes to cruise into the semis and edge closer to a rare French Open-Wimbledon double.

With one more victory apiece, Sampras and Agassi would meet in an all-American final on the fourth of July.

Sampras, chasing his sixth title in seven years, will next face Britain’s Tim Henman, who ousted an injured Cedric Pioline 6-4, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 to reach the semifinals for the second straight year.

Agassi will face US Open champion Patrick Rafter, who also benefited from an injury to his opponent, beating a limping Todd Martin 6-3, 6-7 (7-5), 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (7-3).

In women’s play, 18-year-old American Alexandra Stevenson became the first qualifier in Wimbledon history to reach the semifinals. She did it by beating another qualifier, 16-year-old Jelena Dokic, 6-3, 1-6, 6-3.

Stevenson, who graduated from high school in May and is playing her first tournament as a pro, skipped and hopped to net after Dokic hit a forehand long on match point.

In the other women’s quarter, 17-year-old Mirjana Lucic of Croatia overcame Nathalie Tauziat, 4-6, 6-4, 7-5. Tauziat served for the match at 5-4 in the third set, but Lucic won the last three games to take the match.

In tomorrow’s semis, Stevenson will play Lindsay Davenport, while seven-time champion Steffi Graf will face Lucic.

Philippoussis won the first set 6-4, and Sampras was up 2-1 on serve in the second when the Australian decided he could not continue.

In the last game, after Sampras had saved a break point, Philippoussis clutched his left knee after hitting a forehand service return at deuce.

After Sampras won the next point to hold serve, Philippoussis called for the trainer during the changeover.

After the three-minute injury timeout expired, Philippoussis shook his head to show the umpire he couldn’t continue. He then went over to shake hands with Sampras, who had been waiting in the shade at the back of the court while Philippoussis was being treated.

There were scattered boos from the centre court fans when the umpire announced Philippoussis’ retirement.

Philippoussis’ injury came at a fortunate time for Sampras, who was in serious trouble against the big-serving Aussie.

“I feel like I’m pretty fortunate to be alive in this tournament,” Sampras said. “It was a strange, strange day today. One minute you’re kind of holding on, the next minute he can’t go on any more.”

Sampras double faulted three times in the opening game to lose serve. Philippoussis saved four break points in the sixth game and served out the set in the 10th at love, finishing with a 136 mph ace.

Sampras had to save a break point in the third game of the second set before Philippoussis quit.

Philippoussis said he was unsure of the extent of his injury. He said he would go to a hospital for an MRI exam on the knee.

Martin, meanwhile, was leading 5-3 in the fourth set when he tumbled and appeared to injure his right knee. From then on, he limped noticeably and grimaced in pain.

But Martin earned three set points at 5-4 against Rafter’s serve but couldn’t convert. Martin then went up 3-1 in the tiebreak, but Rafter won six straight to clinch the match.

Pioline, meanwhile, injured his right knee as his legs buckled underneath him while hitting a backhand volley in the sixth game of the second set.

The Frenchman received treatment from Spreen during changeover throughout the final two sets. With his movement severely restricted, he tried to end points quickly. Despite barely being able to run, he managed to win the third set against a clearly frustrated Henman.

Paes-Bhupathi in semis

LONDON, July 2 (PTI) — Crack doubles pair Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi scored a hard-fought win to storm into the semifinals of the men’s doubles at Wimbledon here today.

The Top-seeded Indian duo rallied from two sets down to beat ninth seeded Canadian/American combination of Sebastien Lareu and Alex O’Brien 3-6, 4-6, 7-6, (7/5), 6-4, 6-4 in two hours 48 minutes.

Paes/Bhupathi, winners of the French Open doubles title, will meet winner of other quarterfinal match between the fourth-seeded pair of Wayne Black (Zimbabwe)/Sandone Stolle (Australia) and the fifth-seeded French duo Olivier Delaitre/Fabrice Santoro for a place in the final.

England 126 all out; trail by 100 runs

BIRMINGHAM, July 2 (AP) — Chris Cairns and Dion Nash snared three wickets apiece today as England’s new-look lineup crashed to 126 all out against the underrated New Zealanders in the first cricket Test at Edgbaston.

At tea on the second day New Zealand, bowled out for 226 on the opening day yesterday, has a 100-run lead.

Struggling at 56 for seven at lunch, England limped to 115 due to a 60-run eighth-wicket stand between New Zealand-born Andy Caddick and Alex Tudor.

But when Nash had Caddick caught behind by Adam Parore for 33 and picked up Alan Mullally next ball in same fashion, England’s defiant tailend fightback was as good as over.

No. 11 Phil Tufnell survived the hat-trick delivery, but managed only six runs before he was caught at first slip by Stephen Fleming off Cairns in the over before tea.

Tudor finished not out 32 but it was Caddick, recalled for his first Test 15 months, who proved to be a stumbling block for the Kiwis.

After being dropped by Fleming off Geoff Allott’s bowling with the total at 70, Caddick defied the swing bowling to keep England in the match. He also took three wickets yesterday.

In the first session, the New Zealand four-pronged seam attack blitzed the English top-order.

Ranatunga shown the door

COLOMBO, July 2 (AFP) — Sri Lanka has axed skipper Arjuna Ranatunga and his deputy Aravinda de Silva after the country’s humiliating exit from the World Cup, a state-run newspaper said today.

Either master-blaster Sanath Jayasuriya or Roshan Mahanama would lead Sri Lanka in next month’s triangular series with Australia and India, while Mahela Jayawardena is tipped as deputy, the Daily News said. The appointments were expected to be officially announced on Monday.

“The need for a change at the top became apparent following Sri Lanka’s dismal run in the last five one-day tournaments beginning with the mini-World Cup in Dhaka in October last year and culminating with their unsuccessful attempt to defend the World Cup,” the paper said.

Ranatunga, who is due to return home this weekend, will be asked to quit his captaincy so he could leave honourably.

The daily paper, which until the World Cup debacle had fully backed Ranatunga, said the 35-year-old captain would be admired by fans if he quit on his own rather than leaving the decision to the selectors.

“But then, Ranatunga is Ranatunga. He likes to do things his way and to a certain point he succeeded. Now the cookie has crumbled,” the report said, adding that both Ranatunga and De Silva may still be retained in the team.

Ranatunga has been Sri Lanka’s most successful captain leading the country in 193 one-day matches in an 11-year career that saw the country become world champions in 1996.

Under his captaincy, Sri Lanka won 89 matches, lost 95 matches, eight ended with no result and one tie.

Shortly after the recent World Cup, The Daily News demanded the expulsion of Ranatunga from the team.

“Ranatunga should not only forsake the captaincy, but quit (the team) altogether,” the paper said in a commentary by its senior writer Saadi Thawfeeq. “To have him in the team would only make life overbearing for the ensuing captain.”

The paper suggested that among other players who should be shown the door were De Silva, Roshan Mahanama, Hashan Tillekeratne, Romesh Kaluwitharana and Pramodya Wickremesinghe.

The paper said former coach Dav Whatmore, who groomed the side to win the 1996 World Cup, was ousted because he tried to build a young team after that victory.

Sri Lanka has begun talks with Whatmore to try to woo him back again.

The scathing attack by the state-run newspaper followed remarks by Sports Minister S.B.Dissanayake that he did not see Ranatunga as a future captain.

Mr Dissanayake, in an interview with the BBC, said Ranatunga “got many things wrong in the tournament ... He made several bad decisions ... In future I believe he will play in the team but not as a captain.”

Sri Lanka’s miserable World Cup ended with an unconvincing 45-run win over Kenya. Sri Lanka had earlier lost to England, South Africa and India, but won against Zimbabwe.

Mohun Bagan shocked

CALCUTTA, July 2 (UNI) — Custodian Bibhas Ghosh rose to the occasion and made a couple of fine saves in the tie-breaker to guide unfancied Tollygynge Agragami into the final of the McDowell Cup Football Tournament stunning favourite Mohun Bagan 4-2 in an eventful semifinal at the Salt Lake Stadium here today.

The tie-breaker rule had to be followed as both the teams failed to score any goal during the scheduled period when Nigerian striker, Chima Okerie of Mohun Bagan and Tollygunge defender Awoyemi Isiaka, also from Nigeria, were shown red cards by referee Kalidas Mukherjee for getting involved in a scuffle towards the end of the first half. The extra time also remained barren.

Tollygunge in the final on July 5 will meet the winners of the other semifinal between East Bengal and Mohammedan Sporting to be held tomorrow.

Wimbledon notebook

Rain ruins Mills’ schedule

LONDON, July 2 (AFP) — Wimbledon referee Alan Mills has tried to explain the shambolic scenes yesterday when players and spectators were rushed from one court to another in a bid to beat the drizzle.

“We have to be fair and even handed to all competitors,” he said. “The weather has made things difficult, for example it is possible that Lindsay Davenport has another nine matches to play in three events.

“The men still have one day per round. It is possible that we are looking at a Friday, Saturday, Sunday scenario for the women. “I would discuss it with all of the players to see how they feel. I don’t think it’s fair at this stage of a Grand Slam to put pressure on them.”

Try telling that to Alexandra Stevenson, who was bustled off court No 1 without hitting a ball by over eager court covers last night after having trekked over from court No 2 where her match started.

Will Davenport be No 1?

Tennis’s convoluted rankings system means Lindsay Davenport is on the verge of returning to the world No 1 spot in place of Martina Hingis.

According to the WTA tour, if Davenport had reached the final, she wouldn’t necessarily have amassed enough points to leapfrog Hingis, who lost in the first round here.

For reasons best known to the computer Davenport had to beat defending champion Jana Novotna — which she did yesterday — on the way to the final to be sure of taking over at the top.

There is a simpler scenario. If Davenport, who was No. 1 for 17 weeks until February 7 this year, wins her first ever Wimbledon title, she definitely becomes No. 1. We think.

Record for Sampras?

Pete Sampras could become only the fifth man ever to win the Wimbledon title without dropping a set.

Only Don Budge (1938), Tony Trabert (1955), Chuck McKinley (1963) and Bjorn Borg (1976) have achieved that feat before.

The five-time winner is the only player left in the men’s draw not to have dropped a set on his way to the quarterfinals.

Unfinished replay

Steffi Graf was amazed to see her quarterfinal opponent Venus Williams studying a replay of their match in the locker-room during the three rain intervals.

“I didn’t (watch) but she did and I was wondering about it,” said Graf, who won in three sets.

“Why would you want to look at the replay of the match when it is not finished? She was trying to study, I don’t know. I felt very awkward that the match was still on and I tried not to watch it.”

Brilliant victory by Anand

FRANKFURT, July 2 (DPA) — Russian grandmaster Gary KAasparov has moved into the sole lead at the Frankfurt speed chess tournament following the latest round of matches yesterday.

The 36-year-old Kasparov and his bitter rival and fellow Russian Anatoly Karpov played to a draw, this time in 47 moves for the third consecutive time.

But the highlight of the evening was the brilliant victory by India’s Viswanathan Anand, with the white pieces, over Russia’s Vladimir Kramnik.

During a well-known variation of the Russian defence, Anand surprised the experts by exchanging a rook for a bishop, completely unnerving his opponent.

Kramnik made a few forced moves and then gave up on his 27th move.

Kasparov then took advantage of the moment to defeat the 23-year-old Kramnik in the next match, while Anand and Karpov drew.

In the final session of the evening, Kasparov and Anand agreed to a quick draw, which left the 36-year-old Russian ahead of the field by one point.

Meanwhile, Kramnik recovered to gain win over the 48-year-old Karpov.

Each player is allowed 25 minutes per match for all his moves in what is regarded as the strongest speed chess tournament ever played.

With one day to go, Kasparov leads the elite speed chess event with 5.5 points, followed by Kramnik with 4.5, and Karpov and Anand with 4.0 each.

The tournament, which marks the first time that Kasparov and Karpov have met in competition since 1996 and in which the four grandmasters play each other four times — twice with white and twice with black — ends today.

The parallel masters speed chess tournament is led by the computer programme “fritz 6” with 8.0 points, followed by Vesselin Topalov (Bulgaria) with 7.0, Peter Leko (Hungary/6.5), Peter Svidler (Russia/5.5), Judit Polgar (Hungary/5.0), Alexander Morozevich (Russia/4.5), Christopher Lutz (Germany/4.5) and Michael Adams (England/3.0).

Another attraction, at the end of this chess classics festival in Frankfurt, will be four-game challenge between “fritz” and Anand. The computer will be seeking revenge for last year’s narrow loss to the Indian grandmaster.

W’ling mania: brother kills brother

DALLAS, July 2 (Reuters) — A seven-year-old Dallas boy copying a move he saw in televised professional wrestling killed his three-year-old brother, the police said.

Dallas police said yesterday that the older boy slammed his little brother to the floor with a running straight-armed punch to the neck in late May.

“He said he had seen it on professional wrestling on cable television,” police spokesman officer Gabriel Grimes said, referring to the 7-year-old.

The manoeuvre is called a “clothesline” or “lariat” in the violent and flashy world of a televised wrestling. The incident, which the police said occurred on May 23 or 24, came to light when it was reported by the Dallas morning news.

The police said they considered the death accidental and would not charge the boy.

The three-year-old died on May 27 from brain swelling caused by his head striking his family’s carpeted concrete floor.

The police, alerted by hospital staff to the injury, said they at first suspected an adult had harmed the child.

But when they talked to the older brother he readily admitted knocking the younger boy down.

When asked to demonstrate what he had done, the older boy ran from about 10 feet away at a life-size doll held by a detective. As he neared the doll, he thrust out one arm at shoulder height and slammed the doll in the throat, knocking it backwards.

The seven-year-old was forthcoming when the police interviewed him, crying and saying he did not mean to hurt his brother.

“We would like to tell parents, first, know what your children are watching on TV and second, instruct your children in what is safe and what is not,” Mr Grimes said.

Top athletes to vie for honours

NAGERCOIL, July 2 (PTI) — Top Indian athletes will vie with tough foreign opposition in the first domestic athletic circuit meet to be held at the Aringar Anna stadium here tomorrow which should provide ideal exposure for many talented juniors in the build up for coming international meets.

The one-day meet will see the top Indians vie with rivals from Ukraine, Kenya, Iran, Malaysia, Maldives, Mauritius and Sri Lanka.

The Amateur Athletic Federation of India this year has decided to do away with inviting big names from abroad and instead have opened the four domestic meets to lesser known foreign athletes to ensure ideal competition.

A total of 160, including 60 from abroad, are expected to participate in both the men’s and women’s sections. Competition will be held in 100 m, 400 m, 1500 m, 3000 m, long jump, shot put, hammer throw, discus and javelin throw.

Bangladesh and Nepal are expected for the third and fourth legs scheduled at Bangalore on July 12 and Chennai on July 15 respectively. The second leg will be held at Thiruvananthapuram on July 6.

Sri Lanka have entered a strong contingent of women athletes, but they are expected to face stiff challenge from the hosts.

In the throwing events, Indian stars Shakti Singh (shot put), Ramandeep Singh (javelin), Anil Kumar and Kamalpreet Singh (both discus), are expected to assert their superiority.

Talented women jumpers like Lekha Roy (nee Thomas), Anju Markose and G.C. Pramila are expected to come up with good performances.

Rachita Mistry of Railways, who won the Bangkok Asian Games 100 m bronze (11.41 s), is favourite for the women’s shorter dash with Pradeepa Herath of Sri Lanka, V. Jayalakshmi and Vinita Tripathi set to provide the challenge.

In the men’s 100m, Sri Lankan national record holder Chintaka De Soyza is the favourite. Soyza’s best timing is 10.31s set in a Sri Lankan national meet in 1991. Soyza will be pushed by Anil Kumar and Amit Khanna.

Sethi, Gilchrist in q-finals

MUMBAI, July 2 (PTI) — World number two Geet Sethi of India and world no. three Peter Gilchrist of England booked their quarter-final berths in the billiards competition of the 5th Alpic Om Agrawal billiards and Snooker Tournament here today.

Sethi resisted a stiff challenge from compatriot Nalin Patel, winning 614-562, while Gilchrist stopped Ashok Shandilya 725-605.

Overcoming lethargy in the first session, Sethi, who was trailing by about 120 points at one stage, compiled a timely break of 198 which saw him surge to a valuable lead of 70 points over patel in group A.

With about a minute and 41 seconds remaining Patel had his chance of upsetting the no 1 seed, but he missed a simple cannon at the top of the table, while compiling a break of 38.

Despite the loss, Patel qualified for the last eight where he meets Mumbai-based Devendra Joshi.

Like Patel, Asian Games gold medallist Shandilya too came very close to surprising Gilchrist before losing the group “B” tie 605-725.

NEW DELHI, July 2 (PTI) — Diminutive Ambica N S Iyengar of Karnataka scored a fine double while Maharashtra swimmers took the overall honours claiming five golds on the opening day of the 16th National Sub-Junior Swimming Championship here today.

Ambica, an eighth standard student from Bangalore’s Sophia High School, surged to victory in the girls 200 metres freestyle and 100 m breast stroke at the Talkatora Pool.

Rehan Poncha missed the meet mark by 0.03 seconds as he claimed the third gold medal for Karnataka in the boys 200 m freestyle.

Poncha, like Ambica a trainee at the K C Reddy Swim Centre of Bangalore, kept excellent pace with favourite Parikshit Shetty of Maharashtra before stroking his way ahead to win by a metre ahead of Shetty.

Brazil eves subdue Nigeria

LANDOVER (Maryland), July 2 (AFP) — A second-half rally lifted the USA into the women’s World Cup semifinals against a Brazilian side that needed a “golden goal” to subdue stubborn Nigeria.

Second-half headers by Brandi Chastain and Joy Fawcett rallied the hosts to a 3-2 triumph over Germany here yesterday while cup goal leader Sissi’s free kick goal in the 104th minute brought Brazil a 4-3 victory.

A foul by Nigeria’s Adanna Nwaneri set up the winner by Sissi, whose seventh goal of the tournament followed two earlier assists.

The US team meets Brazil on Sunday in Palo Alto, California, for a spot in the July 10 final at Pasadena, California, against reigning champion Norway or China, who meet Sunday in Foxboro, Massachusetts.

US President Bill Clinton, his wife Hillary and daughter Chelsea were among 54,642 at the Cooke Stadium who saw the US team overcome an early own goal and Germany’s go-ahead goal in first-half injury time.

Chastain’s own goal in the fifth minute put Germany ahead. Tiffany Milbrett equalised in the 16th but Bettina Wiegmann’s left-footer from outside the penalty area just past the 45th minute put Germany ahead 2-1.

Chastain redeemed her blunder with an equaliser four minutes into the second half and Fawcett nodded in the winner in the 66th off a corner kick by Shannon MacMillan.

The hosts had to rally from the start after Chastain sent a passack to goalkeeper Briana Scurry, who had already gone down to make the grab on the ball’s original path.

Four US players could only chase in vain as the ball rolled into the unguarded goal, the Americans showing the first sign that the pressure of their favourites role was having an affect.

US women are 8-1 with one drawn against Brazil, which hung on after grabbing a 3-0 half-time lead on goals by Cidinha in the fourth and 22nd minutes and another by Nene in the 35th.

Nigeria rallied on Prisca Emeafu’s goal in the 63rd minute, a rebound tally by Nikiru Okosieme nine minutes later and Nkechi Egbe’s equaliser in the 85th minute.

But the African champions’ joy was short lived. Patience Avre received her second yellow card and was ejected in the 87th minute, leaving the African champions down a player the rest of the way.

Mabo’s Brazilian counterpart agreed the ejection was decisive, saying, “when she went out of the game, a big piece of Nigeria went out of the game. She was the heart of their team. It was definitely a blow to Nigeria she had to come out.”

Nigeria’s rally knocked Russia out of the 2000 Olympics, leaving the Sydney lineup from this qualifying event as the US team, China, Norway, Brazil, Sweden, Germany, Nigeria and the Olympic host Australians.

Surrey sparkle sans stars

LONDON, July 2 (AFP) — The stars may be missing but Surrey still sparkled in their English County Cricket Championship clash with strugglers Durham yesterday.

Mark Butcher, Alec Stewart and Alex Tudor were all on Test duty yet Surrey turned the screw on Durham, who needed four more runs to avoid the follow-on at The Oval in reply to the leaders’ first-innings total of 335.

Reigning champions Leicestershire moved into a commanding lead of 118 against Yorkshire at the Grace Road with paceman James Ormond wreaking havoc.

The visitors capitulated to just 52 all out, and then opener Darren Maddy almost single-handedly struck an unbeaten 85 as part of the Foxes total of 170 for six.

Kent are in sight of victory at Maidstone with Warwickshire 104 for seven — still needing 144 for an improbable win.

Spinner Min Patel did the damage with four for 17 from nine overs after Kent had been dismissed for 199 just before tea — Ed Smith top-scoring with 52 and Dougie Brown taking four for 37.

Sussex crashed from 97 for two to 165 all out at Taunton in reply to Somerset’s mammoth 503 for eight declared. They then closed on 16 for no wicket after following on.

At Lord’s, Robin Weston helped Derbyshire ease past Middlesex’s first innings total. The midlanders reached 311 for six with Weston going strong on 120 not out.

Tom Moody’s side capitulated for just 102 in their first innings with their skipper left stranded on 63 not out but after Northants were skittled for 197, the runs began to flow.
